'the list' there seemed to a few disparaging remarks concerning Utd's place on it . Basically many felt you should be higher than that given .

From the experiences I have had re a lot of Man Utd fans and their poor / lame excuses for finishing the season empty handed ( that's NOT a dig it's an observation - keep yer knickers on )the best yet being the pre-season Far Eastern tour one .

I amonsgt others have noted a certain lack of grace and geniune congratulations towards the more successful side this season .

But, you see, that's the problem. I actually replied -page 1- on the Gremio issue and some facts about the Brazilian league (which I personally think were interesting but I dare not label them interesting or I'll get someone arguing how they aren't). Next time I come to see how the topic developed I get stuffed with all that crap...

The bottomline with respect to Gremio is they have a far from unbeatable side, haven't won anything for a while but are odds on to win the S.A. CL (Libertadores Cup). But this is mainly as a result of the South American clubs in general being quite weak at present (broke, unable to invest in the future and selling any rough diamonds immediately to pay off debts, particularly in Argentina!!!).

I guess it is fair to say at any one time a South American side would be one of the Top 10 but you would have to do that based on semesters as teams come up and get disbanded very quickly. Have you ever heard of Sao Caetano? They were absolutely stunning to watch last year, i.e. until they had to replace 8 first team players within 5 weeks!

Gremio has been brilliant at times scoring goals left right and centre against big traditional teams (4-1 I think against River, who have lost Aimar, Saviola, Ortega, Placente, Yepes, among others in the space of one year, yet the money they got for them you have to divide by 4 now! :eek!: ). But then last week they lost to a 3rd Division team (3rd division I assume, there isn't such a thing, I just base myself on the fact I had absolutely never heard of them) who got them out of the final in one of the several cups played here.

Point is, at any one point there will be a South American team capable of beating any of the others on that Top Ten, but not for long....

I think we have to be realistic about Manchester United`s current position. Sure, some of those are a bit dodgy - Liverpool,yeah right, Bayern Leverkausen, etc, - but I think about this.

Consider Manchester United and the Champions` League. Nottingham Forest of all teams have a superior record to us. 2 European Cups separated by 30 odd years hardly puts Manchester United up there with the likes of Real Madrid. Or even Bayern Munich who have a better record of European Cups.

When Manchester United went out of the European Cup in the 2000-2001 season Keano made the observation that the club was just average in Europe. Too right. To etch your name in history with this cup you have to win it and keep winning it. Not every year. But with something approaching regularity.

Sure, the dominance of English football in the 90s was phenomenal as was the Treble. But life moves on and if you live in the past you are really not living at all. As Keano has been known to say, `Some people live off what they have done in the past. That`s not my way.` The situation in a nutshell.

ps. I agree that we're a long way behind Real Madrid. We're top of the pile in England but Real are the benchmark for Europe.
