Top 10 Film Directors

I've watched a lot of films but I really havent watched anywhere near enough to come up with a top ten (as such). From what i've seen the directors i'm most consistently impressed with are ; miyazaki, kubrick, hitchcock, kurosowa, spielberg, scorcese, coppolla, (some of ridley scott's), the coens and tarantino.

Scorsese and Kubrick are the two who I would never leave out, but I don't know many of the directors that're out there, so I'm not bothered with a list.

Are Kurosawa's films really all they're cracked up to be?

The Coens are excellent but not in the same league as the big boys

Saw Rocco and his Brothers recently (Visconti), makes you realise what a truly great film really is. Coen brothers compared to him are like Martin Amis compared to James Joyce.

David Lynch
Orson Welles
Walt Disney (Does animation count as direction?)
Akira Kurosawa
Brian De Palma (1960 - 1993)
Ridley Scott (forget Kingdom of Heaven)
*sigh* Spielberg...I suppose. Magical movies as a kid.
Paul Thomas Anderson
Joel and Ethan Coen
Wes Anderson

The list would probably change and I know it's left off loads of legends but oh well thats the nature of lists...

I have to disagree. I think the Coens' (apostraphe?:D) are the best film making duo currently working. They mix commercial success (i.e. cinematography and great acting) with superb multi level dialogue and black comedy. Fargo, Barton Fink, The Man Who Wasn't There, Big Lebowski, No Country For Old Men?

Oh anyone seen a film called The Nines by first time writer/director John August...woaaaaah WOAH what a film. Ignore the fact that the main protagonist was Van Wilder, this film is fecking stunning. Blows most modern stuff away.

Robert Altman is feckin great. Must buy that Nashville movie the next time I get a chance.

Spooney, stop watching shitty arse-house movies, you ponce.

What do you lot make of Bruce Robinson? Although i've never seen any of his films my best mate goes out with his daughter and they live about 10 mile away i've even swum in his pool. My dad reckons the killing fields is an excellent film and i no With nail and I has a big cult following.

Although not one of the all time greats a few Russ Meyer films are enjoyable to 'watch'. :D

Very unbalanced list.

You start off by stating that your not going to have 'old-timers' on your list and continue to include the Great Frank Capra and the Brilliant Hitchcock.

Anyhow, here's my top ten (no particular order):

1) John Ford
2) Francois Truffaut
3) Akira Kurosawa
4) Steven Spielsberg
5) Satyajit Ray
6) Fritz Lang
7) Sergio Leone
8) Jean Renior
8) Ridley Scott
9) Ingmar Bergman
10) Alfred Hitchcock

Point of irritation: in my book you can't compare the childish Mel Brooks with the sophisticated Woody Allen.

Not trying to compare any of them. I listed it by the quality films of most that I liked and then compiled it in no particular order, I did work at Blockbuster for years. So that makes me an expert right?

All amazing choices, but we could argue endlessly over each of our top tens.

Heck I did with myself as I couldn't be sure who I wanted to add, I couldn't even put one in order from 1-10 ffs. I would probably change it 100 times if I could.

Current Best in Direction(no movies pre-1995!)

Who is everyone's top 5 current directors, say at most 10 years experience, in the industry at the moment?

Here's mine. I might have missed others, but I thought they may be pre-'95. But here's the others!

1-Marc Forster
2-Christopher Nolan
3-Sofia Coppola
4-Wes Anderson
5-Danny Boyle

Maybe Guy Ritchie, I thought Soderbergh but he did Sex, Lies, and Videotapes didn't he?? His good stuff didn't start until after '95 as I wasn't a big fan of his formentioned film.

No order actually again. Marc Forster may be my top one though, too bad Sam Mendes hasn't made a decent film IMO since American Beauty as I thought he'd become a massive director. He keeps disappointing me though and that upsets me because I saw genius in that film. Darren Aronofsky is great as well, but "The Fountain" was seriously a film to glorify his wife(Rachel Weisz is amazingly hot! Love those brit actresses, her and Kate Beckinsale especially!!!).

I leave you with my favorite scene from a recent fav film, Stranger than Fiction! I love the teamwork in this between Forster and Ferrell.

Wasn't it Wreckless Eric that originally did this song??

I couldn't get into 8 1/2 by Fellini. Should I give it another go?

You're probably more of a 10 than an 8½..............
