Wow and I thought Commolli was inept and living off hype.

I could go on for hours about how much I dislike him but it's late. I'll air my grievances tomorrow.

To think everyone was going mad when City got him too. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Director of Football is a waste of time and pointless role.

Wow, that's laughable. Which is probably why I'm laughing.

Who knows who would fit better into the team and tactics better than the manager?

Needless role.

Did Bony really cost that much?

Don't think it's pointless at all. You can't plan long term with managers anymore, so you need a clear strategy as a club otherwise you have to restructure your squad every time a new manager comes in.

Completely forgot that Delph plays for them. Gone completely invisible since he went there.

And every new manager has different philosophies and tactics. Having somebody else doing your buying is already setting you up to fail.

I don't think there should be pessimism about managers longevity either. You pick the right guy and he should succeed. Especially at big clubs at City.

Stones, Gundogan, De Bryune Sterling were all worth.

Gundogan (injury aside) and De Bruyne definitely worth it.

Yet to see about the other 2 but the small sample we've seen from Stones would be an emphatic no and only seen glimpses from Sterling.

His record at Barca in terms of transfers was hit and miss too.

I don't think a manager should dictate a clubs strategy on the transfer market. He obviously gets to be part of the process of identifying the right players, but I don't think that it should only be up to him.
But I guess that has something to do with me being German and kind of growing up with that structure.

On the topic of City: Pep will succeed but he won't stay for more than 3 years imo

Never liked the idea of a director of football. and I doubt I ever will

Manager should have full control within a budget

to be fair our purchases over the same period have been as bad.

True

But it least that is down to the man in charge. A manger should live and die by his own decisions.

I dont think all have been our managers choices, I think woodward has a big say, especially the "marquee" signings. Even if they are only marquee because of the price we pay.
He has to find us noodle partners and keep them happy by us being in the spotlight.

Gotta say this, Jose's transfer business this summer has been short and straight to the point. Very impressive when you look at others in hindsight. Even Conte did well at Chelsea.

Find that hard to believe

I don't think Woodward has bought any player the manager doesn't want. Falcao maybe but most others were manager's choices

each to their own fella
Who are these Galactico signings you think Woodward picked himself and brought in to do sponsorship deals? To me they all seem like they have been picked by the manager.

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has name dropped Real Madrid winger Angel di Maria as speculation surrounding the Argentine continues to grow.

Paris Saint-Germain had been the favourites to sign Di Maria this summer, but recently pulled out of the race due to costs.

United have since been linked with a £55m move and Van Gaal has added fuel to the fire by lavishing praise on the midfielder.

"We don't have wingers of the highest level, like [Cristiano] Ronaldo or Di Maria or somebody like that. So, I have to play in another way – and you have seen that already. I only buy when I think we need to buy – in the position that is necessary," he told reporters.

United are expected to make signings before next weekend's Premier League opener against Swansea City.
Jose Mourinho tried to sign Paul Pogba for Chelsea in 2015, the player's agent Mino Raiola has revealed.

France star Pogba signed for Mourinho at Manchester United in a world-record £89m deal this summer and Raiola believes United's gain is every other top club's loss.

Real Madrid also wanted Pogba but were soon priced out of the move along with "five or six other clubs" according to Pogba's representative.

Raiola said: "Mourinho already wanted to bring him to Chelsea last summer, but it was not the right time.

"Zidane wanted him at Real Madrid, but five or six other clubs were after him too. Manchester United now are stronger thanks to Pogba, but Real Madrid are not."

Those are our two biggest signings I think...there's nothing to suggest it was Woodward picking them

As I say fella each to there own, the ones I was thinking of were Mata, Di Maria and Falcao.
Dont really believe most of what managers/agents say, because you can tell when they are lying, its when noise is coming out of the holes in their heads

Didn't it come out that Woodward had been in contact with Pogba practically from the day he got the job?

