U18s: Southampton vs. United

That's the thing that worries me about Daehli, sometimes he plays great but then other times he struggles to impose himself on the game. I went to the fayc away to Chelsea last year and was raving about him to the people I went with, he had a poor make and they seemed to think I didn't know what I was talking about. Hopefully he proves me right and gain the consistency.

You're wrong here. Daehli has been our one of the most consistent players in this season youth cup.

Btw was I the only one who was annoyed by the Southampton's player celebrations as if they've won the WC.

He's been consistent this season mostly this year, tbf. But it's been on the left mostly.

But when We move him to the middle against a organized side and he gets pushed off the ball or crowded off. It's not a big worry right now, as there have been many players who have had to face this physically early in their career. Iniesta probably being the prime example of this type of player. :p

It will also depend on how he physically grows though. Eikrem at 17 was struggling big time in the u18's despite obvious qualities due to being tiny. Then he had bit of a growth spurt and when he moved to the U21's he began to shine more.

Fair enough, I haven't managed to watch so much as I did last year, but that's good to hear. I do really like the kid, he's great technically.

Youth cup ? I think you mean the league.

So is it worth me watching the game?

Yeah I meant the league.

Our defenders were outdone by their forwards first physically and in the air which meant Gollini had to try and come out for everything and then they were done in for pace on the counter.

Thought Pearson was decent again and Perreira was good in the second half when he had more of the ball. But we really need to give Pearson a decent partner.

He was alone without anyone to pass too short on many occasions with 4 AM's ahead of him who didn't want to come deep.

Barmby was good too. Being a big lad helps him in imposing into the game though.

Come on, that's not true at all. He's been shining in nearly all games this season, and hardly has a game where it's impossible to leave him out as the top 3 performers of the game.

After nearly two years now of watching this group it has to be said defending definitely isn't there strong point. The youth cup winning defence of Blackett-Fornasier-Thorpe-Keane was a lot stronger than this group, not only as a defensive unit but more composed in possession and better as individual prospects as well.

Shame really because the front six of this group's attacking ability, whoever plays, deserves something stronger than that behind them.

Anyway thought Pearson and Barmby were very good again today.

I did say afterwards that I haven't seen so much of the u18s this year so I'm happy to be proved wrong. I do really like him though, when he's on form he's on form, very classy player.

And seeing that nobody answered my question I'm just going to go ahead and watch the match now.

Well, it certainly isn't worse than this Luton vs Milwall match i am watching currently.

That's because we have had two midfielders play as centre-halves all season...

U18s: Southampton 4 United 2

Manchester United's Under-18s slipped to a first league defeat since October when the last team to beat the young Reds repeated the feat in an entertaining affair at Southampton.

The Barclays U18 Premier League Elite Group game started at breakneck speed, with the Saints taking the lead after just two minutes, as Jake Flannigan fired past Pierluigi Gollini after a good run and cross from Gregory Ariyibi on the right wing.

United were level just a minute later though, as good interplay between Jack Barmby and James Weir led to Barmby's shot being pushed away by goalkeeper Chris Jones, but only into the path of Josh Harrop, who slotted into the open net to equalise.

After the frantic opening, the game settled into a calmer pattern, with the hosts testing Gollini from the flanks. Saints defender Jason McCarthy managed to beat the Reds' Italian goalkeeper, but his header was ruled out for a foul by Bevis Mugabi on Patrick McNair in the build up. United also had chances to edge in front with Harrop and Barmby both squandering decent opportunities having been put through on goal as half-time approached.

The second half did not start in the same barnstorming fashion as the first period, although Ariyibi would sting the palms of Gollini from distance, whilst Saints midfielder Sam McQueen screwed his shot wide from the edge of the penalty area. As the hosts grew in confidence, Ryan Seager forced another good save from Gollini from a tight angle.

United's first real opportunity of the second half came with just twenty minutes to go as substitute Sam Byrne's deflected shot thumped off the crossbar with Jones left grasping fresh air, but it was Southampton who would finally make their pressure pay with 15 minutes to go. Gollini failed to claim Wood's deep cross under pressure, and the lively McQueen was on hand to fire through the massed bodies into the unguarded net.

The young Reds reacted well to going behind, and almost replicated the rapid first-half response, as Ben Pearson fired straight at Wood having been played in well by Barmby. The second equaliser would not be denied for long, though, as James Weir pulled United level with ten minutes to go, striking low into the bottom corner from 20 yards after Andreas Pereira's lay off.

However, Southampton would give United a taste of their own medicine, as the home side regained the lead straight from kick-off. McQueen's run and pass out to Seager found the Saints striker through on goal, and he clipped the ball over Gollini to restore their lead after just 50 seconds of parity.

The home side sealed the win in stoppage time as subsitute Sam Gallagher skipped through United's defence after being played in by Seager, ran past Gollini, and slid the ball past the helpless Pearson on the line.

United: Gollini, Love, Evans (Fletcher, 82), Grimshaw, McNair, Pearson, Weir, Daehli, Barmby, Pereira, Harrop (Byrne, 55).
