U21s: Sunderland vs. Manchester United

In terms of individual attacking quality this is possibly one of the worst groups we have had in a while, hard to get excited about most of the players playing in attacking positions.

There's hardly any attacking player either.Fletcher is the only striker.Willock is a CM.Same with Weir who's a bit of jack of all trades and of course El-Fitouri is a full back.

Need to put Gribbo and Rothwell on the boost up the number in the offensive department.Would like Rathbone to make an appearance but this game looks too physical for him.

few years ago we played with 8 defenders in the team so this is pretty good :D
its a transitional year at U21, best players are on loans or with the first team(only Harrop at U21) and the best younger ones are still with the U18

There is no one bar CBJ really in the 96 lot and the early 97s, still need to wait for the current u18s to step up. Been unfortunate with the injuries to Rashford and Demi Mitchell always being injured.

Varela is probably looking the best player out there.

I really do like the look of Varela. Don't know what the score was last season but I hope he gets some tour minutes next year.

He's too comfy at this level. If he's not gonna be involved in first team cup games we need to ship him out for the season.

"Back in the middle, Timmy!!"

Long-ball from Johnstone, comes off a S-land defender and Reid poaches it.

You watching South Park?
:D

Weir might not be the most gifted but I like him. He gives 100% to the last minute of every game. He's a good asset for a team to have.

Livin a lie JIMMIES! Jimmy Johnstone!

I just realised that Goss wasn't involved. Hopefully he is involved on Wednesday vs Boro.

Good that Reid looks very comfortable already at this level.

Bit of a daft match though.

I didn't really think he looked all that comfortable, but then he's no left winger.

Yet another fine CB performance by BJ, once again he outshines Tuanzebe. He's not a bad LB but he's clearly a natural central player and sooner or later we're gonna have to start cultivating him as such.

Who were the best players in this match?

Hopefully Goss & Harrop make the bench tomorrow given that they weren't in this squad.

Riley had a good game at leftback. He was my pick for best player. But generally it was a game where most players were decent - few were really good.

Interesting to see Ei-Fitouri play reasonably well. Who knew that he might have needed just a little bit of time to adjust to the step up in level. Thought he played with some confidence and contributed well to the team.

I don't think Riley defended exceptionally well - thought LB obviously not his best position. He was beaten in a few occasions.

He kept the ball and passed well but he's clearly no winger - no penetration at all, a lot of "safe passes".
