What a movie
I do wonder how the viewing of this will be on TV. I got a big screen, and a nice sound package. But this movie is a proper cinema experience

I thought the original was a 7/10 and I think this one is, too. It's Rocky, it's Rambo, it's Team America. It's one man, bucking against the system, thumbing his nose up at the powers-that-be. He's brilliant, he's broken, he inspires, he frustrates. It's not meant to be taken seriously and the main difference between this and the first film is that the actors are really in the planes this time. But the clichés are there in abundance and the laugh out loud moments are matched in quantity by the shaking your head in disbelief moments.
Like the first one, I'll never watch it again but I don't regret watching it.

Me and a buddy watched the OG and then went to watch the sequel back to back. Totally worth it.

So you have your giant normal screen in front of you, but then you have additional screens on the walls to your left and right - giving you peripheral vision for some scenes (basically all the flying scenes)

In the original draft of the script, they had Goose dying from the plane crash landing on an aircraft carrier. The Navy forced them to change this, as they didn’t want as many crashes as the original script had included. So they had to find another way for Goose to be killed:

Finally went to see this yesterday evening. What a ride! Saw it in IMAX, which certainly added a lot to the experience.
I mean the movie is unapologetically over the top and a bit silly, but it's also incredibly fun, engaging and well-crafted. It was basically like a shot of adrenaline and nostalgia straight to the jugular. It doesn't quite beat Fury Road for my favorite recent action movie, but it was certainly close. I can understand the people criticizing the plot and the jingoistic elements, but on the other hand, I was definitely able to recognize those problems while still enjoying the movie to the fullest. Also, Tom Cruise is just something else. Criticize and mock him for the scientology thing all you like, but the man brings an unparalleled energy and passion to his projects - one of the last true movie stars.
If I were to point out a few criticisms it would be:

- Too many secondary pilot characters. Other than Rooster and Hangman there was really no time to build the characters of the others and besides Bob, I could never recall who was who.
- There was a weird shift in tone towards the end, where it goes from dramatic (Maverick sacrificing himself for Rooster as part of their reconciliation arc) to comedic buddy-cop style get-away.
- Not enough Jennifer Connelly.
I'm on 4 watches of this now and going to make it to at least 5 before it closes at the cinema.

Watched again last night with two mates I convinced to see it.
Both came away blown away, said it was great and they're really film geeks. They just thought it was excellent, one hasn't even seen the original. On second viewing it was just as special and probably the best movie of the year tbh.

Pretty sure all the Top 10 got a Chinese release too where Maverick didn't.
