U23s: Southampton vs Manchester United

There was series of misfortune that lead to the opening goal. They got a lot of breaks.

Weir didn't take his two chances and we were punished from a set-piece.

There are players who aren't good enough, there are players who are too young and there are players who are playing in a wrong position. The result of all that can't be good. And the situation with the striker is just stupid. We have had this problem for years....
What players are too young?

How is my boy Callum Gribbin been doing? Been long since I have watched our reserves.

I saw MrMujac single out Tuanzebe for both goals.

For the corner goal, he starts off marking the no.6 and Weir is marking the goalscorer (no.5). At the last second, the two Southampton players run in opposite directions. In the end, both Weir and Tuanzebe are left too far apart from their men.

Poor from both players. Intelligent movement from them, but Weir could have done better.

The number of injuries are ridiculous considering it's still August. Still considering the make up of the squad without injuries (bunch of central midfielders + only 1 winger who's not fit enough to play a full game (Mitchell) + 1 winger/striker who didn't play a single U21s game last season (Doughty) + no striker) it's too much to ask for Joyce to work his magic.

Yep got a back injury, isn't too serious apparently.
Thought he came back from that, I'm sure he played in the senior cup, unless hes injured again, hopefully it doesn't keep him out for the season

We need to sign an El Fitouri who's a striker and is there to play every game. Treat our U23 team they way Barcelona did under Pep who had players like Nolito in with the young prospects to allow them to grow.

Obviously not a player of that calibre, but you get what I mean.

Precisely. It's not easy to find a good enough striker who's willing to play only U23s football though.

After Joyce's post-match interview I would be surprised if Harrop and Weir are still here playing next game and looks like both Gribbin and Dearnley will be out for a while so don't know how will we cope with that.

There seems to have been a recruitment freeze at youth level at one stage. There are just 7 players currently aged 19, and all but 1 of them was promoted from the United school kids. The other is Josh Doughty, who joined 2 years later. One of these: CBJ is out on loan, leaving just 6 19-year old players to pick from. I don't think any of those 19 years olds were recruited as a special talent either. Surely there should've been at least 11 players in each year? This is compounded by United shipping players out pronto when they reach the age of 20. Ashley Fletcher left because he could. Because he had no contract renewal offer before his contract ran out. Loads of special talents at 16 now (even if they're losing matches they look like they can play). Not a lot in later teens, and the few who are out on loan or in the 1st team squad.

What did he say about Harrop and Weir? My stream cut out so I missed the post match.

He said there will be more players going out in the next week or so.Looking at the current U23s team Harrop and Weir are the obvious ones and they have been linked with clubs as well.

Redmond looks like he's steadily going back to his old ways of just not doing much. Suspect he's one of the main culprits of Joyce's words after the match. Passive on the ball and lost positionally and it's not like he has the work ethic of a James Weir to make up for it either, not good.

having a team filled with 18 and 19 year olds requires leadership - and strong characters. This team appears to lack both
In a league against other teams filled with 18 and 19 year olds. The likes of Axel, Weir, and Williams are good leaders and have good character as well. None of the players out there are too young.

The team lacks an actual setup, shape, and game plan.

This. There's individual talent there, which is all you can ask from the kids themselves. The problems, such as they are, should be laid at the feet of the management.

Agree with both you and limerick but i dont think there is individual talent here, at least not in the team that played today where only real quality you had was Harrop(and Tuanzebe obviously but he is irrelevant for this) and he was playing out of position. The rest are either average players(Redmond, Willock, Weir) or players that are great in supporting role(Kehinde) but that means little as they dont have anybody to support...
The squad is unbalanced, we had 5 central midfielders playing behind one winger....you cant expect much from that team, specially when they are against a good side like Southampton with Hesketh and Reed.

Well yes, those are three of the individual talents I was referring to.

El Fitouri, Weir, Harrop, and Willock were the senior players tonight. I guess he expects more from them. I think Joyce is just lashing out because he doesn't have a lot of players to choose from. There was a bit of a recruitment freeze for 19 year olds. Too few players to select from aged 18/19. 2 players in the list below left in the summer. 2 are in the first team. 1 is out on loan. Leaving just 12 players aged 18/19 to select from. Not that many over 19 either since they tend to be kicked out once they get that old. No natural striker available. Doughty - I've never even seen play!

Situation (numbers + attacking talent) a lot better in 16 + 17 year old groups.

You've got that the wrong way round. Tuanzebe starts off marking the goal scorer. He is completely at fault for the goal. Watch towards the end of the clip (post 34 in this thread) when they show various replays highlighting the starting positions when the corner is taken. Common sense would also tell you Tuanzebe is likely to be marking the taller player. And his defensive header for their first goal managed to put the ball in just about the last place you want it to go, centrally well inside the area. We'd have been far better off if he had left the ball as we had 2 players in decent position to clear it !

Woah Warren Joyce must be royally pissed off. Never seen anything like this before.

I am a bit surprised by the attack on the players. I mean if you pick a side with 6 central midfielders and no wingers or strikers in it, how can you expect to play good football?

There's still a minimum standard required, regardless. Whether that's application, work rate or whatever. It wouldn't be the 1st time that he's put out such a team anyway.

At no point do I see Tuanzbe closer to no.5 than no.6 during the corner.

Shouldn't 6 CMs lead to good but non-penetrative play? Like a lower-table La Liga side that tries to play nice football but lacks athletes and proper talent up top?

Was actually referring to the time Keane had a go at the young players, in the first team, on MUTV and was fecked out :D

I believe Keane's attack was focuses on specific individuals, rather than the group as a whole. He probably used language not suited for the airwaves. Mad fecker.

It's good that MUTV allowed this interview.

Would love to see that interview. Would be like hearing someone read out the posts on the Caf after that game
