Under-21s: United 0 Boro 0

Manchester United's Under-21s played out a frustrating 0-0 stalemate with Middlesbrough at the AJ Bell Stadium.
Warren Joyce's side dominated throughout but were unable to find a way past Connor Ripley despite bringing Wilfried Zaha off the bench to bring his unique wing-play to the match.
The home side were quick out of the blocks with Will Keane having two early headed efforts and Larnell Cole belting a shot wide from outside the box. A lovely move involving the buccaneering Fabio and Cole led to Jesse Lingard flashing a decent strike just wide as the Reds dominated.
Boro started to cause problems of their own with a Tom Thorpe clearance off Charni Ekangamene leaving Sam Johnstone stranded but, thankfully, flying the wrong side of the right-hand post. Thorpe also had to bail out Ekangamene with a desperate tackle on Bradley Fewster after a misjudgment by his central defensive partner while Cameron Park saw a shot deflected wide.
However, United continued to create a steady stream of chances with Ripley somehow keeping out Tyler Blackett when he looked to certain to convert a Fabio centre. Cole pulled the ball back for Lingard to again test Ripley's reflexes and a decent opening was spurned by Will Keane on the stroke of half-time when the centre-forward lobbed over the bar after being picked out by Reece James' fine pass.
The Teessiders enjoyed more possession after the break and Joyce introduced Wilfried Zaha in place of Federico Macheda on the wing. Ekangamene again went close to finding his own net with a defensive header but Keane was unlucky to be ruled offside when expertly volleying in a pass over the top by Davide Petrucci.
The same duo combined again when Petrucci won the ball with a superb tackle and then crossed to the far post, after reaching a Fabio pass, but Keane's towering header was straight at Ripley. The visiting keeper then pulled off a remarkable one-handed save to deny substitute Zaha.
Zaha was certainly having an impact on proceedings and his neat touch released Cole, who could only bend a drive off target. The goal just would not come as Keane was thwarted by Ripley at point-blank range and Thorpe headed a glorious chance over from the resulting corner.
Zaha failed to capitalise on a rare mistake by Ripley and Thorpe's header wide in stoppage time proved to be the final effort as Boro somehow managed to keep a clean sheet despite facing 17 shots on their goal.

United: Johnstone; Fabio (Janko 71), Thorpe, Ekangamene, Blackett (A.Pereira 80); Cole, Petrucci, Lingard, James, Macheda (Zaha 55); W.Keane. Subs not used: Gollini, Rothwell.

Even in his brief cameo, Pereira added further evidence to my view that he is really maturing this season and stepping up. He has really taken charge of late, and I'd like to see him start for the 21s and see what happens.

Petrucci was disappointing, although I can't help but feel we kind of missed the 'right time' to put him into the first team. If he had been put in a bit earlier, I think he would have kicked on, but he's been boxed in at this level for years now and is going backwards.

Yeah Pereira showed that he has that specialness about him. Petrucci started off poor but grew into the game I felt, he has a decent range of passing.

But james for me was a standout talent, I kept my eye on him, and his speed of thought and passing ability is really good.

Petrucci wasn't ready for the first team before his injury and he hasn't really looked good enough since. Great shame, he was a sensational prospect but losing 2 formative years has taken it's toll.

He did well on tour a couple of years ago, and I remember him travelling with the squad to WHL in the league too. Basically, the odd cameo around that time would have motivated him I think and pushed him on.

Last few games I've seen Pereira in he really seems to be trying to impose himself and affect games which is nice to see and hopefully he can keep it going and do it more consistently. I think he has something special.

Fabio had a really good game, I find his predicament crazy. I thought Zaha had some good moments and the odd wasteful one or two. Definitely would like to see him go on loan. It'd be the best thing for his development seeing as he's not getting first team games here and it would hopefully prevent him stagnating (or regressing).

He did alright on tour two summers ago but he was clearly not at his best. He slowly regained a bit of sharpness for the u21s during the first half of the season but still didn't do much at Peterborough. I don't think motivation was ever an issue with him, injuries were.

I hadn't seen James in central midfield before, that I can recall, anyone know if he's done much of that?

I'm sure last season I used to see him on the left wing, then he was moved to left back. He said in his post match interview that he prefers a centre mid position, and the way he played yesterday I don't think you can make an argument against it.

Still can figure out why Thorpe isnt out on loan. Thought he played v well in this game. Bailed out the defence on 2 or 3 occasions. Showed an impressive turn of foot and his usual reliable reading of the game.

Easily good enough for a decent championship side.

Also nearly brilliantly set-up an own goal for Charni!

But in anycase, he's very talented, but I think people may not fancy him physically yet for a centre-half.

Word. It baffles me that we're not more proactive with pushing players who have taken all they're gonna take from this level on to the next one. Not only does it lead to stagnation of the player in question but it also blocks the path of younger players coming up behind.
