I guess we will never really know if this was in the works prior to Brighton but it certainly doesn't look like it was after ETH said only days ago it wasn't about bringing in ANY players but the RIGHT players.

Have we ever agreed a deal with a club in less than 24 hours? It's hardly done because of the result yesterday. Anyway, it's United, so you never know

Not difficult to do when Juventus were considering cancelling his contract due to his high wages. I bet they all celebrated with bubbly last night.

but prob not if we won 3-0 yesterday….people would be more inclined to think hmmm maybe this will be a positive. I’m playing devils advocate here as I think this is a sideways/backward step, panicking or not

Yes, but we didn't. :)

More seriously, I don't think the adverse reaction to this comes out of hysteria in response to having lost to Brighton in the opener and negative press coverage. It comes out of most fans and commentators being in a place where their confidence in how the club has handled last season and this summer is already so strained that it doesn't take much. And this pretty much couldn't have been much worse, in terms of confirming what everyone had already started to strongly suspect (but couldn't yet know, with more than 3 weeks remaining of the transfer window).

My guess is they'll backtrack over Arnautovic due to the outrage.

If we are seriously desparate about depth then why not seek to bring back Herera for the Mid, surely even a 32 year old Ander is an upgrade on what we have?

When will people like you realise you need more than a manager to be a successful football club now? The Sir Alex era is over. United have not become a modern club yet. All the successful clubs have teams helping the manager. We are STILL placing sole reliance of transfer strategy on the manager and that’s why there is no continuity when managers leave. The fact ten Hag is only wanting to sign players who has worked with before should worry all United fans. He’s only managed one decent club and in one poor League so the pool of players is tiny. He needs help.

It's still strange that people don't understand this.

Pep was hired with the club built in his image, and his first year was still a failure, then City went out on a massive splurge and identified the players Pep needed to succeed.

Point is they didn't give him workhorses and tell him to turn them into ballerinas, people expecting Ten Hag to do something no other coach would be able to do is quite the leap.

Ragnick told everyone how it was, yet no one put an ounce of trust because they expected someone known for building clubs as a director of football to be a great manager - the evolution not revolution line told me that this would happen, we're trying to build a house on quicksand expecting it to last.

twitter/social media outrage? Do they even check in on that when getting transfers over the line? And if so, and they change targets becaus if it…I’m not sure that’s worse or better

Juventus seemingly want him gone and their fans are doing summersaults about the prospect of him leaving - in the same way we would be if McTominay was about to leave. It doesn't feel like much of a coup, does it?
Psg fans pretty happy when he left too

Backing the manager doesn't have to be getting him players. Backing him properly would also involve saying no if (for example) the director of football thinks it's a mistake. At the moment ETH has almost universal goodwill from the fans - if we give Arnautovic a 3 year contract, and the perception is that it was ETH's decision - he'll lose some of that goodwill. And the same goes for Rabiot.

And although things can change and people can be proved wrong - both these signings are far more likely to be disastrous than successful. And we'll have 2 more toxic squad players on inflated salaries, who we then find impossible to move on.

I refuse to believe that if we had a proper, well-respected, successful director of football (and Murtough is not) that they'd sanction either of these signings.

Can they be disastrous? They both seem like short term fixes to plug holes in the squad because we can’t make the long term signings we want to.

So instead we are making low cost squad filler signings so that we can pursue those long term targets next summer (when hopefully we’ve made progress).

Arnautovic in particular seems like a low cost option to offer backup to Ronaldo, Martial, Sancho and Rashford while allowing us to keep the funds for Antony & Sesko down the line. I’d rather that than buying some random ones their player for £30-40m and then not going back for the long term targets.

Liverpool waited on VVD remember.

Outside of his obvious non credible transfer info this is infact true, regarding his contract and current situation at Juventus. Whilst he is 26, it absolutely screams panic buy.

How does this not surprise us?

I'm not either. It's both, I guess.

Mainly I was assuming that given the strength and negativity of the response, that is going to replicate in all kinds of channels and get back to them as a perception problem.

