Jesus thank God he got rid of that stupid hair
Great goal btw.

Edit: this seems to have ruffled some feathers, I didn't mean anything too harsh by it, it doesn't really suit him to be honest.

I'm totally with you in regards your opinion on the hair. Ever since beckham got carried away and fergie used to put him in line I think there's a tendancy for for footballers to be too 'into' their hair that coincides with shit performances. A-la maguire and lindelof always at their hair, rashfords poodle, pogbas endless styles and lingards shit attempts. Harry Redknapp famously told bale to stop messing with your Barnet and overnight he became the superstar we all knew at spurs.

correct, Shaw has ability but unfortunately through temperament or physique his body will last half a season if were lucky. The other point is shaw appears to be better in a team set up to defend as is the case with Southgate's england where his errors and decision making is less exposed. I am also from a camp where international form is irrelevant in my decision making process on a player.

Then why was his best season 20/21, when United was hardly a team set up to defend?

He's been here for almost a decade and has had one good season. You don't need to be Sherlock Holmes to figure that one out chief.

I find it even stranger that people can't figure out why fans are sick off him. Standards in the bin!

Gee, you're one to talk about short memories. He hasn't had "some good games". He was arguably the best left back in the PL in 20/21, and also in the Euro tournament that summer. Which is not a long time ago. Maybe he can get back to that form, maybe he can't. But in any case, you're coming across as fairly ignorant when you keep talking as if he's had a handful of good games and it required a leap of imagination to think he could be a key player on this United team. He was exactly that, for a whole season, and not long ago.
A keyplayer for a United team, that didn't really achieve much though... A player can also be the best in the league without being extremely good. Thats the beauty of relatity. It was United media mostly who boosted Shaws profile that year, he had a very good season, not going to take anything away from him (especially, as there isn't a lot to take away from), but it wasn't like the whole world was trying to sign him or anything like that. I guess, that is what the user meant - he was good, even a key player for United back then but nothing other clubs really paid much attention to. And seeing him collapse a mere one year later should remind us, that this (glorious) season might have been just a purple patch.

Good to see an addition in that spot of squad, there is absolutely no reason, he should feel any form of security about his spot in the team.

Completely agree with that final line.

Ten Hag wants a whole squad of Dutch Players or what ?

This will be another Buttner.
Don't get me wrong. He's very talented. I just don't see him succeed at United.

Shaw and Telles had made sure that the bar is set very low so I can see Malacia succeed with us.

I've no idea if United media tried to boost Shaw's profile in 20/21, because I never bother reading or watching it. In the things I do read and watch, there was a pretty clear sense of consensus that he had a great season, which he did. Don't see that it means anything that other clubs didn't try to sign him - that is after all generally the case with players who do well at big clubs, aren't on an expiring contract and doesn't particularly want to leave. How many clubs have tried to sign Andrew Robertson or Reece James?

Also, let me remind you that what we're discussing isn't a claim that Luke Shaw is a proven world class LB, but rather a claim that he hasn't actually shown anything for us except a handful of good games mostly as LCB.

What's that quote? form is temporary, being a fat, lazy, disruptive waste of space is permanent ....... something like that :)
Shaw can hardly complain about being played out of position, or asked to close down, when no matter what system he is that is effectively going to be his job, was a problem for Mou, Ole and Ralph, last time he was consistently good for Utd was when he was playing in a triangle with Martial and Fellani, man but mentioning that trio makes me cringe

Haven't seen much of him. Looks good per the YouTube compilation video (which everyone does). For the fee quoted, I think this is a good transfer. If ETH feels he needs a LB then I'm glad that the board has backed him. I hope we do have plans for our right side (wing and RB) as well because it looks very weak at the moment.

Thanks!

His crosses are okay. Not special or anything. His passing is better because he has a good vision, what makes his through balls really good.

Also he is dribbling-wise pretty awesome. He has very short turns with the ball, what gives him the ability to get rid of his opponent fairly easy.
For example. Malacia completed 50 dribbles last Eredivisie season. More than any other defender in the league.

He was a great duo with left winger Luis Sinisterra. He looks a lot for the 1-2 combination to launch himself forward and going for a cross or shot.

He mainly played as LB at Feyenoord, but also plays as LWB at the national team. He never played RB (i think)
Thanks.

Really weird how the public opinion of Shaw is so low amongst United fans. He's had issues with fitness, but when he is able to play consistently he is a fantastic LB. I'm pleased with this signing because he needs better competition than Telles, but I also really hope that Shaw is at his best this season because he's a huge asset for the team.
I don’t know how much in percentage the fans here have that weird opinion of Shaw. I guess no more than 40%, but they probably make the most loud voices I guess.
It’s superb weird.

