Transfer Chat

Daniel James done. Hopefully, he does not count as one of the rumoured 5 signings in.

Now we need to fix the major issues among our starters:

RB: Many options. We have Dalot and Laird coming through, so getting Meunier would make the most sense.
CB: Think Raiola and De Ligt have only been using us for increased payment for Barcelona. With the new rumours of Napoli going after Lukaku, we could potentially arrange a swap for Koulibaly and some extra £££ from us (Lukaku + £20m-£30m). Next best option would be Nathan Ake imo.
CDM/Holding: Ideally we should try our best to get Rodri. The best option available, as he can pass and protect. Ndidi is more a protector, and we would continue to struggle to play out of defence. A cheap and potentially smart transfer would be Kalvin Phillips from Leeds. Can pass, protect and showcased a good ability to play out of defence.
CM/CAM: Barella should be top of the list. Auoar is a top prospect. Both would strengthen our starting 11.
Attacking player: Dependent on availability, Lukaku staying or leaving and who will come to our club. Fekir, with 12 months remaining on his contract could be available for a low fee. Sancho will only be an option next summer. Mandzukic might be a good short term option and would provide some cynism and experience to our attack. Haller would also be a good option, but only if Lukaku leaves.

Time to panic? This time last year when people came out with similar “premature” statements, they were laughed at. The panic however was justified. Once again it seems we have no plan and no solid transfer strategy in place. I remember ole saying he wanted his new signings finalised early, in order to get a solid pre season in. Not looking likely is it?
Well, one down several to go...

In fairness to the team last season (and I have been critical) I think it is not just a lack of effort but a lack of confidence, when things were going well the effort was made, but vicious circle a few knocks and it spiralled, we can and should blame the players but I think that a few of the players, like Martial, Shaw, Pogba who have been written off/lambasted may well come good even with a few signings, if things are going well, my biggest concern is that the players do not have mentality to dust themselves off and go again.

Do not get me wrong I do not think Pickford is the best GK out there by a mile, not even the best English GK but he really doesn't take a lick even when he is beaten, confidence always sky high.... we need players like that as much as we need quality, we have quality which is not performing, we do not have balls out attitude.... not sure who is out there who fits the bill TBH.... if we could somehow get Schmeichel and Keane back in their pomp the rest would take care of itself.

On the BBC gossip page this morning. I know, this made me shake my head in despair.

Manchester United want to sign Wales winger Gareth Bale, 29, on loan from Real Madrid. (Sunday Mirror)

Manchester United and rivals Manchester City are considering a move for 26-year-old centre back Harry Maguire, but City could be put off by Leicester's £90m asking price. (Mirror)

also
Just to make you even angrier this Sunday morning.

England midfielder Jesse Lingard, 26, is set to be offered a new £130,000-a-week contract extension at Manchester United. (Sun on Sunday)

Let’s hope it is just that. GOSSIP!

If we buy AWB where does Dalot fit in? Shouldn't we give Dalot a chance with Young as a backup till Liard is ready next year?

Central defence should remain a priority as we have 4 players, 2 of which (Jones and Bailly are injury prone).

I think Laird and O'Connor could be ready sooner than you think.
If they re going to be ready sooner , does it make sense spending 50m+ on a right back?
Central defence should remain a priority imo

Yes. That is one of the reasons some people here have doubts about the long term benefit of spending £50m or potentially more on a defensive fullback. Getting Meunier as a 2/3 year stopgap, or Atal because he would also be our best right winger makes more sense imo.

We should get the best RB we can get, whoever that is. Laird and O’Conor have zero first team experience at any level, Young is finished and Dalot looks a long way off.

We’ll be lucky if one of Laird, O’Connor or Dalot develops enough to be good enough in 2-3 years let all of them and there’s always going to be room for 2 good RB’s.

There s no guarantee that AWB will be a hit either...he could be a one season wonder..

Obviously that applies to any potential transfer, fee if any are guarantees but we should buy the player deemed to be the best option there.

The other players at the club aren’t a factor because whoever comes in will be first choice so whether it’s Meunier or AWB their all in same position.

True. We see first hand how Laird and O'Connor are progressing as they are here at the club. I also thought Dalot done well in the games he played last season. We don't know as much about Wan Bissaka, only he had one good year at Palace. So there is no guarantee he will hit the ground running here.

We also have to see if the club intends on keeping Axel and what role he LL have

AWB and Maguire for upward of £130m when we could realistically sign Meunier and Alderwiereld for £50m.

Especially spending as much on Maguire would be incompetent. He's a good player no doubt, but you can get players of similar quality or better for less. If it's the English quota that's important to us, we could go for Godfrey, coupled with Tuanzebe and Smalling that should be enough. Same with Max Aarons and AWB.

I'm not saying we should always overpay. But Madrid knew they needed to get better, they knew who they wanted and got them all (or mostly) in asap and they will now have a full preseason and Madrid

Meanwhile we always seem to find a way to drag out even seemingly straight forward transfers

Am I crazy in thinking our squad might actually be worse next year?! I mean if we let Pogba, Lukaku go, along with Herrera, we've really lost some of our better footballers. We got James, and probably AWB, and maybe Bruno, but that's looking like it's it.

De Gea (maybe still unfocused)
AWB, Smalling, Lindelof, Shaw
Matic
McT, Fred
James?, "Rashy", Martial

Yikes...

Your theory is based on the assumption that we won't replace any of those players you mentioned. We won't let Pogba go unless Madrid backs up the Brinks truck for him. If that happens, I believe we'll go after top class proven quality to replace him, so I count that as standing still, not losing quality. Herrera is a blow, but we'll surely be looking to bring in a CM to fill gaps either as a starter or a role player (see links to Bruno, Saul, Longstaff, etc. - it's clear we're in the market for a CM, but the press have no idea who we're actually going for). Lukaku blows hot and cold and while I agree we shouldn't let him go without a replacement lined up, I don't think replacing him is a blow and at least gives us a chance at a reset in the striker position.