So we're supposed to smile and watch despite there being legitimate concerns about our strategy? United fans have been extremely patient with the club since Fergie has gone but signing a 33 year old Arnautovic from Bologna is worrying. Why aren't we allowed to air our apprehensions? The club don't have any credit in the bank, they are hiding behind the new manager and it appears there is very little due diligence going on.

Why though? It’s just a depth signing.

Tielemans is talked about as £30-40m with a year left. Rabiot for £16m seems pretty reasonable.

Tielemans is normally quoted around £25. But he’s a better, and younger player than Rabiot, who has been utter dross for Juventus.

Nah.

Firstly, I hugely doubt either of them are signing for one year. Rabiot certainly isn't going to.

Secondly, they will both be expensive players in terms of salary. Rabiot makes 9m in Juventus, and would presumably expect a raise, as everyone does and gets when they arrive at United from a league abroad. So whatever this is, it's not low cost immediate squad filler. You could argue that we can always sell them again, but then again you could consider the likelihood of that for two seconds and then abstain from making that argument.

Thirdly, how often do you see top clubs make cheap immediate squad filler signings when they can't get their "long term targets"? Never mind the fairly high cost squad filler signings these would be?

Fourthly, considering the overall picture this window (what's been said, what's been done, what hasn't been done), it's getting increasingly difficult to believe United really have any long term targets. If they do, it can't be a very long list, if they think it's a better option to bring in these two.

Fifthly, this is where the penny unmistakably drops concerning what the club learnt from last season's disaster. Or at least we know that whatever they took from that, they think a part of the answer is signing Marko Arnautovic.

To be fair Juve have been dross for the period he's been there.

Any fee for him doesn't strike me as reasonable. Psg fans were delighted to see the back of him and juve fans will throw a big party. Add to that his salary will be massive it's going to be a shit deal.

No other clubs seem to be interested in him and they sure as shit wont be when he leaves us

We already have depth and numbers; Rashford, Elanga, Diallo, Ronaldo, Sancho, Martial, Garnacho. We need actual quality.

TBF I do think we need depth (and of course also quality) - just 4 of those players are good enough to be playing 25 or 30 games, which is far too few for 3 positions. But it's hard to see that it's at the striker position we primarily need that depth. Unless Ronaldo leaves, in which case we'd need something a bit better than Arnautovic for a replacement...

Seems like transfer funds really have dried up. We need an attacker and a midfielder... What are the cheapest options out there? Right! Get them in then.

Is Arnautovic good enough to play 25-30 games for us? Jesus Christ he was average as feck for Stoke and West Ham and that was during what should have been his prime years (26-30). We're going for Arnautovic, a player banned for racism, at the ripe old age of 33. It's an absolute pisstake.

Maybe we get Nkunku next season. They’ll have Werner and Sesko.

so he joins leipzig for around 20 million pound, but bigger clubs were reported offering 30 million plus? did they get a massive sell on clause or something.

Maybe he's just smart, and taking the path that has worked for many other young players by going to a Bundesliga club where he will get regular game time. Probably the right decision tbh. Still gutted to miss out on him.

some transfers make no financial sense, rabiot being one, especially when Juve by all accounts wouldve been happy to tear up his deal and let him go on a free. Then you consider the middle men / women involved and the amounts of money changing hands as commissions etc. the whole thing (like many other transfers) stinks.

We're not getting any ambitious player who will be in demand any time soon, he'll have most top clubs in his ear about a move starting a few months ago, we'll probably open a dialogue with him/his agents in June next year, scratching our heads and wondering how another club got the deal done so quickly.

Shambolic man. One week into the season and the only word i can think of is shambolic. For ferk’s sake.

The whole entire world is now working remotely on Microsoft Teams etc but United can't close deals because of a time difference. Farce.

With Sesko being confirmed off and FdJ looking less likely by the day, I've honestly spent most of my day wondering what the hell we'll do through the remainder of this window.

Between those two deals, we were seemingly ready to spend ~£100m. While we don't know the intended structure of those deals, we can say for certain that we likely have the funds ready for two quality first team players to be brought in to the squad at minimum, even beyond a potential Rabiot deal.

With that in mind, the window closing EtH having to field a team that looks anything like what we saw yesterday would be truly stink of neglegence (if the smell isn't bad enough already).
