Should be a good test, Sunderland won 6-1 away at Newcastle yesterday.

No streams at the usual places yet, if anyone finds one a pm would be appreciated.

You think Januzaj will play this one as well, to get used to the team ahead of the FAYC? I hope so

Looking at that table above, there's only been two draws in the league thus far.

That's extraordinary, although a little typical of youth football.

Who knows. I'd rather see him for the U21s on Monday though.

According to Skeppy, Rothwell and Ioannou played for the U16s last weekend so hopefully at least one of them will be involved.

It should of course be added that Newcastle have been absolutely horribly bad this season and have lost big most matches when they have lost

Word, but they looked better at Carrington than when we thrashed them away.

Stream, anyone?

I think the match has been postponed or something. No lineups out on twitter, no streams.

MUTV went from the rebroadcast of the statue unveiling to a 'legends' discussion prog which is still running. Wonder if it's been rained off? Would have been nice to get a message on the screen.

Might be a blessing in disguise. The recent lacklustre stuff from the first team always seems so much worse after watching these lads working their magic.

From Mr.Mujac on twitter
U/18's won 4-0 at Sunderland today (Wilson 2, Byrne, Barmby

Wasn't this a top of the table clash? Very good win away from home.

Yup, gooDevil posted the table above. Sunderland were 3rd in the league.

Also interesting we seem to have created a U17 team for us also. They lost 1-2 to Crewe in a friendly again according to Mr. Mujac.

Ah missed that. So with that win we're into the elite group then? Anyone have any idea what teams from other groups have qualified?

Here's the team as posted on manutd.com:

Gollini; Love, Grimshaw, Dalley, Rowley (Evans 46); Barmby, Pearson, Rudge (Wilson 55), Daehli; Januzaj; Byrne (Weir 68).

Seeing that line-up makes the disappointment of the match not being televised even worse.

Our youth team is so much more exciting than the first team. The difference in style and approach makes me sad.

When you look at the MUTV schedule it said the game was being shown on the main page, but when you look at the detailed schedule it wasn't listed. I went ahead and posted that it would be shown just in case, but it seems they decided not to show the game for some reason.

Match report form the official site

U18s: Sunderland 0 United 4
United picked up an impressive and resounding away victory at Sunderland thanks to goals from Sam Byrne, James Wilson (2) and Jack Barmby.

The Reds led at the interval through Byrne's early opener and ran away with the game in the second half to clinch a place in the elite phase of the Barclays Under-18 Premier League.

After smashing North-East rivals Newcastle 6-1 in their last outing, the Black Cats must have had high hopes of upsetting Paul McGuinness' in-form side but fell behind on nine minutes when Irish striker Byrne, who had already missed a good chance, tapped in from close range after Barmby won possession high up the pitch.

Callum Hope hit a post for Sunderland on 25 minutes and that was as good as it got for the home side with Byrne almost adding a second before the break when his effort was well saved by Jonny Maddison.

Mikael Mandron spurned the hosts' clearest opening when heading over the bar from six yards out on 70 minutes and substitute Wilson put the game beyond reach with a quickfire double. The Reds' top scorer punished some sloppy defending to claim his ninth goal of the campaign and reached double figures four minutes later.

Incredibly, Wilson now has seven goals in the North East this term as he turned home following a well-worked short-corner that allowed Mats Daehli to get away down the byline and cut back for the prolific marksman.

Barmby added a fourth with a fine, curling effort that evoked memories of Ashley Young's first strike in the 8-2 win against Arsenal last season, swirling a beautiful shot past Maddison and into the top corner of the net.

It's a selection thing. I agree with you at the moment, but once we start playing Anderson and Cleverley a bit more, the football will come good. Kagawa returning can't hurt that either.

That said, I hope Joyce doesn't damage the style of football which McGuinness has drilled into these boys. It's exactly the sort of thing I'd like to see the first team playing in the future, and if all goes well, the likes of Daehli, Pearson, Pereira etc could be a big part of making that happen.

This Wilson kid has a ridiculous scoring record doesn't he? How does it compare to the likes of Campbell, Welbeck, King and Keane at this level in recent years? Not yet even 17 either!

Also worth noting that Nick Powell is only 2 and a half months too old for this age group. He'd be ridiculous at this level. He is a special talent, and while there are some talented young players in our u-18s, there is an enormous, enormous way to go for them, and talent only gets them so far.

True, but talent is all you can expect from them at this stage, and some of them are as talented as I have ever seen at that level. Also worth noting that, just as Powell is only 2 or 3 months too old for that age level, plenty of them are much younger than 18. Pereira, despite regularly being one of the best on the pitch, is still only 16.

Powell is huge for 18 years old. There are players who are the same age or older than him that haven't played first team football yet that are just as talented, they just aren't physically as ready as he is at the moment and require more patience in their development. 22/23/24 is the ages when our bodies growth reaches its peak in terms of size and natural strength. Some people reach this quicker than others.

It all smacks of 'the grass is greener' though, doesn't it? A never ending conveyor belt of the next big thing, who is going to be even better than the previous next big thing, but not as good as the next next big thing, who is still a few years too young.

Josh Harrop, Bruce Mitchell and one or 2 other players coming up in the next batch are supposed to be good talents too.

Will be interesting to track how they all progress over the next few years.

Demetre Mitchell.

Also interesting that we seem o have created a u17s team this season.

It might smack of that for you, but for me it's just an informed opinion based on having watched a number of generations of youth teams. Whether we actually bring them through at the right time, keep their development going properly etc etc is obviously not up to me, so I can't predict how their futures will turn out. I imagine it will be a bumpier ride than if they were at a number of other clubs, particularly Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool. But I don't blame our management for that - we aim higher than those teams, and the environment created by the cash clubs makes it hard to both compete and promote youth prospects.

Nonetheless, this U18s team is the most promising I've ever seen. That's just my opinion.
