Txiki Begiristain

Fernandinho and De Bruyne were very good signings. Nolito too.

Gundogan in theory was worth the money if can keep him fit.

To be fair, I'd expect Caballero and Demechelis to be specific players requested by Pellegrini having managed both at Malaga, and in Demechelis case, also at River Plate.

Almost £90m for Stones and Mangala... Jesus.

I think Stones could be the most overrated player in years, he's had 1 decent season that's been followed up by 2 terrible ones, they bought him at the wrong time thats for sure.

Didn't it come out that Woodward had been in contact with Pogba practically from the day he got the job?
Think it did. But then Mourinho wanted Pogba at Chelsea so everyone's happy with that.

This guy is poisonous to City and they have arguably gone backwards since their obsession with Barca/Pep began.

They seem to have this mission objective where they are destined to be the next Barcelona in the space of about 5 years and I find the whole thing utterly ridiculous and laughable. You have people shocked at their slump this season on the pitch and to be honest it was so so predictable if you took your Pep glasses off.

To me it stems from the top, Tixi is obsessed with this idea that if you get Pep, throw cash at the academy and buy some over-hyped players youll suddenly become this european force and its pretty funny as an outsider, I fully believe they will go absolutely nuts to get in Messi, and I think they have a chance of getting him but I think it will be in his twilight years and I think they will spend so much money on him they wont have anything left to actually bolster their weak spots.

I mean John Stones hahahahahhahaha Otamendi and some of the other players listed here, its incredible really.

For a comparison- we had problems in Midfield last season, no creativity and lack of goal chances created, what do we do? We go all out for one of the most promising midfielders in the world in Pogba and the Bundesliga player of the year with top assists in Mihiki.

City spent a shit tonne of cash on an over-rated CB who had already started to show signs of over-playing at Everton when what they really needed was two fresh full backs and a commanding leader at the back.

Priceless.

Yes I hate City and enjoy pissing on their cornflakes.

Never liked the idea of a director of football. and I doubt I ever will

Manager should have full control within a budget

You know about Monchi? Started in 2nd division with a bankrupt Sevilla and with his signings turned them into the EL powerhouse they're now.

Compared to him, Txiki "plays" director of football, one has developed a scouting network with his own methods in two continents, the other gets to sit down and negotiate with players that 99% of the teams would sign if they had the money

Pointless to be praising or criticizing someone individually when we don't even know the kind of decision making powers he has. For all you know, his job could be taking the name from the manager and writing emails to clubs.

Have City as a whole messed up their transfer business over that period of time. Yes, definitely. Is it all this guy's fault and bad judgement or bad negotiation skills? There is no way to tell really.
agreed

He just seemed to be in right place at the right time when at Barca as DOF.

Messi, Xavi and Iniesta were all on Barca books before he took up the position.

What I dont get is surely the long-term plan was always to get Pep in hence bringing him in and others to facilitate Peps arrival. So they surely had a strategy to build towards a team slowly that Pep could take over and then add a few signings to. Isnt that the true purpose of DoF, have a strategy, and bring the players which a manager can use / coach as you want to play a certain way.

Also, although hes on loan, that figure should be higher due to Gabriel Jesus, right?

Loads of comments on the Pep thread about how the squad is not top quality.

Will this affect Txiki's position, given that appointing Pep and getting a squad ready for him was his primary job right from the start of his tenure?.

Also, people calling for a DOF at United, this clearly shows that its a difficult model to replicate and find the right profile of players/managers.

Yeah, I'll admit I was one that said I'd like to see Man Utd with a DOF, but of course it's not that easy.

The whole point of a DOF is finding someone who has the same vision as the club, or a vision the club believes in. Like say RB Leipzig and Ralf Rangnick. In Cities case though, it was pretty much "we want Pep, so lets get his mate in", when he was shifted from Barca for not being good enough, presumably at getting the club set up in Barca/Pep's vision. It makes no sense.

If you jiggle the letters in his name about and add a generous dollop of poetic license , his name is an anagram of Tricky Bogstain.

Leaves having been part of the greatest cheating the premier league has ever seen. Quite a legacy

Few conclusions from this. Pep is very likely to leave. City may well just be about to say adios to top level football.

Hugo Viana lined up to replace him. Imagine then Amorim will be happy to go if Pep also jumps

I would say this is probably the first real indicator that something serious might actually happen to city

"Planned a long time ago" aka when the 115 charges were announced publicly.

He must be so proud, the slimy little git.

Imagine them all, pep included, sitting around in twenty years reminiscing about their great era, pretending that the world didn't know they cheated

We should do what it takes to get him here when he is ready to return to the role. He always wanted the great players and talents, while we fecked around with Fellaini, Schneiderlin, van de Beek etc. He is the kind of guy that signs players that the fans dream of, and obviously will be good.

Not that I particularly like him, but if it means signing actual good players and taking us to the top, I'd be all for it.

Old comments are pretty funny looking back now.

Hopefully this means Pep fecks off soon, looking likely with the rumours floating about.

Like a bunch of ostriches with their heads in the sand. "If we can't see it, it didn't happen".

There’s no way Pep hangs around without his right hand man.. this is the beginning of the end for this era of football… thank god

He played the game with cheats on, so I won’t go overboard with praise, but still, their squad management has been good under him and it may well be that the only way is down. Pep never felt like a manager that was all that arsed about recruitment, as long as he got a steady stream of talent and was allowed to ditch players straight away if he didn’t like them. So I think Begiristain was very much in charge of that side of things and will probably be a loss to them.

Recent signings haven't been great, poor even. Man has lost his touch. Happens to everyone. Farewell Txiki.
