First it was Kasey Keller. Then Brad Friedel. Now it appears that Tim Howard might become the latest U.S. National Team goalkeeper to play in the vaunted English Premier League.

ESPN.com has learned through a source that Manchester United, perhaps the world's most revered club, has made an offer to Major League Soccer in hopes of acquiring the 24-year-old MetroStar.

When reached for comment, MLS Deputy Commissioner Ivan Gazidis would only say the following: "There's discussions about our top players every day, as clubs around the world express interest on a regular basis."

The EPL champions originally got in contact with Howard and MetroStars G.M. Nick Sakiewicz in March. They requested to get a look at the MLS all-star in training over in England, but settled for a series of video clips since the MetroStars were already gathered for preseason training. At the time, Sakiewicz said that Howard would have his blessing to go if a contract was offered, while Howard was quoted as saying, "You dream about things like this," calling Manchester United "the biggest sports team in world history."

After watching tapes of Howard in action, Man. U. sent its goalkeeper coach, Paul Barron, to Houston to take in the U.S.-Mexico friendly on May 8. He was apparently sold on Howard after seeing him stifle the Mexicans with five saves in posting a shutout in the 0-0 draw. Manager Sir Alex Ferguson could be looking at Howard as an understudy to France's Fabien Barthez, the World Cup hero in 1998, or as a less expensive option as his first-team keeper should the 31-year-old Barthez be let go.

Bringing Howard in could be one of the "two or three signings" that Ferguson recently mentioned could be in store for Manchester United, rather than the wholesale changes that have been speculated since the club was defeated by Real Madrid in the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

Ferguson has been rumored to be going after Brazilian midfielder Ronaldinho, Real Madrid midfielder Claude Makelele and Blackburn's Damien Duff, amongst others, to round out his juggernaut that includes world stars such as David Beckham, Ryan Giggs and Barclayard Player of the Year Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Howard signed a four-year contract with MLS in January to make the league's maximum ($270,000). He would stand to get a considerable raise with Man. U. and Major League Soccer would also receive a transfer fee for a player of Howard's caliber. Should Man. U. want Howard available for preseason training, the squad will be touring the U.S. this summer with games in Seattle (July 22), Los Angeles (July 27), East Rutherford, N.J. (July 31) and Philadelphia (Aug. 3).

The North Brunswick, N.J., native joined the MetroStars in 1998 season as a Project 40 player. He played in 19 games his first three seasons before becoming the team's starter in 2001. Since that time, he has led MLS in saves the past two seasons and has blossomed into the top goalkeeper in the league.

Howard, who trained in the off-season with Feyenoord in Holland, has been just as exceptional in 2003, being one of the main reasons why Bob Bradley's club is off and running with a 4-1-1 record to top the Eastern Conference. In that time, he has posted three shutouts and has allowed a mere three goals for a league-leading 0.49 goals-against-average, including a current 229-minute shutout streak dating back to May 3. For the U.S. National Team, he has played in five games this year, going 2-1-1, after winning his only two starts for Bruce Arena's squad in 2002.

At 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, the former high school basketball star is known for his long reach and tremendous athleticism that allows him to make acrobatic saves on balls that normally would find the back of the net.

"You can hit a shot that you promise is going in and you think is going in the net already, and he'll go and make the most mind-boggling save," says Columbus Crew midfielder Kyle Martino. "He's a tough goalkeeper to beat day-in and day-out."

That's what some of the top players in the world already say about Friedel and Keller. Maybe next season that's what they'll be saying about Howard.

At Old Trafford.

Yea he is a big kid and very consistant. His stats put him at the top of the MLS. It would be much better for him to face the really good players that are in England and Europe. Would help him sharpen his game and take it to another level.

Soild Keeper. Size, athleticism and excellent anticipation. Will probably end up the best US keeper ever IMO.

Mate, if we can get a keeper who concedes 0.49 goals a game then we only need Ruud to score one a match and we'll break all records!

You mean you understood that ;)

So you really are a fat yank then Dans, get back in your NBA thread and leave the footie to us English types eh

And not too poncy a name for a yank either. We must get a big keeper and this guy certainly lives up to that at least.

