I don’t disagree that he is ‘disrespectful’ - I’m saying that in the grand scheme of things, who cares? Saying ‘feck the club, I don’t owe them shit’ is something many agents would not say, but will almost certainly be the premise from which all agents operate. And if they don’t, then their loyalty is probably misplaced. So ultimately, preferring to deal with other agents will not be because they seem to want to take less money for their client than Raiola, or are less concerned with their client’s wellbeing than Raiola - it would be simply down to them giving interviews or not. And for us, we can get sensitive about that stuff, but I don’t expect Manchester United to base their policy around that. And I’d be very disappointed if they did, as it is extremely small time and petulant.
Raiola has said as much more than once himself. ‘I just give my opinion. I doubt Manchester United or Paul Pogba care about my opinion’. And he’s right. Manchester United probably don’t care. It’s a transaction about the elements. The outrage at his allegedly unsettling comments is for the fans. Raiola said some words, Ole’s own relationship with Pogba didn’t seem affected by them, Pogba’s own performances haven’t been affected by them. Yet people outside have come out with drama queen declarations of ‘that player should never wear the shirt again’ etc based on them. I think it’s because we are not invested to the tune of tens of millions of pounds in these deals that fans are so caught up on the soap opera of it. I read the interview. Raiola said ‘I don’t give a feck if United (or any other club) don’t like me, I don’t work for them’. Fans are throwing toys due to that. It’s absolutely normal and expected. Ole may feel the same but he is in a different professional position and this wouldn’t say so publicly. At the end of the day, the clubs can and will still do business together. It’s not a social transaction. Fans get so worked up about Raiola. I’m almost certain he unsettles nobody except fans on the net with his comments. The club is bigger than him, and are probably getting shit from many agents at the same time, read negative quotes and articles everyday from various quarters. It’s part of being a giant entity. People with power recognise that. Of they didn’t the Glazers would have packed up and left years ago on the basis that some people don’t show them respect in public.
Clubs worth billions being ‘better off avoiding’ a football agent because he is essentially mouthy is laughable. Business is business. He can say what he likes, they won’t be bullied. And to his credit, neither will he it seems. So when all the pantomime is said and done, it all comes down to whether there is a deal to be made or not. You say there is a reason why clubs don’t like him, but there’s also a more obvious reason why clubs still do business with him, and that’s because when it’s time to be professional they can take the playground elements out of it.
