U21s: United vs. Wolves

Beautiful turn by Januzaj there.

I really don't like Buttner, he always tries too hard to take the players on himself like he's a winger when he could just play simple passes.

Lingard had a nice chance from a lose ball in the box but the shot was blocked immediately.

Came from Januzaj's pass. Again he seems the most likely to make something happen.

Powell and Januzaj are showing they're not forwards, their movement in the box when we have Wolves pinner back is lacking.

Cole found the ball at his feet from a corner but he scuffs the bouncing ball and it flubs wide.

I'd like to think that we could dribble past someone in the middle of the pitch, but very little of that happening.

I wonder if playing with an extra man is discouraging the players from more aggressive passes because there's always an open man.

Ah, thought he might have lost the ball, was a nice run by him there was well.

Nah, that run was someone else. Januzaj was the one that fed that run with a gun pass with outside of his left foot after holding off a defender.

The guy making that run lost the ball and it fell to Lingard.

Oh that was beautiful, ando should have finished!

Buttner doesn't half act like a headless chicken sometimes.

Ando should have done better there. Nice little back heel from Powell though.

Lingard with a good pass and what a flick by Powell.

Wow, what a fantastic chance, and a great flick from Powell! Lingard sends it into the box and Powell flicks on to Anderson at the far post and a gaping net. Anderson doesn't even hit the target.

Buttner doesn't half act like a headless chicken sometimes.

Sometimes? He's always a headless chicken, pisses me off when he's closer to his own box than the halfway line and he's constantly trying to turn players and take it on himself like he's Evra.

Would be nice for the 21's to have a striker to act as a focal point for the team. To create more space for the midfield with their runs and to put pressure on the opposition more.

We should be doing better against 10 men, thought Wolves are defending admirably. So far the most entertaining thing about this game is the complete lack of chemistry between Lou Macari and the other guy (Stewart Gardner?).

Would be nice for Cole to take on players again too. He's barely involved in games these days except for some touches.

Have they really picked this piece of music purely for the "Schlupp - hammer time" pun?

Would be nice for Cole to take on players again too. He's barely involved in games these days except for some touches.

I keep forgetting he's on the pitch during games, yet he's played more games for the U21s than anyone else! He was all over the highlights last season, so while his return has been better than most, its been a bit of a let down to my mind.

Good work by Buttner. Lingard misses the chance.

I know that this is a regular moan, but I would have liked to have seen Veseli come off instead of Januzaj there. When trying to win the match against a 10 man Wolves, why not take off a defensive player.

Joyce seems to set sides up not to lose, rather than to win.

Yup Januzaj seemed to be the only one who was willing to make an incisive pass.

Cole seems to have really stagnated, I don't see a united future for him right now. Hope he gets to go on loan next year.

Yeah, he's become far too inexpressive. Still got time but it's a shame.

Not having a striker more experienced than Lawrence hurts. The lack of movement and danger up top allows the defense to squeeze the midfield and the wings without having to worry much about the through ball.

Good to see ando completing 90 minutes :)

Finally something a little bit exciting and then Cole misses :(

Even now we have them pinned back but no one was in the box at all.

Cole misses a great chance as Lawrence touches Lingard pass towards Cole on the far post, goes just wide past a half open net. Not unlike the Anderson miss.

Cole decides to copy Anderson by putting that one impossibly wide.

We're a bit too slow in regards to getting the ball into the box across the goalmouth.

Under-21s: United 0 Wolves 0

United's Under-21s were frustrated by 10-man Wolves in freezing conditions at Moss Lane despite Chris Smalling and Anderson getting a full run-out.

First-team managers Sir Alex Ferguson and Dean Saunders were in attendance but there was precious little goalmouth excitement, thanks largely to some resilient defending by the Black Country outfit.

The visitors began brightly, particularly Zeli Ismail, who fired a shot over the bar and displayed exceptional pace on a couple of occasions. However, the winger's main contribution to the game was an awful two-footed lunge on Smalling that forced referee Matthew Parry to take swift action by producing a red card. Mercifully, Smalling was able to continue after treatment.

With 80 minutes still to play, Wolves naturally set out their stall to defend but Sam Johnstone was still the busier of the two goalkeepers for a spell. It took 25 minutes for the Reds to muster a chance but Nick Powell shot wide from Alexander Büttner's driven cross before Liam McAlinden's volley forced Johnstone to push the ball wide.

The treacherous surface led to a number of players losing their footing and United struggled to break down the massed ranks of all gold. Büttner was flagged offside when hammering well off target in any case from an Anderson pass and Larnell Cole choked a volley following an Adnan Januzaj corner.

In first-half stoppage time, Anderson wasted a glorious opportunity to break the deadlock when failing to provide the finish that a lovely move, culminating in Powell's brilliant flick to Jesse Lingard's pass, thoroughly deserved. The pattern of play remained the same after the interval with Wolves holding out pretty comfortably, even though Lingard did hammer one opening wide and Cole smashed an attempt out of the ground.

Lingard had a shot blocked but Smalling got a vital touch to distract McAlinden at the other end as the 10 men looked for a goal completely against the run of play with the game entering the final 15 minutes.

The chance to take the points came with six minutes remaining as Lingard and substitute Tom Lawrence opened up the defence but Cole shot wastefully wide when a winner seemed certain. Lawrence and Powell had later efforts but, despite another clean sheet, this was a disappointing night for Warren Joyce's side.

United: Johnstone; Vermijl, Thorpe, Smalling, Buttner; Cole, Veseli, Anderson, Lingard; Januzaj (Lawrence 60); Powell. Subs not used: McGinty, Gollini, Blackett, Ekangamene.
