Failed miserably at Anderlecht, don't know if he's the standard of player Villa should be going for. Their 3rd transfer with a link to the Belgian competition, after Wesley and Engels. Both are better players than him though. Wesley will be a handful for a lot of defenders.

They needed to make an Egyptian signing seeing as who their new owners are. Clear political move.

It sounds to me like we want Maguire and Longstaff (Bruno if Pogba leaves, Pepe if Lukaku leaves).

I think we could do with all 4 and keep Pogba, sell Lukaku. And then sell some more deadwood, the likes of Darmian, Rojo, Bailly...

Honestly feel that we're done for the Summer.

I fear this might be the case but remain slightly optimistic because we don't usually do transfer business on tour. If things don't pick up when we get back to Manchester then we have a right to panic.

His quotes make it sound completely different to me. It seems he is confident he will get his man(men) and is happy to wait a couple of weeks and risk them missing pre-season rather than signing an inferior quality player right now.

Although I am hoping that Woody pulls of something special in the next two weeks. I agree with your point in bold.

To me it seems as if Woody was making up the story of we are working on one deal at a time as he didn't intend on spending and the longer he left it, he could say something like "These things take so much that unfortunately we were not able to complete all the deals wanted to" when he had no intention on doing them in the first place.

I think one of the reasons he doesn't want to spend money is that he got bit before and doesn't want to again. This is where a DoF would have been handy as Woody would been able to take opinions from someone who has a decent level of football knowledge. I believe that he thinks his football knowledge is so superior he doesn't care about the opinions of managers who have vastly greater football knowledge that him.

I think he is banking on all our youngsters coming good, which is a good thing although there is no guarantee that they will all come good. Also I think it too much pressure to put on them when they are just coming into the first team, hence why I think he should have bought a few more players which i doubt he will do but he could come out and surprise me. If he does so I will be happy.

I agree it smacks of a smokescreen to me at this stage.
The longer it goes on with this drip-feed of bids under the asking price bids and bids being prepared, the more it seems to me that Ogden's 100m budget wasn't that far off.

According to transfermkt the net spend over the since previous 7 seasons (since Fergies last one) has been £97m on average.

It seems to me that no one else will come in ,without significant outgoings (unless they can get Longstaff for £25 -30m) and that the Lukaku money is ear-marked to fund Maguire's transfer.

As others have said it seems like the same pattern as last year: get a couple of transfers done early and then lots of talk, lots of gossip, clubs bracing themselves for a bid but you know we tried but the price was too high, or there's no value in the market.

I hope I'm wrong but I think there's a very strong chance no one else comes in without significant sales.

As expected, just over a week before the window closes.

Remember him saying many of these players won't be here next season?

I'm happy with our transfer business and I'm quite content if this is the squad we're going with for the duration of the campaign.
There's still alot of unfulfilled potential in alot of our players who will hopefully continue to adapt and develop under Ole's leadership.

He said some of these players wont be here and since Valencia and Herrera aren't he was right.

Here's the full quote directly from the club website.
“We have to stick together as a team. We can't change the whole squad. One step at a time. I've said all along I'm going to be successful here. There are some players who won't be part of that successful team but there are some who will.

"The fans have probably seen the last of some of these players."

"I will be a success here and there's some players who won't be a part of that success".

"Everyone is getting a chance in pre-season"

"I believe in these players".

Ladies and gentlemen - our Yes Man. Our David Moyes 2.0.

I have to begrudgingly congratulate Woodward and the owners here, as much as I hate them. They have once again managed to con and manipulate an entire fanbase of a supposedly huge football club! I have to at least begrudgingly respect how sly and devious they are in pulling the wool over the eyes of a huge portion of our fans.

They are damn good at what they do. Credit where it's due.

Welcome to another season of mediocrity, then, mate.

This squad is finishijng no higher than 6th. Again. Probably lower actually.

There is absolutely zero credit for Herrera not being here. We wanted him to stay but he is gone, due to a delay in offering a Contract.

Everyone knew Valencia would be gone long before Ole's quote in April.

