Two seasons in, how do you rate the Varane signing?

Rolls Royce of a footballer when he's fit. But he's never fit.

First season was decent enough but last season when not injured he showed his class compared to what we had been seeing in recent years.

Issue does seem to be that he keeps picking up these little injuries, and surely as he gets older that is only going to keep getting worse.

Class CB. You rarely see him making the last ditch tackles that get round of applauses because he rarely makes the mistakes that require him to do so.

One doubt I have. Is he the CB to suit Onana as a GK and the style of play ETH would ideally be wanting us to play. I don’t think Kim min-Jae was meant as Maguire’s replacement, I think if we signed him. Maguire would have still been pushed out but Varane would have lost his starter place.

Don’t get me wrong. Still one of the best CB’s in the world like he showed last year. But last year we were playing different to how ETH wants us to play if he had all the right parts.

Are you honestly saying that Varane when we brought him wasn't at his peak in terms of physicality and footballing aptitude?

A player who had won everything and was coming off a season whereby he played the vast majority of games for Madrid and his national side and was hitting the age whereby players generally hit their physical and mental peak?

Seems a bit strange that.
Yep absolutely! That last season at Madrid he performed at a lower level than previous seasons with Madrid and he was a better player 3-4 years previously. Not strange just the reality.

It has been a fail. Too many injuries.

He was bought as a player who could help take us to a league title in 2021/22, which turned out to be a shocking season.

If Saudi come calling, the club should sell as he is clearly passed his best.

We don’t want him running down a 350k a week contract.

His impact should’ve been so much bigger. He’s actually a bit forgettable at times due to how fragile he is. He’s also got a quiet presence in games which can be calming at times but also he’s not exactly a leader.

I feel better knowing he's starting games which much mean he's been a good signing.

7/10.

He will need upgrading after this season

not much point having a Rolls Royce that’s always in the garage

Sums him up, really.

But the damnable part is that his status as a crock was very well known. Random feckers on the Internet knew this.

There's no chance in hell that a competent DOF signs that player with the idea of making him the defensive rock/centre piece of a team building towards a title challenge.

brilliant player, but I knew this would happen this season. 46 league games played from the previous 76. Has to be a squad player unfortunately.

Agree.

We buy big name player that look good on social media when pushing shirt sales.

The fact most people knew he'd be out for an extended period at some point over the season tells you everything you need to know.

Fantastic defender but can't be relied upon for a whole season.

Brilliant player, annoyingly injury prone. If you take away his injuries he's our best or second-best player in my opinion.

I think that he's kind of under-appreciated because of Martinez. When Rashford is out, then so are the goals. When Bruno is out we can't create. When Casemiro is out we have no midfield foundation. When Varane is out... Well, at least we still have Martinez!

It was an amazing signing. Him and Martinez are a top notch central defense.
Many posters have commented on his injury-proneness and it is a clear downside, but then that is why you do not have only two CBs in the squad. Our problem is we only have those two top ones, after that it is a massive loss in quality.

We should have followed up by upgrading our RB position and replacing Maguire.
It is very annoying that we have not done so (yet).
We could have done both by signing Pavard who was available, affordable, and willing to come.

Varane is like a high performance car that is in the shop half the time. Pretty much at the point where his absences stacking up make it not seem worth it. I love him when he actually plays, though.

Happy when he is in the lineup but yeah the injuries make it a bad transfer so far.

He is a class defender, and hopefully with the success he has had in his career a great role model for the younger lads.
Those times when he has celebrated with fans at the end of a tight victory show his love for the club already.
Yes a few injuries but not unexpected; so for me his signing is good HOWEVER to be a ready good success we should have got his understudy in by now (Pavard/Kim Min-Jae or similar).

Underrated. Underappreciated. He's the best defender we've had since Rio IMO. I still get excited seeing his name on the team sheet

They're saying that someone who is injured for half the season every season isn't in their peak years. Doesn't matter what your peak years "should" be, Varane clearly isn't in his because he has such significant fitness issues.
That's after we fecking signed him!! When we signed him he was off the back of a 40plus game season

1st season decent, last season very good. The fee now looks decent regardless of his age.

We knew he had injury niggles so I think people mentioning that as him being a failure is wrong as the problem isnt that though frustrating, its as another post mentions we havent strengthened the defenders behind.competing with him. Lindelof isnt for me good enough for 25games a season, Maguire has never played well enough and after getting rid of two dissapointing centre backs for differnt reasons......for nothing, what have we done....jOhnny Evans

This summer we have been unfortunate with injuries no doubt, but the foresight when we alreayd had some and our transfer dealins has been a shambled, over paid on most of the signings and one was for me totally the wrong signing, failed msierably and even turned down bids for players leaving our net spend far higher than it should be at this point, has again like last season led us to fail to do the numbe rof transfers we should be doing.

