U18s: Bolton vs. United

When did he stop playing well? Pearson's one of my favourites in the academy, he's not the most glamorous player but he's brilliant at what he does.

Hasn't had a single poor game all season.

Looked a straight pen to me. At least the assistant did the ref's job for him and spotted the foul for the goal.

I meant he's playing well yet again, as in he always does. His consistency is superb.

1-2 Weir. Brilliant volley after a great Rowley cross.

Super free kick.

This Clough seems a good talent.

Super goal but stupid to give away a counter in the 87 minute..

What shit defending from Bolton though.

First let Barmby juggle about then give Wilson all space and time in the world.

Missed the whole thing due to work  anyone care to give me a summary?

U18s: Bolton 2 United 3

United's youngsters triumphed in the opening game of the Elite phase of the Barclays Under-18 Premier League with James Wilson grabbing an injury-time winner.

Zach Clough scored twice for Bolton, the second with three minutes left, with Jack Barmby and James Weir on the scoresheet for the Reds before Wilson popped up with a dramatic strike.

The hosts made the brighter start in freezing conditions but Weir came close to an opening goal. The England Under-19 midfielder played a one-two with Wilson and stormed through, only roll his finish agonisingly wide of the far post.

Instead, Wanderers drew first blood on 16 minutes when Nicholas Ioannou was dispossessed and a fast breakaway raid allowed Clough and Tom Youngs to show off their understanding in attack. Youngs returned the ball to his strike partner, rather than shoot himself, with a glorious pass and Clough finished neatly past Jonny Sutherland.

The Reds battled back, with Wilson going close, and deservedly drew level courtesy of a cracker from Barmby. A quickly-taken free-kick, after Ben Pearson was fouled, led to Barmby blasting a dipping drive into the net from outside the box.

Mats Daehli became a growing influence on proceedings in midfield and Weir almost converted one dangerous cross at the start of the second half but there were not too many clear-cut openings until a manic minute with action at both ends. Daehli was denied a penalty shout after tumbling inside the area and Bolton broke with Youngs having his strike ruled out for a push on Donald Love, only given by referee's assistant and not the man in the middle.

After Wilson fired over the top, United went in front courtesy of a superb team goal with Daehli picking out the overlapping Louis Rowley and his deep cross was rammed home on the volley by the energetic Weir. In the closing stages, Bolton hit back when Clough executed a perfect free-kick past Sutherland's despairing dive to level matters.

However, there was still time for more drama as Paul McGuinness' side showed the character that United are famed for. Barmby juggled a Donald Love cross before helping the ball on to Wilson, who kept his composure to drill in his 13th goal of the season.

United: Sutherland; Love, Ioannou, Grimshaw, Rowley; Weir, Rudge, Pearson, Daehli; Barmby, Wilson. Subs not used: Byrne, O'Hara, Rothwell, Gorre, Evans.

Just read he scored a good free kick. How's his general play?Is he an out and out left winger? Does he have the pace./tricks etc?

His general play is very good. He's quite stocky. He's got decent pace but not blistering. Can be quite inventive - has tricks. He's a winger but he is quite single minded at times. However, he's capable of quality like his assist and goal today.

The goal was a peach but the composure for the assist, the ability to manipulate the ball and find a pass at the end of it was very good.

Excellent I thought. Not particularly rapid but very very clever. Tricks and flicks and his composure is a big asset. He is very well built to be fair and you'll struggle muscling him off the ball at his level. His delivery from dead balls is massively impressive for me and his goal today sublime.

The composure he showed to set up Wilson was good and he always looks likely to cause problems. I am a big fan.

Thanks all.Would you say he's far away from a 1st team appearance or would a loan benefit?

Oh, that's a nice surprise. I had to leave just before the end of the match, when it was 2-2, feeling a bit gutted. Just got back. Good to see the United DNA is already showing through.

Good start to the 'elite' matches. Not the best I've seen them play but certainly deserving of a win, and there's plenty there to build on.
