Alex Ferguson has cionfirmed today that Lazio's Allesandro Nesta is his top target this summer.
www.manchesteronline.co.uk/football
This time's he's quoted and mentions Nesta's name. He says Nesta is at the World Cup but will hopefully get something done when World Cup is over.
Price quoted as £30 million and SAF says while he's not 'over confident' he is hoping to conclude a deal in a few weeks time.
Thuram is also mentioned as a back-up should the Nesta deal not happen...

It's unusual for UTD to be so open about transfer targets. Clearly, something has been provisionally agreed with Lazio for Nesta. Usually everything is under wraps until it's a done deal. Unless Fergie's putting some pressure on.

Lets be honest. Thuram showed alarming lack of pace today against the Senegalese. If you partnered him with Blanc against a strikeforce of
Diouf and Owen we would be totally slaughtered.I belive more pacy defenders like ayala, Rio and Nesta should now be our primary focus. :)

Get with the program muppet. Thuram played well today. Lebouf didn't - and Lizerazu and Desailly were average. As for Thuram being slow - he's their fastest defender so lets not go there.

Duuuh!

Thuram and Lizarazu were caught often by Diouf because they were too slow to track back. Why was Le Boef at right back when Diouf crossed to set up the goal. Was it not because Thuram was now where to be seen but miserably tracking back? Imagine he and Blanc together against Owen and Diouf

So Muppet YOU get with the program and don't over hype Thuram. About him having pace DON"T make me giggle

So the answer is: Thuram shouldn't be playing right back and trying to support a faltering attack, but at centerhalf, where he can concentrate on defending.

No problems, where do we sign? :p

You can't possibly be more than 14 tops.

I'm watching a replay of the match right now, and just as I suspected - your analysis of Thuram is somewhere in the next galaxy from being spot on.

Stop lying your're not watching the replay :p

where is Thuram when Diouf crosses the ball or is it LeBouef somehow in a right back position?

He is fast...but Silvestre could give him a run for his money

Its on ESPN2 now. Not sure if that applies to rural Uganda as well.

Silvestre is probably faster, but Thuram is quicker than the other 3 starters today.

Today's game made me think twice about Thuram actually. But not for the same reasons that our wise friend kemo has done. I wondered why Thuram is constantly played at RB. Is it really because the competition for the CB position at every club he goes to is so tough? Other than Canavaro who did Parma have at CB? Are all these other CBs so much better than Thuram? Perhaps they are. I'd suggest that chiefly down to the fact that Thuram is a great RB who has pace and crosses a good ball in to the box. In fact his situation reminds me of Silvestre's and it worries me a little to think that we may buy a player who has played the better part of his career in a position that he prefers not to play. Perhaps we shouldn't bother with him - he's a right back in my book and a damn good one at that.

He didn't have the best of games but he wasn't bad either. One really has to question why Lemerre didn't bring Mexes along as an option.

He should have played Thuram as a CB and Candela at RB...'twould have been better than playing Franck Cowmeat

Nesta would be great!.....although again, I don't know how long it would take him to adapt to the PL..it would be the first time for him playing in a foreign club...and Nesta is a homegrown Lazio player....I'm pretty sure he'll only leave if Lazio have to sell him for economic reasons.....it's going to be a long summer...I am not sure yet if I'll join on all the speculations.....I'll probably just ignore it untill the new season starts.....all the speculations almost killed me last year!

We need to get out of the business of spending 30m quid for players, when we could easily pick up 3 good players for that price.

...you're right....as I said before...and as a big admierer of Nesta....it would be great to have him.....but still the greatest thing to me are players who become big names at united rather than big names coming to united.

Thuram,Ferdinand and Carlos 10 million each if we wait for the sales. ;)

Why will nobody listen?
we could buy the whole Sengalese defence for $30millions and on todays showing that would be a brilliant move!

if we can get him, great, but don't hold your breath. If he is to spend so much on one defender that means one fromBrown / O'Shea / Blanc will be first-choice next season. Would rather have Ayala or Thuram to be honest.

I am listening to you Pat. Actually I have been listening to you since the very first time you mentioned Cissé (the other one). Problem is not much I can do.

If we want to judge players on one match, I really hope South Koera can somehow keep a clean sheet against Portugal in their group match. Then we can buy their whole "brilliant" defence line (bundled with their goalie) for less than 10 million!

Totally agree. I expect Thuram to replace Blanc when Blanc retired. But it seems the current French manager is just too conservative.
