UEFA Super Cup - Barcelona vs Sevilla (7:45PM BST Kick Off)

Yes, there was a match, I don't remember which one, if they didn't win it Luis Enrique would have been fired.

Which goes to show how high the expectations and standards are there when we have been celebrating 4th place finish because it was an improvement over 7th we had the season before. They were in as deep a crisis as we are currently in back around 2003 and then again in 2008 when we knocked them out of CL after a run of poor performances from their team. They crawled their way back amongst the best within months/couple of years.

I remember in Rakitić thread some saying he doesnt belong there and he sticks out cause he's not on the same level.

I don't know why anyone would say that, he brings a totally different dimension with the way he makes perfectly timed runs into the box when the defense is occupied with either Suarez or Messi. I didn't think they could really get better when they had Xavi, Iniesta, Eto etc in prime but those two changed that attack for the better.

Match against Atletico, which kind of was the turning point of the season.

If I werent lazy I'd find some of those posts.

Their expectations are much higher but it also helps to have a much more talented team and a better transfer strategy.

Put Immobile and Konoplyanka on and just run the ball forward..
Really eager to see what Konoplyanka can do. Apparently he wants to play for Barca one day(according to his dad) so must be eager to impress.

Having one of the best players of all time on your team helps in that regard.

They still had some of the best players in the world though and a brilliant academy. We don't have a single world class player now except DDG.

They paid very high money over the same time too, Neymar with all the shady money included was around the same as Bale, Suarez was a big money acquisition, Rakitic & Mathieu came for a good price but they also spent on duds like Vermaelen, Song etc. They were lucky all the big money signings worked out unlike Di Maria for us.

firstly, no one said he is shit, most of us said he isnt good enough there is a big difference.....
can only say for myself and i seen a lot of barca this season, he had the same problems every time i watched them.

Watched the match again, and no, I'm not seeing it. He works hard but so does most of the team. They should either get Thiago back or sign Oliver Torres. Strange to see such a player in the same team as such players.

He doesn't strike me as having any one particular skill that sets him above most other players. He has a lot going for him in a lot of departments though.

Compare to Fabregas, who has much superior technique and passing range - Rakitic lacks that sort of peak competence, but makes up for it with solid overall ability.

Here you go.

True but if you took Messi out they wuld still be great IMO. He runs the team though so it's hard to say obviously but the focus on improving the team is very strong there - see Neymar, Suarez or even Ibrahimovic transfers.

Barca are great but this is seriously pathetic from Sevilla. What a joke from a defensive POV :wenger:

I guess it doesn't help they are missing a good number of defensive players and have to play Krychowiak there. He is a poor defender.

That's not luck at all. They put their big money signings in the best conditions to perform and that wasn't truly the case with ADM (a risk taking player playing under a very conservative manager and team). We bought Di Maria for the sake of it without even properly thinking if he could work in LVG's system. That was a stupid buy all things considered.

I just don't get it. Why do Sevilla insist on playing it out from the back when Barca have 6-7 players well high up in their area? Sometimes, however much you wan't to play nice football, you just have to go long. Park the bus (when the ball is in your area, you can assign some players to press in opposition area) and hit them on the counter, a nice long ball, 3v3 in Barca's area and they can hurt them. Btw, i hate long balls.

Don't they sort of have a shit transfer record?

Average I'd say. They managed to bring back Pique, Alba and Fabregas (not a success) and build a mainstay of the team with players like Eto'o, Alves or currently Neymar and Suarez but they've also signed Chygrynskyi, Hleb and Song.

You should buy from us rather than Madrid. Just check recent records: ADM + Ozil vs Cesc + Alexis.
Pay us good money for Pedro, send in another 10m

There you go, quick transition, 4v4, opportunity to score.

Sevilla can definitely do better than this. Don't get me wrong take nothing away from Barca they are simply a level above most teams but you'd have to question the fitness of some of Sevilla's players after the mass salmonella poisoning. Adil Rami for instance also got salmonella but he's playing.

Yeah fair point, they haven't been shy in setting high standards in the transfer market.
