U23s: Tottenham vs Manchester United

Spurs do look more determined. Poch is in the stands, so that's an extra incentive after two straight defeats.
Yeah they really do, just watching the lads and at one point we lost the ball and immediately heads went down and then people broke in to a jog with little effort to get back.
We look a right mess, very Sunday league-ish.

Can also see that Shaw is "taking care" of himself. Nothing wrong with that but a few occasions you can see he hasn't put himself in a position where he could get hurt where in if it was a 1st team game you know he would.

It takes a very tactically adept manager and a well drilled team to get the better of team that plays a high pressing game. I think we have the better players tonight but we've been tactically outclassed especially in the first half. It's a fairly new team and a new manager so it might take a few more games to take shape. That said, I expected better.

Ummmm not really. Hit it over the top and by pass the press. End of issue.
Tactical mastermind I am.

Wilson a few years ago was one of the best players I've seen at English youth level. He was exciting and had real self-belief. Bit sad to see him looking lost now against these kids. Think he should move on before the deadline and work his way back up.

Same could be said for Keane also. He was regarded more than Harry Kane at one point.

Well, we would time and space to be in possession, then pass it over the top. It tells you the story when our calmest player, Tuanzebe has made a few too many errors because of the pressure.

True but in the case of Wilson he had the taste of the bright lights and for one reason or another his career has never really got going after that.

Largely due to injuries and not suiting LvG's style of play, but his attitude was called into question by Warren Joyce during an interview a few months back.

I remember having really high hopes for Wilson at a certain time but those hopes got crushed quickly after.

Off topic, did Spurs have a reserve player that looks and plays a bit like Bale?

Yeah I remember most of his games under LvG came on the right wing. The attitude thing surprises me as while he was very cocksure, he never struck me as someone who is troublesome. Maybe it's more his languid play was misrepresented as a sign of laziness?

I think it's more to do with easing off with regards to his application after making his first team debut. He probably felt the he had a "made it" after that.

After getting his £30k a week contract more like.

Indeed. That's why it's important to time their debuts correctly.

It's difficult for a player returning to playing in half empty stadiums after they've had a taste of the big time.

Macheda was on fire that season for The Reserves. To go from that high to playing for The Reserves again is a difficult thing to handle.

Hopefully Gomes will keep working hard and not let his debut in May affect him. It's still a slippery slope to first team riches.

I'm a bit indifferent generally when people say things like that because it seems to be the go-to thing when a young player doesn't go on to make a big impact. It's down to the coaches and the club staff to create an environment where there is never time to ease off. Januzaj, Wilson, Memphis, Macheda and even Tom Cleverly [remember 'The Brand'..] have been accused of thinking they've 'made it' as a reason why they didn't succeed. I doubt the Co92 were all goody-two-shoes, Lee Sharpe certainly wasn't but Fergie, Harrison and the other staff cultivated that environment where if you don't keep up then you're gone.

Some do buy into the hype, others have rough circumstance [injuries, blocked paths to the first team] and many are just not good enough.

There is only so much a coach or manager can do.

He can't control what they do in their spare time. Sleeping habits, diet outside of training and off the field activities like playing too much golf are down to the player to control. Sacrifices have to be made. Some players avoid the gym and don't alway eat the best when eyes aren't watching, while others are perfectionists. As Joyce said, they put the work in to get to where they were and then stopped doing the things that got them there in the 1st place.

Players have a lot more power now as well. They're all on good money from a young age and their agents can cause PR nightmares for the club.

I agree with you: by all accounts training at United can be a fairly unforgiving place. Perhaps it's an initial feeling of having made it, before a quick realisation that you're further behind than you even thought you were before.
