Still not sold on him, very proactive and decent performance but I think it’s a case of a shiny new toy. Don’t think he’s anywhere near Shaw’s level
Yeah, good. Shaw's level is the bottom of the barrel. What's with the shiny new toy nonsense?

A new player playing against the team which scored 9 goals last season against United. Under pressure at home where the fans are disappointed and produces a great performance.

He's not a shiny new toy. He showed what can be done if you put in the required effort. He is still learning and will have bad days but the effort and attitude will be there.

When he slid in on Salah, missed the ball but was still quick enough to get up and win it was immense.

He's a firework at left back. Can see him quickly becoming a cult hero.

It was a very good performance and he should be considered our first choice LB now. But I think if we're honest, Salah wasn't at it last night, and I don't think that was just a case of Malacia making him look bad. Malacia made two of three good recovery tackles but a sharper Salah wouldn't have given him the opportunity. Obviously though, Salah, even on an off-night, would still rinse plenty of fullbacks!

Didn't get much of a chance to show what he can do in an attacking sense, but I remember him playing some really excellent passes in pre-season, hopefully we'll see some of that in the upcoming fixtures.

So far we’ve really only seen his defensive qualities at United (and like what we see!) What was he like going forwards at Feyenoord?

His crossing was hit and miss, but his passing game is good. He's comfortable on the ball, doesn't lose it much and is just technically sound. Knows how to use his body to protect the ball.

I've seen comparisons with Patrice Evra, but he needs to improve on the offensive end to be compared to him. Instead of sprinting/dribbling down the line and cross, he likes to go inside more and play short passes to the CAM or winger. He's good at that, but can't stress enough he has to work on his crossing as that would make him more of a complete wing back.

Personally don’t think his performance was as great as others do. Defended quite well, offered nothing going the other way. He did well, but it wasn’t a special performance.

I’d like to see him continue though, as while Shaw has more quality I feel, you just never know what you will get with him as he hasn’t been at his very best for a long time. Also defends too timidly.

I expect Malacia to show more of his offensive game as he finds his feet.

He gave plenty of options but was ignored most of the time.

To be fair being a little more defensive against Salah isn't exactly a bad thing anyway. They weren't scoring down the centre of the pitch.

Is that performance enough to make him first choice LB? Shaw has been average for quite some time now.

The difference between Malacia and Shaw is like night and day.

The way he can get out of trouble in tight spaces with smart passing and movement is very impressive. He's a top player in the making.

I think it's important to note that Liverpools right hand side is probably the most potent in the league.

TAA and Salah are some of the best in their position, so the defensive aspect is what we needed to see from him, and we did. I suspect he didn't have licence to bomb forward due to the danger on his side.

Great performance from him, very intense and although he made a couple of mistakes, he recovered well. Very happy

Evras crossing was pretty garbage his whole time here. That was always his biggest criticism. I think it's a very appropriate comparison though. He plays with intensity, and on the ball he is very assured and doesn't lose it. He seems calm under pressure and there were a couple of pieces of play where him and Martinez were under pressure but calmly played it between them until they found an open man. Love what I see so far.

Little point comparing him to Evra because football has moved on massively in terms of the full back position whereby attacking is now their main function in most games. AWB would have been a top full back in Evra’s day but not today.

So let me get this straight: he makes his debut against the best right winger in the league, and puts in that performance?

absolute warrior. What a statement to make about being a starter. The future looks bright for this lad, and for the fee too this could be one of the best investments we make.

Played well enough to nail down his place in the next game, is all you can ask of him and ultimately more than Shaw has done since the Euros.

It was also their biggest weakness, with all our offensive work coming from that side and Trent being run ragged by Elanga no less.

That said, I have no issue with his lack of offensive contribution last night, simply noting it in the context of it being looked at as an amazing performance. I’m sure there is plenty more to come from him on that front, and think he will be quality. At the very least, he is technically competent, so even if he doesn’t turn into an excellent offensive full back - he can still be a good player if his defending is good so long as his technical basics are good.

That's alright, Shaw has been here for almost 8 years and is still a shit crosser. Malacia seems well suited for that inverted fullback role though from what I've seen. Good passing and intelligence, and can actually use his right foot as well which is nice.

Personally I think you're being a bit harsh. He was fantastic and actually was involved in the build up for the first goal.

It doesn't have to be a prime Roberto Carlos game to be labelled "amazing" in my opinion. But yes, I agree that we need to see a larger sample size before we get too excited

You know of quality when you see it. This wasn't a fluke performance.

You can criticise new players but that condescending tone is unnecessary.

AWB can't read a ball in the air to save his life, he was found out and it started causing huge problems as teams put in crosses for his winger from the other side of the pitch. He didn't even have the good sense to just move towards his man and put a body on him. He'd have been worse back when players focus more on their heading skill, I'd think.

Massively disagree. Ironically your post mentions Evra who was excellent on the ball and going forward in general. Aside from that, AWB really isn’t that good defensively. He’s fast and times his tackles well, but other than that he’s left wanting aerially and with his positioning.

I am a United/Ajax fan but this guy was my favourite non Ajax player. So much energy and enthusiasm and skill. I was hoping we would go for him instead of Wijndal.
Reminds so much of a young Evra

Worked his way into the 1st team, now has to stay fit and work to be the best LB in the world.
Can improve his crossing, but the application is spot-on so far.

I thought he was Motm. Such energy.
He got my vote, but I've been raving about Shaw's jogging for years now and I'm so sick of him that seeing a proper performance is like food to a starving man.

Shaw looks fine backing off a mediocre winger on a national squad where play is slower and teams aren't as good for many reasons. Yes he can put in a nice cross, sometimes. But that energetic wing back that was our best player under Van Gaal is long gone.

Impressive performance. Making a full home debut in a packed OT against Liverpool is never easy, a lot of young players crumble under pressure but he did really well.

It’s good to see the new young lad taking another first teamers place. That’s him kicking Shaw out, martinez staying at the back and Varane kicking Maguire out. Casemiro to replace mctominay and then we have 1 hell of a team. Could do with more depth upfront and an upgrade at rb.

Full backs and defenders -- you can't really judge them until a season imo. He was exceptionally good yesterday but what separates the average ones from the good ones is mistakes. Then again, his competition is trash so he has the time.

This guy is going to become a fan favourite if he plays like he did last night.

Been a long time supporter of Shaw and honestly didn’t think Williams or Telles would be a threat to his position but I think now there is a proper contender. Obviously want to see more but keep performing like he did last night and Shaw is going to struggle.

Forgot Salah was even on the pitch until he popped up with that goal.

He misplaced the tackle, and somehow got up and catched the ball again before Arnold even though he was in line with Arnold when he was on the ground two seconds before. That was ridiculous piece of determination.

Shaw would probably give up 20 meters before and made a yellow card tackle beacuse he couldn't be bothered tracking back.

That's the crap I hate. Any time any of our players have a good game it's because the other team where just rubbish not because our players were actually good that game and nullified their threats well.
