U18s: United vs Coventry | Live on MUTV for some

Can't believe I've just heard a United commentator say "swaz"

Followed up with a 'clutch'
I'm having to watch the game on mute - but at least I missed that!

Very dominant first half. A little lull half way through after they started back after the injury delay - but picked it up again in the last 10 minutes and should have had more.

Hopefully they'll carry on being as ruthless as usual in the 2nd half and look to add a few more.

You're not getting off that easy...

Chido Obi's "peripheral vision coming up clutch" before he saw a defender's heavy tackle coming and was able to get out of the way.

That was a sneaky free kick, 4-0 Chido Obi again

Quite like Wes Brown but he's just backing the defender every time, it's an absolute stone waller

Biancheri with an awful penalty denying himself of his hat trick

I'd be fuming there, offside Chido Obi's stolen it off the onside Biancheri

Someone's removed the pass button from Obi-Martin's controller

We've made 6 subs?? I hope that's allowed in the rules and not a mistake that gets us a loss.

You're only allowed 5 but concussion subs are allowed. I'm guessing Devaney might have been one as he took a knock in the first-half. Otherwise it's a monumental cock-up.

Biancheri makes it 5-0 and gets his hat trick. Nice composure from Kukonki for the assist.

I hope that Devaney sub was a concussion one for 'not getting kicked out of the Cup' purposes obviously, but not a great look if it is given he took the bang to the head a good half hour(?) before (unless there was another one)

It's me being stupid, it wasn't a concussion sub for Devaney it was for the Coventry player that went off immediately after the collision. They would've used that as a concussion sub & therefore we get an extra sub to use.

Oh great shout. Somehow skimmed over the 'and their opponent' bit in the regs.

Murdock's really good with his feet isn't he. Love how that's becoming almost the default for keepers through our academy.

He's from a family of outfield players. Dad was CB & two younger brothers (one with us and one with Everton) are midfielders.

FT

United 5-0 Coventry (Biancheri x3, Obi x2)

We’ll face Preston at home in the next round.

Remains to be seen whether the long-awaited Derby match will be postponed because of the FAYC fixtures.

Thought Tyler Fletcher was the best player tonight, some really sharp passing and movement. Will be interesting to see his progression.

Crowded field but he might be my shout for most improved player in the academy over the first half of the season.

And I kept thinking that although I am sure we made 6 subs it can't be and I am missing something or maybe lost count..

Was an enjoyable game (from the moment I discovered the youtube channel). Scanlon had a very quiet game for his standards,

I have always felt that he has an advantage over Jack - because Tyler just seems quicker. Jack always looks a bit sluggish when he is playing - Tyler doesn't. But we will see

The Coventry U18 team played a little like us in the past year - headless chicken press with 0 effect, no midfield whatsoever - 3 passes and we were in front of their penalty box the entire game, through balls easily slicing their defence, free runners etc.
The attack for the last goal was really good sequence of possession.

AL:
”It’s always nice to get a dominant performance in and a win in the first game.

“Getting the goals early helped in settling any sort of nerves. I think, in the first half, Coventry’s defensive line was quite high and they weren’t able to get the pressure on the ball that they wanted, so we got into a rhythm quite quickly.

“I think what the boys did well is we attacked them in a variety of ways. Sometimes, we went through the middle, the diagonals to the opposite side of the pitch were another way, and we spoke about wanting to play forward and run forward early on in the game as well. I thought we did those things.”

”Once you get that lead, it’s about the good habits and being professional in the right moments, and I thought we did that, particularly in the latter stages of the game, and then you end up killing the game off and being comfortable.

“When you look at this season with this current group, but also the last 18 months, with a lot of these players, of course the results and winning things is a good thing, but the development of the players and the group as a whole has been very, very good.”

JD:
”Last year, we obviously didn’t do as well as what we’d hoped, and I think everyone in the changing room is really confident that we can go on and do well this year.

“We couldn’t have really got off to a better start. Before the game, we wanted to go into it 100 per cent and start on the front foot, which we did, we got a goal early on, and we just carried on from there. We might have been a bit nervous before the game, but getting that early goal really helped us and we went on to put in a good performance.

“I’d been captain in the younger age groups [U12s, U13s, U14s] but it’s something I’d like to take in my stride, obviously it’s a privilege to captain an U18s side at Manchester United. It does feel good, walking out in front of the fans in an evening game in the Youth Cup. You can’t get much better than that in U18s football.”

GB:
”It’s the Youth Cup, it’s the one that everyone looks forward to at the start of the season, wearing the blazer, going out there, you feel it when you touch the grass, and hopefully there are many more of these nights to come.

“The message before was just to play the game and not the occasion. We knew they’d come at us from the start, so we had to start fast.

“The main thing today was to get the result and we did that. The performance came with it as well. Personally, good for me to get three, and onto the next one!”
