U18s: Reading vs. United

I wonder why we can never have a single youngster who doesn't look like a midget :)

Who's this co commentator? Is he the same one from last night? And if so, who is he?

Pereira getting into the game more and more.

Interesting point about Lingard and Cole by the commentators.

It's Les Kershaw, right ?

Really insightful.

What point did he make I didn't really listen.

Shit refereeing there, should have played on.

Reading have a huge height and physical advantage over us. We've been lucky all their set piece deliveries have been shit.

That physical late bloomers might benefit from being kept back in a lower age bracket. However, the new rules allow for no such thing, other than when it comes to keepers.

The 2 strikers don't link up with each other at all.

Reading on top. Been lucky not be behind here.

Probably should take off one of the 2 strikers and bring on Weir.

Can't say it wasn't coming.

Set piece as expected too.

Ah well.

Unlike the U21 defeat yesterday, Reading were just bigger, faster and stronger than us.

Athletic advantage they had proved the difference.

I do wonder why nearly every match i see our players get manhandled constantly and its play on yet a little touch by a united player its a freekick. The woves game was clasic for that where Januzaj was given a few freekicks in early minutes but from then he got nothing - very strange.

U18s: Reading 1 United 0

Manchester United's Under-18s slipped to a first away defeat since mid-February when hosts Reading scored the only goal of a closely-fought game.

The Reds never really got going, playing in changeable conditions against a big and strong side still blessed with enough skill to secure all the points. The Royals certainly had much the better of the early stages of the first half, twice hitting the crossbar. Firstly, Craig Tanner's curling free-kick bounced off the frame of the goal, before Jonny Sutherland turned Jake Cooper's effort onto the woodwork. Sutherland was also called into action soon after, denying Uche Ikpeazu with a brave save down at the Reading forward's feet.

As the first half went on, the Reds came back into the game, with Ben Pearson's fine shot being pushed away by Royals keeper Dan Lincoln and Sam Byrne also going close with a long-range effort. James Wilson was unable to convert United's best opening of the match when put through one-on-one by Andreas Pereira, with Lincoln making a fine diving save.

Both sides had opportunities to score at the start of the second half, as Pereira saw a long range effort deflect over, whilst Sheridan Murombedzi spurned a fantastic opportunity when he fired over from eight yards.

The hosts finally broke the deadlock just after the hour mark, as defender Dominic Hyam escaped the attentions of Patrick McNair to fire home Tanner's right-wing corner from close range. Tanner's setpieces continued to cause problems, and he was only denied the game's second goal by the fingertips of Sutherland, the Reds' outstanding performer.

United continued to push for an equaliser though, with Pereira inevitably involved. The Belgium-born midfielder was unlucky to not level twice in quick succession, before his drilled free-kick looped up and over the bar via a deflection.

As conditions quickly worsened, the hosts were unlucky not to double their lead in stoppage time, but again Sutherland was on hand to deny De’Jaune Taylor-Crossdale with a magnificent save at his near post. However, the Royals had done enough to claim all three points and an eighth win in succession.

United Under-18s' final game of the regular season is away to Fulham on Tuesday night, kicking off at 19:00 at Motspur Park. You can see all the highlights on MUTV at 20:30 on the following evening, Wednesday.

United: Sutherland; Love, McNair, Ioannou (Barmby, 84), Evans; Pereira, Grimshaw, Pearson, Daehli; Byrne, Wilson (Weir, 74). Subs not used: O'Hara, Rudge, Rowley.

Well it looks as if we've blown our chance of making the semis which is a shame. The lads never played like it was a must win game though. They looked as if their not arsed and lacked the intensity.

Disappointing performance from us regardless of the result. Yes Reading were bigger and stronger but that doesn't excuse the poor passing or lack of quality.

Pearson put himself about well again but his use of the ball seems to have really diminished in these last few weeks. He seems to struggle to control the midfield like he used to and stamp his personality on games like he was doing earlier in the season. Maybe its because his cm partner today was Grimshaw, a defender played out of position who lacks technically. It might be good for Grimshaw's development (which is understandable) but our team and style of play suffered from it. We just had no creative control of the game.

Daehli's close control is great but he's lacking cutting edge in the final third at the moment. He doesn't score or create as many goals as he should imo. This must be the reason we never get to see him play centrally behind the forward either and sometimes I wonder if he would effect games more from there.

Perreira is a huge talent and the only one who looked like having the quality to create a goal. He's the biggest talent at the club for me, even better than Januzaj imo. Lets just pray his development goes smoothly.

I'm not as big a fan of Wilson as some but he is still young and has plenty of time to improve. Jack Barmby was impressive last year but hasn't really kicked on this year like I thought he might which is disappointing.

Apart from maybe Sutherland I don't really see any big potential in any of the others who played today imo. Lots of good attitudes like Grimshaw, Love and Mcnair for example, but not a great deal of quality if i'm honest. Not a single defender stands out as having top potential either and the distribution from the back by us is really poor.

Also again, its strange to me how the season is nearly over yet none of these second years have played more than half-an-hour for under21s. Its not as if we've had a youth cup run to keep them fresh for.

Ioannau has very good potential. Has been hampered by injuries this season though.

And Perreira played CM with Pearson.

Grimshaw is a midfielder who has been playing in defence because we have no other options. McNair the same. While not necessarily 'creative' as you say...he plays a defensive midfield role well in my opinion.

With so many U/21 players not able to play in the 18's because they are too old...seems reasonable that they will get preference over youth players.

Van Velzen, McCullough, Cofie, Hendrie, Lawrence etc all need games.