All other players are still here. "The fans have probably seen the last of some of these players." Probably not, I say.

We're only asking for £5.4M for Darmian according to the Telegraph. I would be very surprised if he's still here at the end of the window.

I kinda don't care anough to be mad anymore, all I can do is laugh at all the 'survival of the fittest/nowhere to hide' bs

Glad you are, wish I was. I doubt we see much improvement personally bar fitness and once the going gets tough the youth will not get a sniff.

Loved to be proved wrong but I'm expecting another unsuccessful scrap for 4th place.

I have a feeling that our only two outgoings will be Darmian and Rojo, yeah.
I can see us finally folding and accepting less than £10m for each of them to get shot of them this summer.

Also, in that quote he doesn't specify when people are getting sold/leaving. It seems he's talking long term more than anything. And there's little he can do with the prices qouted for some of our fringe players. Woodward (or whoever put price tags on our players) seem to think they can sell players who haven't played in almost a year for a lot more than they're actually worth right now.

That may be so but that doesn't mean that what he said was wrong. It simply got people's hopes up that what he meant was there'd be this great culling but in reality that's not what he said. He's always been very up front about how there wouldn't be wholesale changes to the squad and that there is no quick fix and that it's a long term project.

Fixed that for you, mate. That's our level with this current squad. Not top 4.

Don't let facts get in the way of a good clear out story. Ole promised he would singlehandedly force someone to buy Rojo.

These two seem to get it.

Palace should have paid more upfront if they didn't want to share the profits later. Players should be aware of signing on to these kind of deals as it results in the selling club digging their heels in as they have less incentive to sell.
This as well. This will not make players want to come to them if they can't progress.

 ay jesucristo, what is this cult and when did it become so large!?

It's a simple comparison for me even when we allow both Gill and Woodward some benefit of the doubt:

I don't recall Gill ever whipping his d*ck out and proclaiming he could best all the other clubs in the transfer market
.

When you say things like THAT, AND THEN go on to have mishaps in the market, you completely deserve every  and meme confronting your incompetence.

Also, you've clearly missed all the outrage on Judge. One of the big United podcasts or YouTube channels covered his embarrassing negotiations in depth. And then there was a torrential downpour of disgust.

Saying something that results in egg on your face as he clearly did isn't the cause of the comments, come on mate, you know that. I'm not talking about an episode or podcast on a YouTube channel, I'm talking about the average Joe. I'd rather discuss and debate actual topics rather than everytime a toilet blocks just seeing 20 posts about its Ed's fault. It isn't productive.

Gill also made comments about our ability in the market, that we had money and can use it, made derogatory comments about the fan protests about the Glazer ownership and insisted Ronaldo wouldn't be sold, only to then do so.

I don't care about Woodward, I don't even want to argue on his behalf and if he were replaced tomorrow I wouldn't care. But its boring to read comment after comment just perpetuating this lazy agenda that he is the absolute single point of failure.

What a bizarre take.

You do realise that the manager isn't actually involved in the buying or selling of players? If the board won't release enough money for one of his targets he isn't going to come out and create a story in the papers to make some fans feel better about the situation. In my view Jose's comments last pre-season were step 1 of his burn-the-house-down-and-still-get-paid exit strategy.

When Ole said some players won't be here he wasnt wrong as there always outgoings every window.
However, that, to me, was a message to the team after a poor end of the season i.e. if you want to be here I need more effort.

He's obviously gonna say he's happy and has confidence in the players cos that's good management. Players dont play well if they know they don't have the confidence of the manager and regardless of how the window goes he's going to have to work with what he's got.

His job is to keep that squad happy and motivated and I don't see how anyone can think that public comments to that end are a bad thing.

Agreed we dont need to get caught up in a big back and forth. My contention is that in the business world, after prolonged failure you do have to look to the top. And having blamed players and manager after manager for six years it's about time the CEO is accountable!

And the thing is, Ed has so many clear strikes to his name. Even if he didn't it would be wise to make some change up top - whether another CEO or dof.