Herrera can be replaced with better or similar quality. The only issue is if our recruitementstructure is able to identify them.
Lukaku is not difficult to replace at all, given that he is not very good at playing the way we want to play(high press and fast-paced).
De Gea can be replaced with Oblak, who has been better on average over the last 12 months, but again a question of ££££.

Pogba is the only one among those going out that we cannot directly replace with someone of similar quality. If we lose PP, then we will most likely find some new players to be the focal point of our attack.

No way we let Pogba and Lukaku go without replacements in. We would get left behind with that starting 11. Midfield not good enough and No natural goalscorer in the team. I'd be dreading the season ahead if this is the best Utd could do. With that team it would be like watching the Everton game when the hammered us back in April every week.

Now that you've mentioned it, what happened to Longstaff rumors? I'd like him here.

Like mentioned above, i'm not sure who replaces Paul Pogba and can be as effective. And Lukaku, i think maybe Haller or someone like that we've been mentioned with, but i don't see much activity on strikers so far despite it looking very much like Lukaku is gone.

The rumors have all dried up, unfortunately. There was talk on here that he'd signed a new deal earlier in the season, and that Newcastle wasn't going to let him go for a reasonable fee, but I'm not sure how much anyone knows or if it's all conjecture.

I have a muppet transfer plan.

Given that Juventus are after Pogba, how about United propose a deal with them asking Ronaldo and Cancelo in exchange.

Then we can move to sort out our CBs

De Ligt and Duben Dias will cost a combined total of 135 m Euros or 120 m GBP.

De Gea and Lukaku can be sold for around 100 to 120 m GBP combined.

Now come to Midfield
Bruno Fernandes will cost around 65 m GBP
Rabiot is free

Then we can move on to sign Ruben Neves for around 40 to 50 m plus Lindelof... we already have Tuanzebe coming back and once we sign de ligt we won't need Lindelof.
Or we can go for cheaper option of Tielemans for 35m gbp. Lindelof will be sold for just as much.

We can add Onana for around 40 m.

Sanchez can be let go for free.

So Ins
Ronaldo - in pogba exchange
Cancelo - in pogba exchange
De Ligt - 67 m
Ruben Dias 53 m
Bruno Fernandes 65 m
Tielemans - 35 m
Rabiot - free
Onana - 40 m
total spend : 260 m gbp

Total Outs:
Pogba - In exchange of Ronaldo and Cancelo
Sanchez - Free
Lukaku - 55 m
De Gea - 50 m
Lindelof - 35 m
Darmian - 5 m
Rojo - 5 m

Total Return: 160 m GBP

Net Spend: 100 m

We can add a suitable right winger too if we want to take our net spend to 140 150 m .

To be fair, other clubs (including us) routinely bend over for Real Madrid and give them what they want for a reasonable price, despite knowing that they are wealthy. When United are in for a player there's a massive mark-up on transfer fees.

I see where you are coming from but we haven’t started pre-season yet. If come 1st of July, we’re still a few signings away from being competitive then fair fecks.

Hope this British & hungry transfer policy is fake news. Or we might end up with a lineup like this:

----------------- Rashford -------------------
----- James | Lingard | Sancho -----
------------ Longstaff | Rice -------------
Shaw | Maguire | Smalling | AWB
----------------- Henderson ----------------

Sixth FC.

God I hate transfer silly season. The football media clearly have no clue about anything and just throw enough shite against the wall in the hope that some of it sticks and that’s enough to ‘prove’ they were right all along.

Day 1: Man Utd looking at Player X
Day 3: Man Utd bid £50m for Player X
Day 5: Man Utd agree terms for Player X
Day 6: Man Utd close to completing transfer of Player X
.
.
.
Day 8: Man Utd linked to Player X

Cycle repeats.

I actually don’t mind that team in the main assuming the younger additions develop as expected. That side studded with a few galacticos would be an improvement (in a couple of years) on where we are at the moment. Lingard, Rice and Smalling as backups.

After studying tactical theory for years, I've come to conclusion that the future of football is 4-4-1-1 with two principles - stack your team full of defenders, and pass it to your star man who knows what to do. We could become pioneers in this approach, because unlike 95% of teams in top 5 leagues, we actually have the leading man who is capable of doing everything on his own (talking about PP naturally). It's pretty simple and even a non-manager like OGS should be able to implement it. Something like this, I've decided to replace wingers with box-to-box midfielders because the key attributes for wide role are stamina, tackling, and short passing. All they need to do is win the ball quickly and pass it to Pogba.

---------------Onana
Lindelof---Koulibaly--Chiellini--Shaw
Ndombele--De Ligt--Umtiti---Fred
--------------Pogba (c)
--------------Dybala

Before you call me a muppet, let me explain why I believe these could be realistic transfer targets.

1. Plenty of deadwood to sell (Jones, Smalling, Matic, Martial etc.) - possibly up to 150 million income.
2. DDG can hopefully be sold for about 50m while Onana shouldn't cost more than 30m, so we're actually making profit here.
3. Ndombele, De Ligt, Koulibaly, Umtiti - no choice but to pay the full prices here, should be about 250 million.
4. Dybala, Chiellini <--> Lukaku, Darmian straight swap (Juve are interested in both players and transfermarket values are comparable). Dybala had excellent partnership with PP and they carried Juve on their own. Now I know that Chiellini is a veteran at this point, but we need a experienced vice-captain to complement PP.

Net transfer expenditure: 100 million (even with that Welsh nobody from Championship we've already signed).
