Transfer Targets this Summer

Those three are our most expensive signings since we bought Rooney in 2004 and they've pretty much all been unmitigated disasters. Berbatov's contribution gets talked up by some but it's been a pretty spectacular failure given the money that was spent to buy him. I think the failure of those three, but the £30m spent on Berbatov in particular, is the reason why Fergie has been very wary of spending large amounts of money on one player in the last few years.

People wonder why the midfield is currently in pretty poor shape and then seem to forget that we spent £40m on Hargreaves and Anderson.

Like I said, that comes with the territory. All clubs have to cope with spending big on players that end up being a appointment's. Not just United. It's all about knowing when to cut your losses and move on.

We let Hargreaves go in the summer and never replaced him, in a summer when senior pros like Neville, Scholes, Brown and O'Shea were all taken off our wage bill. If that's not the perfect time to spend big on his replacement, when is?

So because of that we should quit trying to buy quality players if they cost anything more than the bog standard £15-20m top end we seem to be going for.

We really need to invest in a couple of new, youngish but extremely talented players if we are ever going to do anything in the CL. These players cost £30-40m these days. Money that Fergie should have seeing how conservatively we have spent in recent years considering important players sales also.

Well I agree but despite those disposals in the Summer our wage bill increased at pretty much record speed! Ultimately it's now much more expensive relative to 2007/8 to hold onto our best players and also to acquire the top talent because of the collapse in the value of the pound against the Euro which started in the second half of 2007. That put ourselves and the other English clubs at a huge disadvantage to our major European rivals. Then in the last few years we've seen an enormous injection of cash at City which has been like a double whammy.

You do make a fair point that we have to expect some expensive signings to flop but I do think we could have cut our losses on Anderson earlier for instance and that's down to Fergie.

I'd like to see us sign Bale and Gotze but realistically I see us signing Tiote and/or a left-back. Jordi Alba would be nice!

We can't compete right at the top end of the market because City, Madrid and Barcelona are all there and they have much greater resources. I guess what I'm saying is that we have to be very smart with the money we do have in order to challenge them on the pitch in the short to medium term. Easier said than done I know.

I can see why Fergie wanted to give Anderson one more season and I think his early season performances came very close to repaying that faith.

Whatever, if Fergie does write Anderson off, that would mean Scholes, Hargreaves and Anderson all needing replacement at more or less the same time.

That's going to cost us a fortune but, with the relatively paltry net spend in recent years we should be able to afford to invest heavily in adequate replacements. There's been a lot of talk about our huge cash reserve these last few years, I certainly think we'd be having a better season if a bit more of it was invested in central midfielders and a bit less buying back bonds.

There will be money to spend this Summer, like there was last Summer, but it's a different matter when people talk about spending £30m-£40m on one player. I don't think we can justify that given that it would leave virtually no room for any other signings.

What do you think happens with Anderson now by the way? I think we're stuck with him. Then there's the issue with Fletcher. We do need to remember in all this that we've been ridiculously unfortunate with injuries this season and it's prevented the development of a lot of our players.

The thing is you dont have too either.

Ander herrera moved from sociedad for something like 7 million this summer,

there is quality young talent out there for a decent price, we just need to be more swift.

I think although our scouts have done a decent job with a few, lately we have hit alot of blanks.

Look at newcastle, they got tiote for like 3m? how much would he be worth now?

I think we would have paid the money required to get Sneijder last summer if he was 3/4 years younger, and I think they would be prepared to spend similar money this year if the situation is right.

If we were offered someone like Bale for £30-35m this summer (for example) I think we'd snap their hand off. Same with Hazard or whoever else Ferguson has his eye on.

The club seem to (sensibly) want to avoid players either with no sell-on value, or getting involved with bidding wars with the likes of City.

Tiote is a very limited player IMO. Would be a very negative step for our football team if we were to sign him.

I'd rather have someone alongside Carrick that can actually play football rather than a physically imposing player like Tiote. Carrick/Cleverley could be a very decent partnership next season.

Perhaps so, but using him purely as an example

One of Martinez or M'Villa
One of Gaitan or Hazard (haven't seen these two that much, but it looks like we have genuine interest in them)
One fullback (Clyne?)

Oh, and get Pogba to sign that contract!
