U21s: United vs. City

Seniority often rules in the 21s, but Pereira has been much better than Petrucci last couple of games and would like to see him get a longer run.

they are quite similar in many respects. Ultimately I not sure Petrucci is mobile enough for English football. Perreira is much better in that respect. Hes also a lot more naturally aggressive these days.

Top prospect.

I agree. Petrucci must be in his last season here I'd think. I don't see Pereira being a 10 for us, but I see him being a very good 8 in future. Great passing, vision and long range shot, in addition to aggression and tackling ability. As he strengthens, he'll be some player. Isn't he still 17 too?

I'll whisper it quietly but if he continues to improve at his current rate, i can see him progressing to the first team similar to the way Adnan did . I dont expect him to get a chance this season but maybe he could do enough to make the squad for the summer tour.

I agree, and have been thinking the same, although he needs to play regularly for the 21s first, which won't happen while Petrucci is here due to seniority I think. If he can overcome that, I can see him making the tour too.

U21s: United 1 Man City 2
Manchester United were beaten in the Under-21 derby at the AJ Bell Stadium with Greg Leigh and George Glendon netting for the Blues and Jesse Lingard on the scoresheet again for Warren Joyce's side.

With the neighbours level on points in the division heading into the fixture, the result is a damaging one in terms of reaching the semi-finals of the Barclays Under-21 competition but there can be few complaints despite the Reds registering more shots on goal.

Although Ian Lawlor was first to be called into action, after Lingard burst onto a Joe Rothwell through ball, City went ahead inside the first 10 minutes. Sam Johnstone pulled off an amazing save to deny Leigh but the left-back rose highest to power home the resulting corner.

Lingard drove forward to again test Lawlor and the City keeper made an instinctive stop with his right boot to deny Davide Petrucci after a neat move led to Rothwell supplying an inviting cut-back. The clearest chance came on the stroke of half-time when Will Keane somehow headed wide from close range from Petrucci's fine cross.

It took less than two minutes of the second half for United to level as Petrucci's cute pass into the path of Lingard allowed the quicksilver forward to advance on goal and supply a classic finish past Lawlor. Yet it spurred the Blues into an impressive response with Jordy Hiwula passing up a glaring opening before Devante Cole's powerful run past Donald Love enabled Glendon to net with the aid of a slight deflection.

City dominated for a spell and dictated the tempo with an exhibition of passing but Larnell Cole mustered a shot at Lawlor when panic ensued from a Reece James cross into the six-yard box. Lingard forced another sprawling save out of Lawlor after a Larnell Cole shot was blocked with Rothwell then hammering off target with his final touch before being replaced by Andreas Pereira.

Larnell Cole cut inside, only to fire wide at the near post, and there was no real late rally by the Reds, despite four minutes of injury time, with the visitors pretty comfortable in defence to clinch an eighth successive win at Under-21 level.

Joyce's youngsters are in action again next Monday at Leicester City's King Power Stadium, with the game again live on MUTV and there is a need to get three points on the board if the team is to start climbing the table.

United: Johnstone; Love (Janko 62), Thorpe, Ekangamene, Blackett; Cole, Petrucci (Pearson 78), Rothwell (A.Pereira 75), James; Lingard; W.Keane. Subs not used: Gollini, Varela.