He looks fat and exudes laziness, is constantly injured and has had only one United worthy season which was the previous year.
No surprise the opinion of the fan base is in the gutter.
Nit that I necessarily agree with that, just the way it is.

There definitely are merits to the old school style of doing it and creating a military aura in the locker room altogether in the end it i can see why it may not particularly work within the current mindset of modern footballers.
Still it's probably better to exert some amount of control in younger players lives before they find a footing so they don't stray away too far.

Still I couldn't give less of a rats ass on what a player does to their hair if they keep producing greatness on the pitch(Marcelo is a good example perhaps? Although I think I've only seen him with 2 different models. ).

It shouldn't be the point of focus as long as they've got their playing career in order.

Thanks for putting that together, very informative.

Yeah fair enough, you are right, it can be difficult not to gravitate too much to one of the extreme sides of the spectrum. He certainly has more than a handful of good games for us (loved him as a player when he joined, so much energy...).

My issue with him is mostly, that I don't get the feeling, that he is really pushing himself. He is seemingly fine with being "not the worst in team" instead of pushing others, he has technical ability but he doesn't really leave his comfort zone making even better use of it. And his attacking is too reluctant in my eyes, I often have the feeling with him, that he intentionally stays a little too far behind a certain line or a player only to be able to make a solid claim for "I had to pass back, there was no chance".
Lots of it might be down to instructions, sure, but I don't know, along the way he outlived my hopes and if I don't think, that a player is the future, then my priority is to bring in a player with the potential to be that future.

Hopefully Malacia adapts quickly to the league. And, for his sake, I hope there are a few more additions recruitment-wise, so the focus won't be that huge on the individual newcomers.

Fair point I can see the logic...never really held Edgar Davids or batigol back in the past to be fair

Luke Shaw is neither fat nor lazy, do you have any evidence for him being a “disruptive waste of space”?

Also ignoring the year he was the best player in his position in the world really doesn’t help you make any kind of point.

Big fan of his ever since checking the transfer thread a few minutes ago. Seems like he’s got it all. Got a good feeling about this one. Get in!

Another Buttner:wenger:

Everyone was baffled in Holland when Büttner went to United because he clearly was not on that level. Büttner came from Vitesse as well which is a big difference. Usually players go to a top 3 club first (Ajax, PSV, Feyenoord) before they go to a top team abroad.

Malacia is on a different level. He's our 1st (sometimes 2nd) choice in the NT. Büttner wasn't. Worst case scenario Malacia is another AWB. For this kind of money it's a good deal though.

Malacia has the right mentality to succeed. Very solid player and the best wing back I've seen for a long long time at Feyenoord.

We could have survived another season with Shaw/Telles considering there are bigger needs in midfield and attack. So maybe he's deemed a can't miss prospect by ETH and scouting dep. From the very little I've seen of him, he looks really composed and clever for such a young player. Good athlete as well. I hope he succeed.

Will he be first choice? Might be to soon for him but I’m hoping he can break straight into the starting 11. Won’t have much competition to be honest, 1 fbs always injured and the others positioning is awful.

Shaw is still good when he’s fit so I don’t think he’ll start straight away. But he’ll have his chance when his body inevitably breaks down.

Then it’s his job the rest of the way.

I'm so happy reading these takes from people who actually watch the player every week. I remember reading posters advising caution about a whole bunch of our recent signings (VdB, AWB, Maguire etc.) and not taking them seriously only to find they were right.

Depends on how he plays obviously, if he plays better than Shaw then he will start more games

Like this type of signing, fairly low cost, young and clearly well thought of in his homeland. Hope he comes in and we move Telles on. Not a priority area but if he turns out to be top class it won't matter as far as I'm concerned. Right who's next...?

Malacia looks very good from what I've seen, but in a very different way and different time so did Buttner. Telles should also have been a hit. Hard to tell till the physical test occurs, but I also think our midfield is making everyone worse. Well timed and judged passes and proper movement of the team in unison can really make full backs thrive.

Maguire is another problem. Not pushing up exposes further wingbacks who do push forward.

Could get 2.5 Malacia's per City full back so I'm going to call it what it is....Dan James at LB.

City spending £50m on every fullback under the sun doesn't make Malacia a Dan James signing. Buttner never, ever looked good.

- It's hard to turn down the opportunity to sign a player of this quality at that price. We couldn't wait a year for him, he was on the way to Lyon.
- Shaw needs a kick up the bum.
- I never want to see Telles in a United shirt again.

So overall, I'm very pleased with this transfer, even if I would have preferred a RB instead.

Opps you caught that part. It was left over from what was intended as a tongue in cheek joke.

Well scouted signings shouldn't need £50m spend, but badly scouted and assessed does end up with Dan James level signings.
