Well, as I say, hopefully I'm wrong, but I just can't see a player who contributed very little to a lower team in La Liga over 2 years, and who may have been decent in a handful of internationals in a couple of months, being any sort of prospect for a Utd team hopeful of any sort of resurgence.
To me it screams "X is coming back, its basically like a new signing".
Hope to be proved horribly wrong but I'd bet he doesn't see a minute of game time in the coming season.
It's expensive, but do we really have an option ? He is ETH's choice - and I would rather we pay £10 million too much and give our manager a chance to get his players in than get a cheaper one who is his third choice.
At what point does that stop though? We've had the reputation of overpaying for years - which leads to teams being able to demand £80m upfront and us paying it, players being able to demand ridiculous wages after a year of decent return etc.
We need to start having the sense to walk away from deals, that will stop other clubs taking the piss, same with sales - Pereria was basically thrown back at us because we didn't extend his loan, even though the club that loaned him agreed to a fee last year.
There's a reason why the club should have different options, but it seems we're all in on FDJ (to the point where its suggested other deals are on hold until it's sorted) which puts us in a weak position, even when the selling club is desperate for cash.
Since the Sancho saga (of 100 mil), I don't think we have over payed. Jong is a WC player so £70 mil is the right amount. The last time we over payed was the Maguire-AWB window.

I think there may be some reasons for an exception here. Having someone on the pitch who knows exactly what EtH is looking for will be a big support to the coach

Sancho at £70m ish was basically due to the covid situation, Dortmund and United were in uncharted territory at that point, I wouldn't say £70m and £250k a week was/is a bargain.
And to say we haven't been stung since then is a little disingenuous as we've only really signed Sancho (debatable), Varane (unfortunate with injuries) and Ronaldo (wages are huge) - we've signed Amad who didn't show anything in first team football when we paid 18m for him - nearly forgot VDB at £32m too.
It's fair to say we've overpaid consistently.
@Daengophile there will always be a reason to keep pursuing a certain transfer - but if the other side isn't budging, even though they're in a financial mess, then showing backbone and setting boundaries to other clubs then that's worth more.
You don’t always have to tear it up on loan to develop. It’s also partly the experience of fighting for first team football. Pellistri is 20 so at a good age to take a positive step forward.
It’s also a significantly different prospect being a young attacker at team near the bottom of the league (Alaves) vs playing for a top 6 PL team under ETH. Our new coach has shown he can bring young players through and so why not give him the pre-season to make an impact.

aslong as the plan b is equally as good then yes. If there is no plan b, or the plan b is a budget version that’s not as a good as him then no. My guess is if it’s not FDJ then it’ll be neves maybe.. so it’s a matter of preference.. FDJ for 80mil euros or Neves for 55mil and a little spare for other players.

If I were us, I'd pay Eriksen a small fee for holding out with his decision. Basically a "Wait and see if we get De Jong"-fee.
Then we're able to see Barca out and wait for them to lower the price for De Jong. If they are not to be dealt with, then give Eriksen an improved offer and promise him a solid amount of playing time
