1. The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
2. Bringing It all Back Home
3. Time Out of Mind
4. Blood on the Tracks
5. Blonde on Blonde

Thoughts?

desire
new morning
john wesley harding
blonde on blonde
blood on the tracks

Ooh I forgot Desire. Good album, despite "Mozambique", which is a disgrace.

The Hurricane... what a great song. Only Dylan could get away with a lyric like this:

"You'd be doing society a favour
That sonofabitch is brave and getting braver
We want to put his ass in stir
We want to pin this triple mur-
-der, on him
He ain't no Gentleman Jim.

I mean, that's genuinely rubbish... but when Dylan does it, it's genius

Highway 61
Blood on the Tracks
Bringing It All Back Home
Freewheelin'
Blonde on Blonde

Dylans's someone who I have never sat down and listened too (yes, yes I know) I plan on putting that right this week. I'll let you know what I think.

Any recommendations on the best album to start with?

The freewheelin' Bob Dylan would be my recommendation. Great album

I always knew you had great taste (except in football matters)

Ditto! ;)

Ok, mate...lets see if we match on this...best song from each of these albums?

Like a Rolling Stone
Tangled Up In Blue
It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)
A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall
Visions of Johanna

'Masters of war' is my favourite Dylan track.

Highway '61 Revisited

Only cos that's what I started with

You could go chronological and start with his Woody Guthrie folk stuff

Will do.

Started listeneing to Blonde on Blonde last night, but switched it off after a few tracks as I wasn't in the mood for it, I'll try it again later.

Start at the beginning. Or with Freewheelin', close enough.

Yes he has written better songs (Like a Rolling Stone, The Times They Are A-Changin' etc.), but my favourite song isn't the best song. Make sense?

I can kind of understand this, as Brownsville Girl is one of the best songs he has ever written (albeit with Sam Shephard), yet comes from one of his worst albums.

Like a Rolling Stone or Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues
Tangled Up In Blue - Yep
It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) - Yep
A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall or Masters of War
Visions of Johanna - 4th Time Around

I wouldn't fight you over any of them though.

Blood on the tracks
Blonde on blonde
Time Out of Mind
the gig at Manchester in the 60's with the Band
Freewheelin'

I can't choose between the first four songs on Blood on the Tracks

Simple Twist of Fate, Tangled Up in Blue, You're a Big Girl Now, Idiot Wind... now that is storming out the fecking traps

Incredible album.

I have the acoustic demos as well done a couple of days before the album was recorded, with some of the lyrics a bit different.

Idiot wind is my personal favorite. One of the best songs he's made.

my top 10 Dylan songs

A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall
Black Diamond Bay
Desolation Row
Knockin' on Heaven's Door
Rainy Day Women
Spanish is the Loving Tongue
All I Really Want to Do
Just Like a Woman
Lay, Lady, Lay
Black Diamond Bay

The New York sessions version's great too

Idiot wind is my personal favorite. One of the best songs he's made.

As hate songs go it's got to be the greatest ever, maybe along with I Am The Resurrection

Stuck inside a Mobile
Visions of Johanna
Tambourine Man
Subterranean Homesick Blues

Though I have basically just said the first ten off the top of my head. And I've Freewheelin' and Street Legal, can't remember all the songs...

That's much too hard - like the 100 top films that I said I'd do in a moment of weakness then had to boil my brains to do it any kind of justice.

Off the top of my head...

Masters of War
Love Sick
A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall
Tangled Up in Blue
Idiot Wind
Like a Rolling Stone
Subterranean Homesick Blues
Positively 4th Street
Hurricane
Maggie's Farm

You should listen to Costello's I Want You. Blistering hate mixed with psychopathic jealousy...perfect for all you scorned lovers out there!
