United is still a top club

While I would love to agree that Manchester United still are a top club, by what metrics do we really qualify.
The name Manchester United is a top brand.
Biggest home attendance....
Those are the only ones that United really qualify on.
And even OT is in need of modernisation.
On pretty much all of the others, we have fallen well behind.
You don't remain a top club for long by living on past glories.

Can you be considered a top club if you haven’t won a trophy in over 5 years?

2nd place is not indicative of greatness or progress. Likewise you cannot claim regression and use this as a metric. There is no regression from finishing as a first place loser, athletes compete to win not to receive a participation medal.

But should we like to use the 2nd place trophy as any kind of barometer, let’s compare United 20-21 to Chelsea 21-22. A season where many consider Chelsea’s season a disappointment and a failure.

In what is considered you most successful season for a long time, you would have finished 4th place in the season just gone.

Would you consider yourself a top team?

You failed to beat Villarreal in the Europa league final. A team with far less resources. A much much smaller team.

What you have become is Liverpool of 10-15 years ago. A massive team with mediocre results. Your side has been drowning for a long time, you manage to doggy paddle your way up to the top screaming history as you frantically gasp for air only to sink again.

For sure it’s not permanent and you will rise again, with the right guidance and management but you are not a top club. Likewise I don’t consider my own club a top club at least for now. That title belongs to those who consistently compete, consistently produce results. Both our teams reside in the 2nd tier

Simply put, you are a 4* team with 5* ambitions and aspirations.

Being top club and top team are two different things.

We are top club due to what we have achieved from the first time it was built up to now and the fact we are more valuable than your club despite of not winning major trophies for years reflects to how high our status as club which also means we are still far above you as club's status.

Of course it's different argument if we are talking about a team. Team means which stage or generation of Manchester United we are talking about.

Football club is not built based on 5 years. Club is club which the entity or the firm aka Manchester United or Chelsea, it counts as the whole thing how the firm was built from the beginning to now. Manchester United has established the status of top club with their 20 league titles and 3 UCL trophies, which lead them into global club and earn as one of the most valuable club in the world right now.

Please stop making things up. After 20-21, more than half the fans wanted Ole fired. Plus champions of europe Chelsea got the exact same result against villareal. The difference between United and Chelsea is that if your new owner is not as generous as Roman, 2nd tier is your ceiling, not for United despite the Glazers.
 
This sounds like a thread dripping with condescension motives.

The only thing missing is a pat on the head and a lolly.
 
It won't be wrong to say but we have lost the charm. The current regime lf ETH is very important for the club's future, another failure and we defenitely won't be that glamorous either but just a club who is big by it's history. But the good thing we are too much of a big club to just become a midtable club. Another 5 years of say mediocre results and something will defenitely have to give in.
 
We are still one of the biggest clubs in the world and by far the biggest club in England. However, that can easily change and the downward spiral is growing by the season.
It's all about opinion but for me the following criteria’s is what makes a club big;

Total Silverware – We still hold the record for the most Championships. Sadly, I fear Liverpool will soon catch and then overtake us on this record.
Match-Going Support – Unbeatable. Every home is usually sold out and our away support is second to none
European Pedigree – The fact that most European fans still call us “Manchester” and refer to the other club in the city as “Man City” tells you everything you need to know about our European pedigree
Worldwide Support - I still believe we are the most supported club in the world.
Stadium and infrastructure – The biggest domestic ground in the UK. Sadly, it’s in dire need of some TLC or a complete rebuild. Our training facilities are shocking for a club our size. Our entire infrastructure needs major investment.

Its laughable when rival fans try to say the likes of city becoming a bigger club than us. If you can’t fill your ground, you can’t be considered a big club, regardless of how much money you spend or how much you win. City are a small club with rich owners. Every single trophy they’ve won since 2008 has been bought. Every single one.
 
I see Sky still think we are a a draw: they have four of our first five games on live (BT has the other two). That takes us up to (and including) September 11 - after that, they have probably worked out, we will be out of the running for the title!!

We're still the biggest club in the world. I don't think we'll ever be surpassed, but we obviously do need to start getting things right on the pitch to grow our fanbase even further and wider.
