Win or a draw after 90 minutes and we’re through to the next round. A defeat in 90 minutes and we’re out.

How far is Yoro away from getting some minutes at U21 - anyone knows ?

Perhaps he won't? Might go straight to the first team.
Never know, Amorim might want to see him get some minutes this week while everyone else is on international break and he can get some vs Huddersfield. Ruben might even be in attendance casting his eye over which Academy players he might want to promote.

Now that would be exciting.

Huddersfield have no game at the weekend so I suspect they might play a stronger side than we usually see from EFL sides in this competition.

Our u23s and youth would benefit a lot more coming up against professional quality and physically developed players every week if they could. If that’s the case we mightn’t win but it’ll be a good experience instead of going through the motions against similar aged sides with much less money and resources

Why is that out of interest? E.g. due to being away team, U21s or something else?

Group standings:

Doncaster 3 +3 7
United 2 +1 5
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Huddersfield 2 +1 3
Barnsley 3 -5 0

Win in 90 minutes - 3 points
Win in a penalty shootout - 2 points
Defeat in a penalty shootout - 1 point
Defeat in 90 minutes - 0 points

That’s why ;)

Out of the other PL clubs:

- Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs, Newcastle, West Ham, Everton, Palace, Wolves, Fulham and Leicester are out of the competition after the group stage.

- Forest, Villa, Man City, Brighton and Arsenal have a chance to progress.

All final fixtures apart from one will be played tonight.

Highlights the step up in level that playing against professional league players represents. Despite a mixed bag in PL2 , we’ve done well in this tournament so far this year. Great test tonight, with new manager factor an obvious motivation for the players, so it should be an interesting watch. Fingers crossed.

Not even sure - have we ever made it to the knock-out stage in this tournament before?

Yes, three times (out of five efforts):

2019/20 we won the group with full 9 points, got knocked out by Tranmere in the first knockout round
2020/21 finished second in the group, again exit in the next round after a defeat to Accrington Stanley
2022/23 topped the group, beat Wolves U21s in penalties in the next round, lost to Bolton in the Ro16

Thanks. And thanks for all you contribute in here, it’s appreciated.

Frustrating to have the crucial final round of fixtures in a week when the U21 sides are going to be without plenty due to internationals. Not saying that should be taken into the equation - and even if it was, it would probably be deemed a positive as it increases the chances for the lower league teams.

Shame we go into this game without any of our three main strikers in Wheatley, Obi-Martin or Biancheri. And relying solely on Musa as the only striker in the matchday squad.

Good to see Malacia fit and featuring, and Kone starting.

Wouldn't mind watching this. Shame it's a bit of a ballache to find a stream for these kinds of games.
