Television Top Gear

Thank God for Chris Harris. The guy is a thorough petrol head. I love that the show is more forcused on cars again, rather than this entertainment bullshit. I just hope it stays like this.

Yeap. Good balance.

Maybe they need more women guest because the two made the show for episode 3.

Episode 3 is by far the best show so far.
More low key but definitely getting much better. Less bombastic. More focus on the car and less distraction on personality.
The bit with Tamsin learning how to drive fast and the Nuburgring drive were funny. They should do the Nuburgring as a test feature for cars in the future.
Anything with Sabine driving is something else..

This show has been so much better than the completely phoned in Grand Tour, or the last 3-4 series with the 'Holy Trinity'. Shock horror having a car show be about cars, rather than padding out Clarkson's column in the Sun, actually works.

Yes, totally agree. The show turned into a format that simply allowed them to piss about and have a laugh, and lost focus of what made it great to watch. I thought it had become rather repetitive and boring in the end and needed a change anyway. As for the Grand Tour, well it's rubbish.

I always held the belief that you could do fun stuff while still keeping the show relevant, the trio of city cars and the shipping containers tonight was proof of that.

Chris Harris was much less of a twat in this episode, so here's hoping that continues. Otherwise a really, really good episode. That Chiron is something special.

"It's like you're always stuck in second gear."

Haven't caught any of this season yet but I've heard lots of people agreeing that they're almost completely over the teething problems and settling into a nice groove.

No secret I don't like Clarkson and Co and found TGT excruciating to watch and had it in my head that it was because I find the three of them incredibly irritating. To my surprise though there was two really old episodes of Top Gear I caught on Dave this week and really enjoyed. It was a reminder of just how good they were and how good the show was during its heyday. They're definitely over that peak now and settled into charicature like roles with the same two or three jokes up their sleeve.

I'm glad it appears we have a car show back, for too long that was forgotten.

I'm a bit disappointed with how the Chiron was underplayed. I mean this is a 1500 Bhp hyper car. I didn't feel that excited to watch it compared to the McLaren and La Ferrari episodes. Still a bonkers car. I would have just loved a little bit more hoopla for it.

Well it's still being tested by Bugatti so it looked like they were a bit limited, to be fair. I'm sure they'll do more on it in future.

That's the thing though, I don't think it is an "EXCITING" car apart from the fact it has huge HP and goes very fast in a straight line. Apart from that it does nothing else that any other sports car can do. We had the excitement of the Veyron because it was the first, this is just a further step in that development.

If the Chiron breaks the 300mph barrier it will be more than that.

Big 'if', though.

This is pretty much exactly what Harris said. He just liked pointing down a runway and shouting ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

it actually *is* possible to build a hypercar that doesn't excite very much. Porsche apparently succeeded in this with the 959 back in the days. Or so it is claimed (i never drove one ;))

I know. But it is still a milestone sort of car. I remember the episodes when Jeremy and May drove the Veyron. It really made it feel like a special car. Even though this is just an upgrade on that. It didn't feel that special at all. Maybe it isn't that special a car anymore.

Well it's not, really, it's just stupidly quick. The reality is it's still using old tech, the P1 and Porsche 918 are far more of a milestone in terms of hypercars, the Chiron is just an insanely expensive monster, that as Harris said, is not comparable to any other car out there.

It's definitely better without Evans. My only complaint is it all seems a bit unnatural. It doesn't really seem like they're as knowledgeable about cars, Harris aside, which makes selling the already overly scripted dialog more difficult I think.

I get all that. But they are talking about this car doing 300 Mph. The P1 and 918 are just an adaptation of older tech, like all cars are.

See, personally, I would love those 3 hybrid cars over the Chiron any day. My only point being that I feel if this was in the hands on Clarkson, it might be made to feel a bit more special. Lets see what they do with it on the Grand tour. The only episode of the TGT I liked was the one with the 3 Hybrids. Harris is good, but he doesn't know make me drool over a car. That was my only point in all this. Sorry if I didn't make it clearly.

Is it because Clarkson pulls a funny face and shouts POWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA while accelerating?

They didn't even let Harris go "300mph" because the car isn't capable of that yet. So it's just another car that accelerates fast to 230mph.. So no better than a Veyron then. Apart from looking like a giant Iphone in rose gold, it's really not "that" special IMO. Perhaps if it was the finished article it might have got a bit more of a fanfare.

Another pretty fun episode, just a shame Eddie Jordan made a return..please get rid of him, please!

Yeap... improving by leaps & bounds. A proper car show now.

Actually excited by the cars, racing etc now -- nice change to the three old sods, who always put the focus on them rather than the cars.

I've seen just one episode of first season and couldn't bother with rest, but this second season looks pretty good from what I have seen so far.

I like the Grand Tour trio and will still probably watch them over Top Gear, but one thing that BBC has over them is amazing production, it's miles better than Grand Tour's. Footage, scenery, sound, camera work, everything is on another level to Amazon really. I also like their choice of cars so far, Grand Tour became repetitive.

I didn't like the Aston Martin vs Mercedes bit, them picking Aston Martin over S class coupe gotta be one of the most biased scripted opinion ever made in Top Gear. Everything in Aston's interior apart from seats looks like fecking 7 year old Renault Megane.

I really like the new top gear. Last season was rubbish, but TGT wasn't really much better. I think those three are too full of their own hype.

Topgear is back and it's about cars, not clowns - just the way i like it.

TGT has the same tired jokes we have heard for the past decade.

Really enjoying the current season since evans has gone, TGT will have to up their game next season.

Really don't see why Eddie Jordan is still involved, might have worked if they were planning on doing some F1 segments but that seems unlikely with the BBC losing the rights. Sabine's being used a lot better this series though.

it's miles better since Evans left. Matt Le Blanc seems well able to handle himself as the show's main host.
Sabine.....there's something about her.

Just watched the repeat. Refreshing that they took some perfectly good old cars and didn't wreck them. I approve.

Wasn't sure about the Cuba thing tbh, but I quite liked the circuit race at the end, and you can be sure that old Top Gear would have destroyed the cars.

Totally agree to this..
Evans was dire and almost ruined the show beyond repair.. Matt is getting better every show and the other duo is great..
Sabine just makes the show feel alive.

This season of TG is getting so good that TGT will need to step up their game..

I feel like I'm the only person in the world who doesn't like Sabine.

She's obviously a good driver, but all her to camera segments are the same. I don't think she's managed to not mention the Nurburgring once the entire time she's been on the show.

Well it kind of is her thing and she drives the shit out of it..
