David Maddock: "United were clear they will not go above £40million for the Belgium international defender, who will see his value plummet to just £25m in six months' time.
....Mourinho has told his club board to explore alternatives if Tottenham continue to play hardball over their valuation of around £55m for the 29-year-old."

If that's true they'll call our bluff. Toby would have to force through a transfer to go for 40m.

I was arguing with a Chelsea fan recently about how pointless it is for young players to go there.
Another great example here, although they'd probably claim they "developed" him.

It’s not a bad place to go providing you accept your career for a top club will be somewhere else. You just have to know when’s the right time to leave.

I've no doubt that Maddock has no clue as to what's happening behind the scenes and is simply guessing/making up stuff. That said this stance would make sense. feck paying +60m for 29yo CB who's got a release clause active in 6 months.

If we sign Boateng (and I really don't believe it) - then we have lost it completely and we can give up the season.

£40m sounds reasonable. That prices this season at £15m. That's a fairly hefty one season price for a centre back who has recently been injured a lot.

If Spurs want more, I can see why we would think it doesn't stack up.

Similarly £65m for Maguire was crazy money, but talk of £80m is hilarious.

No wonder United aren't signing anyone yet. Just trying to weed out the bullshit.

At the prices quoted, it's actually better to sign no one and go back for Toby in Jan with an agreement for the summer. It's not even certain how much the team will improve with another CB. Focus on other areas for now.

Yep, at times we also need to understand how business works. He is available for 25m next year . Anything above 40 is a sackable offense.

Mina to United is still a story in both Mundo Deportivo and Diario Sport.

MD: United make an offer for Mina, but Barca want 40m.
Sport say Mina has has a preliminary agreement with Everton, but Barcelona are waiting to see if United make an improved bid.

Strange and puzzling if true. "Explore alternatives"- isn't that what we've done all summer, according to the clueless media? What more alternatives are they going to unearth in the last 3 days? Is Boateng at the same price a better deal? Utter nonsense.

There's no more defenders with the same profile as Alderweireld or Boateng left on the market. The obvious alternatives have all been signed up or have extended with current clubs. Probably only Manolas left.

Unless they mean the alternative would now be a younger player or a different position entirely.

Of course we would not then have a clear run at him and he might get more attractive offers.
I think we already have an agreement with Toby, in fact I think we have had an agreement with him for months, even before the window opened. So I don't see why we can't agree terms with him now, promise a 5-10 million sign on bonus and sign him up the day the summer window opens. If there's a clause, only the player's preference matters, no matter how many teams bid for him

IMO the potential availability of Martial made things a bit complicated. Levy wanted to use Toby to get Martial but we didn't want to dell to a PL Rival. I don't think Levy would have asked for 60 million plus if Martial wasn't having a contract standoff. He wanted to increase Toby's value to 60 million to match Martial's valuation so that we would be OK with a swap. He saw an opportunity and tried to exploit it, just like any good businessman. I'm hopeful that once Levy understands that Martial ain't happening, this deal will go through for 40-50 mill because Levy ain't dumb and he knows very well that the day this window closes, Toby's value drops by millions

Well lads, 2 ish days to go and I'm worried. I can't believe we look like we might only sign a CB. If we only signed a decent RW I'd be fairly content but only a decent CB and I'd be disappointed. The two most important positions for us to strengthen in were RW and lb, it really looks like only a CB at most which is crap cos we need someone to stretch teams down that side and help in countering quick. Oh well, hope something mad happens in the next 2 days.

LOL, 80 million for Kepa?!
They are better off paying 100 for Oblak
Wasn't he heavily linked with Real Madrid not long ago but they refused to pay his clause? He seems very highly rated in Spain and there were apparently lots of their fans calling for him to start over DDG.

Can't see Oblak wanting to swap Atletico for Chelsea right now to be honest

Atletico looking good this year and in CL of course

That was before he signed a new contract with Bilbao. His buyout clause then was only €20m.

Isn't it just the Premier League window that closes on Thursday?

I think we can buy from foreign leagues if we wanted beyond then.

The Mirror do not have a single credible sports journalist.

He's good, but not at your level yet.