Varane has been fine, I never thought he was one of the worlds best ever even at Madrid.....but he is a quality defender and has done pretty much what I expected of him....but he needs cover and compeition far better than he currently has

He's brilliant when fit but he's made of glass. Typical of our transfer strategy for the last 10 years it was ill thought out.

Especially when you see the likes a Diaz at City, young and Vidic like.

He has some amazing games but he is not what he was 5 years ago. The Licha-Varane pairing needs to deliver a better defensive record as well for all the praise, far too many thrashings away from home, only partially on the CB's of course but we have had some shocking defensive melt downs.

Really Utd should avoid bringing in hard used Vets with a lot of miles and success on the record. Will need to replace Varane and Case by the time Utd get to seriously challenging. Maybe bring them in to take you over the top but not during the transition phase.

He has been brilliant. Only issue is his injuries. I hope the club sign an understudy next season so he can learn from Varane for 2-3 seasons before taking the torch.

Great player and a statement signing as one of the few genuinely world class players we have. He's been mostly assured and effective when he has played, but he hasn't been available enough. I put that down to advancing age, the increased physicality of the league, and our shite medical staff.

Seemed too good to be true. It was. Teams looking to secure their future at the top sell Varane, Casemiro and Schweinsteiger as they begin their decline and reinvest in the next generation. We keep buying them.

Easily one of the best CBs in the league when fit. Unfortunately does seem to sustain alot of injuries. However, I’m still glad he is with us.

Personally I don't think he has been as amazing as many are saying. He has been good. I wouldn't extend it any further than that. I don't see leadership that somebody of his credentials might have, I don't really see a force that's really moved the needle whether it be because he is injured and we can't get consistency from our partnerships or just his general presence in games is just kinda okay. You could say calming but my feeling is there might be other centre backs around that can achieve what Varane has at United.

But...I would say he wasn't that expensive for the quality and reputation he came with. So we go on about injuries but it was kind of priced in. It was nothing extraordinary in terms of a fee for that level of player. I'm sure his wages are gargantuan, but who cares. What would a Varane with no injuries, and therefore gets into a real rhythm and consistency be worth? A heck of a lot in this market, especially if he was a bit younger. So I don't think we can really say we got anything we didn't expect or that we got ripped off.

4/10

Injury problems, poor on the ball, a lot of defensive blunders resulting in some absolute thrashings.

Like Casemiro, he gets away with it because of his name and what he achieved outside of Manchester.

He's usually been good when he has played, but big picture he's just another one of the prime examples of how awful our transfer policies are.

Par for the course. Great when fit but quite often he's not. We needed a long-term replacement this summer and in typical United fashion, we fumbled the bag.

Injured out of 10.

But we kinda already knew that when we signed him. For the time he is on the pitch, he is top quality.

He’s a class act, very glad to have him (and Casemiro) at the club. Not just his imperious and calm performance on the pitch but for his winning mentality and professional attitude off the pitch. Even if he out injured he will be a fantastic influence on our other guys, especially the younger lads.

Seems like Madrid knew when to sell him. I still love his dedication but we need a younger player to be bought. Even Pavard although he isn’t younger was the right signature. Yeah he’s only one year younger but I don’t believe he’s had injury issues. Additionally with 4 cbs the minimum for a club like United it would seem varane won’t get renewed, and pavard would fill that role with a new young cb coming in and lindelof as the 4th choice in what is it- two years time?
Oddly enough small injuries like this come from misalignment in the hips or other parts of the spine. Unfortunately United’s medicine team isn’t “out there@ enough to work on that, look at martials posture for years, clearly a part of his body that needed work.

Generally happy, expensive and slightly unreliable but mostly excellent. If he was a car he'd be an Alfa Romeo.

He's good, our best CB but he's made of glass. He never really had the transformative effect we hoped he would have, and the injuries have robbed him of pace and athleticism that made him one of the very best centre backs in the game at his peak.

We should start prioritising younger profiles who are in their physical prime, and avoid injury prone players like the plague. If we get an offer from Saudi next summer we have to take it unfortunately, he couldn't even manage 3 games this season without picking up an injury.

7.5/10

Past his best and always injured. Still a good signing though.