Got to worth a look at eh

Sign him early enough and we can start teaching him proper English too ;) Wouldnt want him using phrases like 'shut out', 'zip' and 'de-fence' now would we

i never seen or heard bout this guy howard before..is he good?so do you guys suggest he's good to be the first choice keeper for us?

we already have two reserves GK..carrol and ricardo..

A lot of people do not know anything about this fello cause he plays in MLS (Include me!).But I always very surprise of the goolie standard of USA.Surely those who had chased the 2002 world cup know that.So I suggest that why don't we trade him in first and see weather he has the level of being our No.1 or not :p

Bullshit. He is the best in the Premiership without a doubt. He would easily displace Barthez is he came here.

Hell, Howard would displace Barthez. Get over your America is shite at football attitude. We did ok at the last World Cup you know :p

I'll give you that one. Unless, of course, Brad Friedel is a fan.

South Korea did well at the last world cup, and they're shite at football...

Gay Brad is not the best in the Premiership. Robinson, Niemi, Cudicini, Barthez, Dudek, Seaman, Kirkland, Sorensen - all as good or better than him.

Adin Brown is better. :p

Howard is fecking class though and it would be great to get him.

Save this thread for 2010 when Freddy Adu is scoring goals galore for Manchester United...and Tim Howard is approaching the legendary status of Peter Schmeichel... :D

Surely not enough international games for a work permit yet?

If he's as good as some have said he could be worth a gamble. However, there's a fairly large difference between being the next Freidel and the next Keller.

Manchester United trying to sign 'disabled' goalkeeper

Manchester United are trying to sign an American international goalkeeper voted Humanitarian of the Year after coping with the effects of Tourette's syndrome.

Tim Howard, 23, has risen to prominence in the United States despite suffering from an illness that will make him an extraordinary character if he arrives at Old Trafford in August for the start of next season.

People with Tourette's syndrome suffer from nervous tics and at times cannot control what they are saying. Howard, who plays for New York/New Jersey MetroStars in the Major Soccer League, says he has learnt to cope with the illness. The effects of Tourette's can be harrowing, with spasms and uncontrollable outbursts two of the most common signs.

Howard's teammates say they have not found his disability to be a problem. However, he is bound to be at the centre of much interest if United complete the deal for the £1.2m-rated player.

The New Jersey-born goalkeeper is regarded so highly for handling his "handicap" that he was voted Humanitarian of the Year by the charity New York Life. He rose through the college ranks to play for MetroStars, all the while dealing with his illness. Howard has yet to play for the US in a competitive international because of the form of Blackburn's Brad Friedel and Tottenham's Kasey Keller, but has played for the national side in friendly games. He could be one of two new keepers at Old Trafford, with Fabien Barthez out of favour and Roy Carroll wanted by Birmingham City.

It's indifferent. I've heard that his mother is hungarian. He can get hungarian nationality. There is a decision that the sportmen from the future memberstate of EU became the EU citizenship. That means he don't need work permit.

i can just see him talking to the press "you lot are feckin idiots"

Although a long-term injury to Wes Brown has intensified Ferguson's search for defensive reinforcements, the manager's next priority is a goalkeeper to replace the erratic Fabien Barthez.

Brad Friedel, the 32-year-old United States international, is understood to have emerged as the Ferguson's favoured candidate, although Blackburn's £10m valuation may prompt him to exploit Leeds United's financial plight with a bid for Paul Robinson.

Why not offer Carroll, Chadwick (or another reserve player), and 5m to Blackburn for Friedel? It's apparent that Barthez will probably be sold to a French club for 4-6m.

Perhaps United will sell Carroll for 2m or so, bring in Rustu on a free and Howard for 1.5m. Let these two battle Lopez for the top keeper. Only problem with this is it could hurt United's title aspirations next season, but might have long lasting effects if Howard does in fact become a great GK.

Someone was telling me the other day that the USA produce so many good keepers because a lot of American sports (American Football, Baseball, Basketball, etc) involve hand-to-ball co-ordination rather than football (soccer) that involves foot-to-ball co-ordination. Sounds reasonable to me

As for AEBM saying that yanks aren't good enough to play for United - as the biggest team in the World should we not be getting the best players in the World no matter what their nationality? And with United trying to break into the US market now I'd say that the chances of a yank coming to United right now would be extremely high!
