U18s: United vs. Bolton

In fairness both teams did have almost 2 months of pretty much no games over Xmas and January because of weather, think they still look a little sluggish.

And good near post header from Byrne, terrific save by the keeper

Yes i guess bit of an excuse - still say final ball and finishing is poor, mind that Bolton CB finished well lol.

Caught the first half, Pearson and Dæhli looked good.

Pearson is exactly the type of player we could do with in the first team, such a shame he's not a couple years older.

Didn't catch this game, so Pearson and Daehli stood out again?

U18s: United 2 Bolton 1

Manchester United's Under-18s got back to winning ways after two consecutive defeats with a 2-1 triumph against Bolton Wanderers.

Paul McGuinness' side were made to work hard for the three points in the sunshine despite taking an early lead through Mats Daehli on his 18th birthday.

The Norwegian was on hand to finish off a neat move after Jack Barmby played in James Weir, who used his strength before pulling the ball back accurately for Daehli.

Bolton had threatened to draw level before Tom Youngs' shot was pushed away by Joel Pereira and Saul Hamer tucked the rebound into an unguarded net for the equaliser.

Ryan McConnell really should have restored the advantage on 69 minutes when somehow contriving to clear the bar from close range after Sam Byrne collected a Weir pass and shot against the base of the far post.

It was a let-off for the Trotters but the winner came in fortuitous circumstances with nine minutes left. Byrne, who worked hard all match and earlier misjudged a Barmby cross that crept through Robert Holding's legs, was the man behind the key goal.

The Irishman twisted and turned inside the area before firing towards goal with his left foot and the ball was helped past his own keeper, Jan Sievers, by Sam Bailey.

United: J.Pereira; Grimshaw, Dalley (A.Pereira 79), McConnell, Evans; Weir, Pearson, Rudge, Barmby, Daehli; Byrne. Subs not used: Willock, Gollini, Harrop, Fletcher.

To answer loads of questions in this thread.

There is an U/18 league which is made up of first year and second year scholars.

The next level down is a U/16 league which is made up of 15/16 year olds.

Because there are so many players at these two levels, on a few occasions this year there have been some U/17 games to ensure players get match time.

There is no U/17 league.

The likes of Harrop, Willock, Fletcher, Goss, Ioannou are first years but because they are a little too young or have more experienced players in front of them they rarely play in the 18's. They have played mostly in the U/16's even though they are older and of course have played in the U/17 friendly games.

Rothwell is a second year but because of injury and illness has been playing down a level to help him with his recovery.

Goss came from Exeter City but has been injured most of the season.

Wilson should return next week after an ankle injury.

Pearson has been with the club since a young boy.

Mitchell and Borthwick-Jackson are in the 16's and you would have seen them on TV playing for England. Mitchell is a fast, tricky winger and Borthwick-Jackson is a left fullback or centre-half. One poster called him more brawn than brain but it's actually the opposite and he is a very classy defender in the Rio mould.

Rashford has also played for England but is a U/15. Not prepared to discuss him on here until he signs as a scholar.

Goss is a weird one - when we signed him last summer everywhere reported that he was already 16, which would have made him a first-year, but the official site has that DOB up. Don't know which is incorrect - my hunch would be the DOB is incorrect, possibly a typo (96 instead of 95), because U16s don't usually get profiles on the site.
