Trent can’t defend

When Shaw has gone through poor form, he has been slated around here yet rightly praised when in good form. Trent is going through a bad patch but is still a good player so expect him to come through this. How someone hasn't assisted him in his defending like the coaches is beyond me unless he is making the same mistakes.
Amen to that. He just looks very prone to regular shutdowns, don´t know if he is tired or his focus is more or less on the attacking side of things but it´s really weird. Something his manager and trainers should´ve noticed by now.

Trent is absolutely world class going forwards. Hes a defender though. Thats fine when your team is spending 90% of the game attacking and wins the ball back throughout the team and there is little defending to do. When they are in a situation like they find themselves now, he is a big liability. Question is whether you still think his defensive issues are worth his offensive output.

One of the most overrated players in the last 10yrs. Yeah he can whip a ball in but at the end of the day he’s a RB and no matter how much the game evolves a fullbacks job will always be to defend first and foremost and this guy can’t defend for shit!

Yeah, people on the Caf don't have a tendency to criticize our own players. Never happens.

I've seen many arguments on here where a United fan is going ham on a United player and an oppo fan is leaping to the player's defence

No blame going Trent’s way after last night? Surely the 3rd is down to him at least, he was marking the guy and then just let him wander off for a free header, or is that being blamed on zonal marking? If nothing else, there’s no communication from him to tell anyone Militao is there.

Both Trent and Nunez were asleep there.

He's rubbish.

I'd sell him if I was in charge at Liverpool. He can't be relied upon against any half decent winger.

Trent and Van Dijk getting both barrels from everyone.

Meanwhile, the real architect of their downfall, Joe Gomez...

He was a spectacular disaster last night.

Napoli targeted him in Naples and won 4-1, Madrid targeted him and Gomez on the right side of their defence last night and won 5-2.

Even early in the season before it became clear Liverpool were going to be a mess this season, Utd absolutely targeted him in the 2-1 win at Old Trafford. The big teams see him as a weakness consistently now.

I imagine when we go to Anfield next week Rashford will be targeting him again.

Meh at this point this thread should be bumped every time he defends well instead

I think he's arrogant and that it's all gone to his head. Plays like he's 'too cool' to go flat out and do any of the dirty stuff. It's all about what he does on the ball. The guy prances around thinking he's Messi.

Very much looking forward to that.

I wouldn't put that on Trent, clearly zonal marking and he's told not to follow the man.

I wouldn’t but I’d definitely have him on the training ground learning a new position. Probably a traditional RM or RW. He needs far too much protection from others and shouldn’t be anywhere near a back line.

Think he would work well in a traditional 4-3-3 as a RW with a target forward in the middle. He would have defensive cover from the RB and RCM and (in theory) should be somewhat capable of tracking a runner when defending.

he had a bemused look on his face as if he was surprised the defender was allowed to just run away from him

I agree and definitely looks tactical. Trent has been terrible, but this goal can't be on him since he was merely following instructions.

Trent hasn't improved his game in years. Typical with many English players who just don't develop their game at all, it might be bad coaching but most likely laziness as well from being in a comfortable position in life.

I listen to stalwarts of the game mainly Mark Goldbridge and DT and they are calling him out on it.

 amazing.

Palace should have scored 3. Two mistakes by Trent that a better side would have punished. How is he still starting for them?

When I turned the game on, he was already off but the commentator said he'd lost the ball 24 times? Surely that can't be correct? That's insane!

Didn’t he set a Premier League record last season for most times possession lost in a single game? Something like 48 times!

Actually, here’s the stat (and the story of his own personal crusade against possession geeks):

Looks like Gomez’s zone to be honest. Fairly typical example of Liverpool players’ inability to think on their feet mid-game this season.

Imagine being up against these defenders/midfielders next weekend (I know it wont happen, but I can dream)

Robertson, Matip, Gomez, TAA - Henderson, Fabinho, Milner.....

I wouldn't swap a single one of them for our players....

surely they won't start Trent vs Rashford
It’s madness if we start Rashford out wide and not against their two CBs.
Rashford may destroy Trent but so would Sancho or Garnacho while Weghorst wouldn’t do the same through the middle.

To be fair, it was the media that hyped him up to a level he couldn't sustain. It was clear as day he was a shocking defender even in his best season, its literally half the reason Liverpool had to play three workhorses in midfield. The calls from pundits saying he is greatest PL right-back ever were so over the top and they set him up to fail. Trent will never be a good defender, Liverpool need to work out if they will once again put a system in place that will let him show his strengths, and if not then this type of Trent will just be a constant feature for the foreseeable future.

that's true good point, i forgot we don't have a good striker option other than him
