Arsene Wenger has told Manchester United they paid too much for Rio Ferdinand.
The Old Trafford club set a new British transfer record when they splashed out £30million on the England World Cup star.
United now have the three most expensive players in Britain along with Juan Sebastian Veron (£28m) and Ruud van Nistelrooy (£19m), but Wenger is adamant they have overpaid on Ferdinand.
He told The Standard: "They've bought a great player but they've paid a high price for him. I'd like to sign Rio Ferdinand but for £10m less.
"I'm not surprised that United have the three most expensive players in Britain. It reflects their financial strength. When you have a lot of money in your pocket you buy expensive. That's what they've done.
While Ferguson has spent £30million and Gerard Houllier at Liverpool has spent £19million in the close-season, Wenger has added only Pascal Cygan to his Double-winning squad.
But he is happy that last season's squad are good enough to defend their Premiership title despite a lack of reinforcements.
He said: "I think we can make a better job of defending it this time. I don't think the team we have now has reached its full potential."
