Manchester United have been linked with Rangers keeper Allan McGregor, but Gers striker James Beattie is urging the club to hold onto the "fantastic" player.

McGregor has been in fine form for the Scottish champions all season, including clean-sheets against United and Bursaspor in the Champions League.

And he saw his stock rise further in the last week with man-of-the-match performances against both Czech Republic and Spain for Scotland in their Euro 2012 qualifiers.

Sir Alex Ferguson is now reportedly weighing up a move for McGregor, who is contracted to Rangers until 2013, as he seeks a replacement for veteran Edwin van der Sar.

"Allan is a fantastic goalkeeper and he's a great lad as well," said Beattie, who has been impressed by the number one since his summer move from Stoke.

"I'm not surprised he is getting interest from top clubs like Manchester United.

"It's very important for us to keep hold of our best players. That's up to the board and Allan himself.

"If he keeps performing as he is, superbly all the time, he is going to create interest.

"It's up to the club to keep him and for him to keep his head right.

"He's right up there. When I first came in, I didn't really know him but I get on really well with him.

"His performances in training and in games are fantastic. He is gaining interest and it's well-deserved."
He´s good enough to replace Kuszczak.

Yeah Shagger's had a good season or two and was excellent against Spain on Tuesday night. Got a bit of an ego about him which always helps with keepers. Consistent shot-stopper, sharp reactions but an occassional flapper at crosses.

He's probably as good as any other British keeper, better than anything Arsenal have got, and would be available for £5m or so. That said, he won't be in the top bracket United might be looking for.

I've always been impressed with him way better than Schwarzer IMO, could do a lot worse.

I was on holiday in Spain when we played Rangers and there was a fan staying in our complex who was going on about how good this guy is and how he expected us to be looking at him. I figure'd he's probably be rubbish because this guy talked more arse than pampers, but hey here we are being linked with him.

How do you rate him compared to Gordon?

Gordon I feel has enormous potential, more than McGregor who is a comparatively late-developer, but his career in the Premiership has been punctuated by injuries. Continuity is important for a goalkeeper and he may not realise that potential unless he can string a solid two or three seasons together.

They're quite similar in many ways because for all of Gordon's height and reach, his aerial game still requires improvement. Like McGregor he too is a good shot-stopper with the ability to pull off match-winning saves on a regular basis.

Wish Fergie would look at Ligue 1 to find a replacement for van der Sar. And I'm not talking about the usual suspects Lloris and Mandanda, there's plenty of other talents there.

rubbish
if someone was at that game , it was probably to have a look at both teams as we have to play them in the coming weeks

I hope so, if he is to replace PIG then fine but not as our number one FFS.

IMO - what a club like United really need is a solid goalkeeper who is excellent at crosses - because realistically, how many times during a season do a goalkeeper at United need to pull off supersaves.

We get so few shots at us during a game that if we have a solid goalkeeper who stops the crosses and makes the defenders feel safe - that will more than compensate for those 5-6 goals a season which a keeper with super reflexes could have saved

So if I were in charge - I would not look at goalkeeper who is below 6'3

Good shot stopper, nothing else. He's a fecking arse hole too, you think John Terry is bad?

He'd never move away to be a number 2. He's not good enough to replace VDS.

Would actually be a very good backup keeper if PIG was looking away, but he'd be far too volatile a character to sign as first choice keeper here. Brilliant shot stopper, but theres far too much idiocy and off the pitch distractions with him.

Why would a number 1 GK for a team winning titles and having a go in the CL every season want to be a number 2?

He'd also lose his spot as Scotland number 1.

Ambition. People do aspire to win things other than Scottish premierships (see Arteta, Van Bronckhorst, Gattuso etc). With his off the pitch problems he might want to get a break from the goldfish bowl of Glasgow. He'd also earn far more from a move to United

Good backup for another goalkeeper, but if we already have PIG, why would be spend money on another backup keeper without replacing VDS first? I do not want him as VDS replacement.

Doubt we'd spend £5m on a goalkeeper for number 2. You can get a decent one for £2m quite easily

A lot of it has to do with the Glasgow goldfish bowl environment.

Absolutely. I've made reference in my last post to the same thing. Its certainly not the easiest place to stay out of the news. My cousins a team mate of his, says he's a decent guy but very easily led astray. I'm not sure whether it would be any easier for him in Manchester but. He's nearly 29 so can't see him changing his ways.

Why would McGregor like to be nr.2 at a club when he has just become nr.1 for his country?

So Fergie was at the Old Firm match yesterday. I didnt read too much into it at the time, and had assumed it was just because of his Rangers past and his close friendship with Walter Smith. But...does anyone think theres a remote chance he may have been there to watch Alan McGregor, who as it turns out had a very good game including one absolute wondersave. I'd like to think we're after a more established and higher profile name than him but theres no doubt he's a very good goalkeeper and would be available and affordable.

No chance. I would rather stick with Lindegaard and PIG. If we are getting a new keeper in the summer, we might as spend and get a prolific #1 rather than this lad. He might be good but not good enough to be United's number 1.

I'd agree that it'd be no upgrade on what we have, but i dont think i would be truly shocked if we did go down that road. I think people underrate just how good McGregor is. He is definately 100% good enough to play in the Premiership (keeping Gordon out of the Scotland team), but as we know, being no.1 at United is a different story.

According to reports he was watching Izaguirre.

Personally I think it's more likely he was there because of his Rangers past and his close friendship with Walter Smith.
