I really want to work for Google, but I'm not paying six months of salary to work there.

Football is different though, players do sometimes pay the difference if they want a move bad enough.

It's different for an engineer on £40k a year, and a footballer on £100k a week.

I can’t stand this bloke
Yeah, me too. I think he was big on football twitter back in 2012-13 or so but then it became obvious he has ZERO sources and nobody actually cares about him.

This annoys me. You could have lowered your wage demands and stayed there if they were so precious to you. If not, don't write them a bloody love letter.

Isn't it due to a disagreement on the fee and not wages or have I missed something?

Wasn't the sticking point the fee rather than wages. The clubs couldn't agree on a price, no?
Yes, but 10k/w less as a wage would amount to 2m savings over 4 years for Roma, so they would have been able to pay higher fee

Nothing to do with his wages, and everything to do with Roma signing Vertonghan on a free so not wanting to meet our (reasonable) asking price.

To be honest, this sounds like desperately finding a reason to blame the player.

If United, who are much richer than Smalling, really want to get rid then the club should swallow that difference. See Sanchez.

Why don't Roma just pay up. If it was us wanting to buy one of their players they would be asking treble the fee. They will now have to go and get someone else who might cost more and will need to settle into that side. Forgot they had signed Vertonghen for nothing. He has done well in Italy. We will get the money we want for him elsewhere.

I don’t think we are desperate. He had a good season (unlike Jones, Bailly or Rojo), there are many teams who still need a “defensive CB”, not a ball-playing one. I am sure we will be able to sell him for around 20m

I like Smalling, hope he finds a decent club if he doesn't want to be 3rd choice at United.

Completely agree.

They didn't want to pay a fee / commit to a permanent deal. Nothing to do with the player, Roma looking at signing Vertonghen on a free transfer

Roma didnt want him enough .. He didnt want to stay enough.. he is just being nice and leaving the door open.

Why are people reading too much into it?

If Smalling really wanted to move to play for Roma he'd pay the £2M out of his own pocket, similar to what Herrera did when he moved to United.

He clearly doesn't want it bad enough.
The club gave Herrera the money to buy out his contract because Bilbao refused to sell directly to United. He didn't pay anything.

Yeah man, what a prick for saying goodbye to his colleagues.

Jesus Christ.

Roma should swallow the cost not Smalling or United. This isn't exactly the same as Sanchez as Smalling wages aren't crazy.

Smalling will have plenty of teams interested in him so we don't need to bend over like we had to for Sanchez. We might have other offers already hence not folding. Even if he doesn't he is still a good defender even if some of his other attributes don't fit as well.

Agree. The fact is we wanted Smalling as a backup and he wanted to play.

Why should we play nice and allow him to be sold for a cut price when he can do a job and we'd need to add squad depth to replace him AND we'd have to spend extra to do so if our asking price is not met.

Oh, I'm sorry. I wasn't aware you'd have to write your farewells on Twitter nowadays.

And it's more the tone which to me implies he's going back against his will which as I've pointed out he could have easily remedied. Not in a way that would satisfy him completely but in these times such Twitter 'statements' annoy me. You might be OK with the melodrama.

Fair enough if so. Then Smalling will be even more willing to join another team, shall the right offer arrive

Ridiculous. The Herrera case was extraordinary and I can't think of another example of a player doing it. It's not a normal thing and fans shouldn't expect it of players just because they're buthurt about not getting some extra cash for a player the club was actively trying to sell. Do you honestly think it's reasonable to expect players to pay us just to be able to leave when they already know they're not wanted?

I feel for Smalling. He was a good servant for us but doesn't fit our current style. He was a great hit in Roma and is a great fit for the league, it's a real shame he couldn't stay.

^^Agreed.
Most of the rumoured mega-deals involve players younger than 21/22 years. Top clubs seem willing to wager a huge premium on 'player potential'.

The 'old' 24-year-old seasoned professional, Timo Werner, only fetched 50m, whereas this little-known guy, Francisco Trincão, who is 20-year-old, has a similar valuation!

Players I've never heard of from top clubs going for this much money.

Either the market is just becoming an absolute pisstake beyond belief or I'm more out of touch than ever.

You'd need to follow Liga NOS to know anything about him to be fair. He's only just joined Barcelona, this story is a bit odd.

Out of the current CBs at the club id argue the case for him and Maguire being our best pairing. I expect he's wanting a move though.

Nah, it's just Barca being dodgy money laundering cnuts. More than a club indeed, they've branched out in to financial misconduct, but they'll get away with it... They always do.

I get the feeling Kaveh Solhekol was a used car salesmen before the sky news gig.

Says a lot but not a lot of substance.
