The Haaland saga started last season. He was an option when Pep was going after Kane last year. It took so many months that City missed out on signing him during the season itself and as a result failed to win the CL because they couldn't finish their chances against Madrid.
I don't get how people try to compare our transfers situation to City's. City have a manager that is considered top two in the world, has been settled in his role for years, has oil money, an already great team and are perennial title favourites. We didn’t even know who our manager was until a few months ago and don't have champions league. Then you add the De Jong complication, us tried to shift our reputation of being transfer mugs and I get why things take time. Also if ETH is as much detail orientated guy as they say, we can't just chop and change targets, especially the ones he considers key to his system being implemented as soon as possible. People need to calm down a bit and judge at the end of the window.

Exactly, the other thing is we can't forget how much background cost it would have taken. That was basically the whole point of Halaand signing for Dortmund with a relatively small release clause. It basically makes the selling club powerless and means the agent and the player control everything on the next transfer. Dortmund was at least fortunate that he was good right away so they got maximum field value out of him, rather than him getting good towards the back end of his contract.
Haaland wasn’t for sale last year and everyone knew his release clause kicked in this summer. He was efficiently sealed before the window even opened.

City were ready to pay £100m for Kane. Haaland was available at that price last summer. Direct discussions have been going on since at least then. It was a saga by any reasonable measure.
Haaland was not for sale last year and Dortmund slapped a 200M€ pricetag on him to ward off potential suitors. He was only realistically available this summer regardless of when Guardiola, Madrid or whomever else wanted him. Kane was blocked from leaving by Levy, that’s all it was.

The way clubs approuch those deals depend on case by case. Barcelona apparently discussed personal terms with Raphinha in advance. Chelsea had tratatives with Leeds to discuss with Raphinha in a second moment. In both cases in general clubs are going talk to agents in the first place to check if they aren't 100% wasting their time.
Nope, it's almost always done in advance through intermediaries. At least at a high level - I'm sure all the legalese and fine print gets ironed out later.
