United Academy Streak - 3883 Consecutive Games

City having no youth player with all the no way gone there is a disgrace.
Bet their youth couches get no job satisfaction.
They've had Brahim and Foden in matchday squads and getting the odd minute here and there but the last few matches I don't think they've even made the bench.

Tony Coton disagrees on the youth front:
"Comparing the two clubs from when I was there to now, oh my God its a billion, trillion miles apart from when I was there.

"The football they play is magnificent. They have got the best manager in the world and he's shown he'll throw in youth, which is great for his recruitment people.

"He has thrown in Phil Foden and [Brahim] Diaz, which is magnificent when you're spending all this money but still throwing in homegrown players.
Brahim minutes: 171 (30 in the PL)
Foden minutes: 302 (17 in the PL)

Brahim only has a year left on his contract so I think there's a chance he'll be leaving unless he gets more minutes.

Because he has hardly make any senior appearances for us before he left. And we 'bought' a different Pogba, a much more mature pogba from Juventus after some 5 years.

Whose academy did he come through?

Anyone know when the last time was an academy player didn’t make it onto the pitch for us? I’m guessing in this run there has been games where there was an academy player on the bench, but never made it into the pitch.

Be surprised if it’s any time lately though, but interested to know anyways.

I initially thought under Van Gaal early in 14/15 (qpr game) after welbeck sale and us losing identity and stuff but we started that game with rafael Blackett Evans and Januzaj came off the bench. So no I don’t think recently we have done so

Not sure, but wasn't it only recent that our run of having an academy player in the starting XI ended. I think it was under LVG, but I may be wrong.

Rashford is here, the streak will be safe for another ten years :wenger:

Okay, so a bit earlier than I originally guessed. Fergie ended the run of academy players in the starting XI in 2011 in a match against Arsenal.

It was good when it was about playing in games. Now it's just a player in a squad of 18 it seems pretty meaningless tbh.

Do you know when the last time we played a game was without an academy player kicking a ball?

Seems you know that run has been broken but I can’t think of when.

Did an academy graduate come on in that game though? If so then an academy player still played a part.

My initial thought was late LVG just before Rashford broke on to the scene possibly.
No O'Shea remained on the bench. That's the game the streak ended. I don't know how many times it has happened since.

This data is from 2016

AC Milan - December 2014
Ajax - September 1981
Atletico Madrid - January 2009
Bayern Munich - April 2002
Borussia Dortmund - January 2003
Barcelona - April 1963
Porto - January 2015
Inter Milan - March 2014
Real Madrid - February 1965

So Ajax 34 years, Real Madrid 51 years, Barcelona 53 years...Manchester United 79 years

With the date against Fulham on 30th October 1937 being the start of the run...we are now over 80 years.

Anyone know what happened before the 1937 Fulham game? Were all players bought from other teams, did we not have an academy?

Great record to have.
How long is Bilbao's record. Among all the European clubs, think theirs is the only one whose streak might be longer than ours

Our first youth player was Tom Manley in 1932 but there were period between 1932 and 1937 when we didn't have youth players in the team.

In terms of your specific question. No...we didn't have a real Academy before 1938 although we had an U/18 team playing in the Manchester League from 1932. Our youth policy only started with the formation of the MUJAC's in 1938.

It was very similar for all other clubs.

No-one had the money or other resources to focus on youth development so most players were both from other clubs.

Thanks, good info.

Norwich at home in December 2015

The streak won't be in danger as long as Ole's at the wheel.

Five academy products featured for United yesterday, zero for the dippers. Arnold apart has any academy product even reached five apps for them this season?

I really do feel there are very few clubs that care about these things and we happen to be one of them.

In the current transfer climate you definitely have to go the Fergie way and make sure that a large part of your squad is filled with academy players . You can spend big money on some players and still have a big enough squad .

I thought there was a more recent thread than this one but couldn't find it.

Anyway, we seem to be close to finally ending this record at the moment.

With Rashford, Garnacho, McTominay and Heaton out we're pretty much relying on Elanga and Mainoo to be included on the bench.

Wouldn't worry too much about it to be honest. Elanga is for sure going to be on the bench at least, we've got feck all else.

Pretty sure Elanga will be in the squad considering Rashfords injury and Martials fitness record

Would be negligent to let it end. If players are injured, just stick a youth player on the bench.

We've had worse injury crises in the past

With the number of subs allowed now, this record should go forever.

Very cool stat though.

Especially in Europe with 12 subs. If this was a PL game with 9 subs who knows, neither Elanga nor Mainoo might not make it. A bit worried in this regard for Sunday. Shaw being out might open it up for Williams though.
