Is it me or is there a surprising lack of rumour nonsense surrounding us, considering we're almost a week into the window?
There are rumours but the general impression is that we won't do any deals during this window

We need squad options as well as first team options though and i've seen him play very well. The big issue is his injury record as thats hampered his development at Tottenham.
Agree we need squad options, but he would be massively over priced by Levy and we would pay the price of an established starting top class midfielder for him, and thats my concern. He is not consistent and injury prone. If we got him as a cheap, squad option, fair enough, but thats not happening.

Can't say I'm a fan at all. In my very humble opinion, he is a very average, over-hyped young English player. Even the majority of Spurs fans wouldn't be sad to see him leave, goes missing far too often in games, injury prone and just plays it safe, sideways and backwards, constantly. Check out Spurs forums and you'll get a much better idea of what I am saying. I'd take him as a squad option if he was very cheap, but he wont be so I would avoid at all costs. Not going to improve out starting 11
I would not gage a player's quality from posts on football forums.

I'm not gauging it based on that, my opinion is based on what I've seen. Obviously my opinion is just that, my opinion. I mentioned the forums because it seems to be the general consensus

Who links us to all these players.
Every window we seem to be linked to every player available.

Even if we are not linked someone will report saying we are. E.g. some journalist claiming liverpool beat us to Minamino.

In reality I bet Woodward is sitting there thinking about his next commercial deal rather than transfer targets.

The agents do to drive the price up.

Everyone knows United massivly overpays, so the agents uses the links against the clubs that actually are interested.

We get squad options by buying players for the first XI and relegating those from our current XI to be squad players.

If our starting XI isn’t good enough, why would we fill the squad with inferior players to those already here?

Buying a young player (not saying its Winks fyi) is useful for filling a squad option. A player with room for development on lower wages and yet can still contribute. We only really have Fred and McTominay as decent midfield options given that Pogba is highly likely to leave in the Summer. We need 2 if not 3 players.

And those two or three players should go straight into the first XI, and relegate McTominay and Fred to the bench. That's how we improve as a team. As good as Fred and McTominay have been lately, I really don't see them forming a CL winning midfield as it is now. If stiffer competition makes them (especially McTominay whose improvement is remarkable in such a short space of time) progress further and push their way into the starting XI, then we'll be better off for it regardless of who is on the pitch, and our squad options will be better as a result. If we buy Winks, Longstaff, Rice or any of those touted names the only opportunity for us to improve to a world class team on an individual level is banking on a meteoric rise in a player in a squad where competition consists of other average to good players.

I'd rather buy someone at the required level already, especially if we're selling Pogba and getting funds that way. That will improve us as a team immediately as well as pushing those already here to improve.

Agreed with this, with the only caveat being that I would be in favor of squad option in the case of a very talented young player. I don't mean Sancho, because he's already good enough to be a starter/star, but more so someone who has the potential to be a star further down the line. That's the only kind of depth I would really want in positions that desperately need starter quality. So in the case of midfield I would want Bellingham to be squad depth to Pogba. In the case of our other midfield options, I want players absolutely better than what we currently have like you said.

We're in need of actual impact talent.

United should just post on their website:

"As of 1 January 2020 Manchester United will no longer be concluding any new transfers with agent Mino Raiola, no matter how desperate we get and how big the client is. Any potential players or managers looking to work with this historic club would be advised to secure the appropriate representation."

Just feck him off altogether and let some other mug line his pockets with exorbitant fees and constantly unsettle their players.

Imagine Raiola having all them fingers in the Premier League pies.

Can we do that after Lingard is sold please?

Agree with this. World class potential talent is fine with me. Bellingham or the lad at CDM that's highly rated at Benfica (haven't seen him play myself) are fine to buy as 'squad options' but with a clear view to integrate them into the first team since they've so much talent, but I don't really see that type of potential in the names we have been linked with. It's just more of the same with Winks, Rice, Longstaff.

For example, in 06, we signed Carrick to bolster our midfield. I didn't really know too much about him at that point, but fair fecks to the management who identified him. Anyway, were people unhappy that it relegated Fletcher to the bench? Were they unhappy with the development of Fletcher over the coming two seasons? That's exactly what I want to see from us. Buy someone with the necessary talent and push those already here to the bench or to improve themselves in order to force their way into the starting XI.

If we had bought Scott Parker back then, Fletcher might have pushed into the starting XI, but our squad option would've been Scott Parker instead of Carrick then.

Stating the obvious here
They are, unfortunately that it what it is. We a desperate for players, but if it wasn't for their incompetence that wouldn't be the case. Unless it is a topnotch signing I would rather they steered clear of some of the name mentioned. Our season will be what it is. Knowing us we will shift out even more players and you and me might be called for a game.

Keep hearing / reading that funds are available but it is hard to do any business in January. Yet other teams who do not have funds manage to do business just fine.

Very good. I'll ask for 200k a week.

Why does the club have such a hard-on for James Maddison ?
He's a decent player but come on surely there's more fish in the sea.
