Top 5 Dylan albums

Yeah, I've not heard much Costello

There's also "Jilted John"...anyone remember that?

Jilted John was comical, but Costello goes right for the jugular...listen to this at about two in the morning when you've hit the Scotch, with the lights out and you'll see what I mean!

Definatley someone to rival Dylan's wordplay and art of songwriting....I can recommend some stuff if you need it.

I love what little I've heard of Costello. His track 'Shipbuilding', which was also part of the High Fidelity soundtrack, is awesome.

Bitter little bastard. I loved My Aim is True and This Year's Model though I don't listen to them because they're on vinyl. Should put him in the Underrated thread.

Alison is one of the best and bitterest love songs ever written from My Aim is True.

Nice to see how we have sequed from Dylan to Costello with consumate ease. No substitute for class and talent.

Plech - do you want some recommendations?

I'll take some recommendations, I'm a Costello philistine.

Yes okay then... although, it's a bit pointless as I never buy from record shops anymore, but have yet to work out how to download stuff... meaning I basically have no way of getting new music and in fact haven't bought a record for about 3 or 4 years

Download azureus and use torrentz.com. It isn't rocket science

That's shocking and downloading is easy, I can sort you out if you want with a great place.

No one's as good as Dylan. Costello has an interesting second generation Irish/London sensibility and wrote some good songs.

You've got a pm Plech

Guess you could also throw Springsteen into the Dylan/Costello debate as well.

Their first album Red Roses for Me is also excellent, not quite up there with Rum Sodomy but a bit more anarchic
And If I Should Fall - can't remember too much after that I think Shane was (even more) heavily on the piss.

Yeah. There's a couple of decent songs on Hell's Ditch... I've always had a soft spot for Summer in Siam... but it's basically crap.

Went to see them a few times, their gigs were the business even when Shane was incapable... sometimes because of it. I remember once, with The Popes who he played with for a bit after The Pogues dissolved, he started singing "The Body of an American" and a verse in the guitarist leaned over and mentioned to him that they were playing "Sally Maclennane".

For the roots of Dylan, try Bob Dylan, recorded circa 1962. It's fairly pure roots/blues a la Bukka White and Blind Lemon Jefferson etc, and is good even though not totally original like his mid-60's albums. It's just him with guitar.