Bravo - £17m- Struggling to adapt to the premier league, makes the Hart decision look ridiculous now.

Caballero -£6m- has his flaws but to be honest he is a pretty solid backup.

Demechelis - £3.5m- shrewd business given all the money they have spent on centre backs

Mangala - £40m- is this the correct figure? City fans claim it's not. Had decent potential but never looked convincing.

Otamendi - £32m- Excellent signing. Solid and is capable of playing out of the back.

Stones - £47.50m- I am torn with this one. He has a lot potential and could be at the heart of their defence for 10+ years. Although he's having an awful time at the moment.

Sagna - Solid premier league player. Can't fault this one.

Fernando - £12m- solid but nothing spectacular. I suppose he is a decent option to have if fernandinho was to get injured.

Fernandinho - £30m- Excellent signing, honestly never heard of him before City got him. But I believe he is one of the best midfielders in the league.

Delph - £8m- I mean 8m is nothing to them. But it has been a poor signing. Injury prone and not of the required standard.

Gundogan - £20m- great signing. Surprised Dortmund allowed him to go cheaply. He has been a bit inconsistent but I'm sure once he has fully adapted to City , he will be great.

Navas - £23m- solid multifunctional player but nothing spectacular.

Sterling - £44m- Good signing. Bags of potential and has looked really good under Pep so far.

Sane - £37m- I feel for the lad. He has the hype surrounding him however he's not been helped out by being played out of position.

Nolito - £14m- solid signing. Really good price but I don't feel he will ever be good enough to hold down a starting spot.

Roberts - £11m- to early to judge but looked good playing against city, ironically.

De Bruyne - £55m- The best signing they have made since Tixi was appointed. I wonder if they had told KDB that Pep wanted them to sign him.

Jovetic - £26m- Poor. Had potential but injuries and inconsistencies prevented any momentum.

Negredo - £21m- he looked like a bargain for the first half of the season in 2013/2014 (IIRC). Not really sure what went wrong for him.

Bony - £28m-was never good enough to play for them. But my word they paid over the odds for him

£464m

In what world is the Otamendi deal 'excellent'?

Mangala - £40m- is this the correct figure? City fans claim it's not. Had decent potential but never looked convincing.
Well it seems to be £42m so not quite correct

Eliaquim Mangala has admitted he has been too inconsistent since his record £42m transfer to Manchester City, with the central defender confessing English football has taken him by surprise.
https://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/feb/09/manchester-city-eliaquim-mangala-inconsistency
Pep Guardiola hopes to sign four or five players for Manchester City this summer but is expected to sell Eliaquim Mangala, the defender who has failed to live up to expectations after his £42 million move to the Etihad Stadium.

Manchester City paid a British record fee for a defender of close to £42m for Eliaquim Mangala, a leaked document has confirmed. City originally claimed the deal was worth £32m - but admitted later the cost had spiralled due to the player's complicated ownership agreement.

According to the document, which appeared online on Wednesday, Porto only owned 56.67 percent of Mangala's economic rights. The remainder was split between The Doyen Sports Investment Limited, who owned 33.33 percent, with another 10 percent belonging to an Austrian marketing company.

City had to pay close to £24m for Porto's share alone, meaning the remainder of the deal took the total to £41.4m.

Was he the one who green lit the Eto'o PLUS 50M Euros for Ibra back in 2009?... if so then he's a proper boob.
Txiki was still director of football at Barcelona when that Eto'o to Inter Milan, Ibrahimovic to Barcelona deal happened.

Pointless to be praising or criticizing someone individually when we don't even know the kind of decision making powers he has. For all you know, his job could be taking the name from the manager and writing emails to clubs.

Have City as a whole messed up their transfer business over that period of time. Yes, definitely. Is it all this guy's fault and bad judgement or bad negotiation skills? There is no way to tell really.

I remember when people were shitting themselves because City got a DoF from "Barca"
