Top 5 War Movies

One additional thing about Enemy At The Gates is that Stalingrad veterans didn't like it. One scene they especially didn't like was the one where the soldiers are singing and celebrating, since the only thing the soldiers did when they weren't fighting was looking for food.

One of the best movies ever

I know that 'Enemy at the Gates' isn't a completely accurate depiction of the battle but I liked it because it was refreshing to see a WWII movie without an American-hero character.

Besides, regardless of how accurate the film depicts the battle of Stalingrad, I was pleased to watch a mainstream film about what was arguably the most significant battle of WWII. I don't think there are any other well known films about Stalingrad but if there is, I would like to see them.

I agree with you on that point. It truly was the biggest turnpoint in the whole war.

I'm sure there are some Soviet movies about Stalingrad.

If you don't enjoy American centric movies, perhaps you should watch non-American movies.

Platoon
Saving Private Ryan
Apocalypse Now
Full Metal Jacket
Enemy at the Gates (Because it's about snipers fighting in Stalingrad and isn't a depiction of American heroics).

Nor should any WWII movie, it's not like America did anything heroic during WWII.

Paths of Glory
Come and See (in the original Byelorussian, not the atrocious dubbed version)
Apocalypse Now Redux
Platoon
Cross of Iron

1) Paths of Glory
2) All Quite on the Western Front
3) Dr Strangelove
4) Born on the 4th of July
5) The Great Escape

Most of my favourite films are American and I'm sure there are dozens of American (and non-American war films) that are miles better than 'Enemy at the Gates'. I simply mentioned it because it was a decent film, about a fascinating battle that defied certain expectations I had of it

Anyway, maybe I should not have had such expectations of American patriotism from a film that I think was directed by a French bloke! In fact, three of the American films that I listed in my top 5, are not glamorised depictions of American heroics so perhaps I should have just said that it was good to see a film about Stalingrad.

Just for the record, I haven’t jumped on that stupid ‘down with the USA’ bandwagon. I like most things American; I suppose I just dislike films based on historical events, where important details are changed in order to appeal to a particular market. I can’t blame the directors, though.

You've got to have 'Patton' in there. A fantastic movie.

Written by Coppola too, before he hit big.
