Christ! He's actually only 27! He could potentially still flourish though, maybe a killer season in Freiburg or Eintracht.I know he scored the winning goal in a World Cup final, but Mario Götze was hailed as the next big thing as a teenager, with many saying he was a bigger talent than Hazard and Neymar. He's now being released by Dortmund at the age of 27. Bad luck with injuries and illnesses more than just a shite attitude, but still a damn shame he never got to realize his potential.

Yoann Gourcuff is another who looked a sure thing, and just never made the step up. Got a move to AC Milan and pissed it away by being an unprofessional idiot, apparently. Had honestly forgotten he existed until I scrolled through some old FM legends.
By the way, what's Sergio Canales up to these days?
Miguel Veloso - remember hearing his name being branded about all the time when he was in the Portuguese youth setup. Ourselves, City, Chelsea and Arsenal were apparently in for him when he was at Sporting. Nani also done an interview back then saying that he was hoping that we would get him as he had the quality to play in our team.
To add to this. It is hard to overstate how hyped Adu was in the US when he “broke through”. At the time MLS was only 10 years old and Beckham was still 3 years away. For ANY soccer story to make the news was rare. I remember joining a group of friends at a packed bar in Alabama (Alabama!) to watch his debut for DC United. He was being hyped as the next Pete or Maradona. To this day I have never seen a us player hyped that much. I think the specter of his failure will temper expectations for a long time here.
Quintero, the Colombian tore up one of the youth world cups, got a move to Porto and big things were expected of him. Made 42 appearances in 5 years at the club, now at River Plate which isn't a massive fall from grace but anyone who watched him at that world cup, he was sensational.
Was he ever a wonder kid? Was ok for the youth teams and ok when in the first team, bar that slipping incident. I also don't know why that transfer wasn't properly investigated, it was incredibly shady by Spurs and they just got away with it. Should be a cautionary tale for other youth players to not let agents dictate their development.Zeki Fryers.
He's only made 112 appearances in his career and he's 27 now.
@Alex99 Joaquín is a legend
He's 38 and still playing with over 700 games in top flight. The reason he didn't get his 52nd cap is that he spoke out against Luis Aragones. It's not like Spain were starving for midfielders at the time.

Xavi
Was touted as a wonderkid and ended up being a bit part player who was carried by Messi and Iniesta. He was fortunate enough to ride the coat tails of Spain's international success. He ended up in Qatar which was about his level.

Neymar never played for Sao Paolo, how did they wipe the league clean together there?"No impact on football" is probably harsh as he had successful career as a young footballer in Brazil - but I would have put my house on Ganso being a worldwide star when he and Neymar were wiping the Brazilian league clean together at Sao Paulo. Went to Sevilla and was shite.

Anyone mentioned Adel Taarabt yet ?
Was he touted as a wonderkid? My feeling is that Taarabt was what he turned out to be, i.e. a very inconsistent flair player suited to lower league football.
What happened to Petrucci and was it Adam Ljajic? Think that was his name. Two players for us who were meant to be the next big thing about 10 years ago and I haven’t heard of at all since.
Actually I think Ljajić did have a career in Serie A but I’ve no idea about Petrucci.
