Tom Cleverley

I've heard alot of great things about this lad and i've been impressed when i've seen him play in pre season. But lets not get carried away with ourselves, theres a massive gulf of quality and Tom needs to be able to have mental strength to survive at Old Trafford.

Just look at the abuse that Fletcher, Foster and now Gibson receives from the fans. Tom needs to be prepared for it. Exciting times for him though, I really hope he gets his chance this season. Our youth could prove to be a real dilemma for Ferguson this year, we don't want our best youngsters to get frustrated by lack of 1st team opportunities and move on ala Rossi/Pique.

Tom Cleverly is to sign a new contract at United tomorrow, and will be loaned out to a Prem side for next season. (according to James Ducker, the Times)

Glad the contract is finally sorted, and I am happy enough with a loan move to a prem side (as long as it isn't a relegation battler) but I would have liked to see him stay at United until January, playing for is in the CC and league (occassionally) and maybe a CL game or two depending on how the group goes.

i did think he would stay around till jan and we wouldve planned a loan deal if needed then

wouldnt take a spot in the 25 man squad either .
but regular football is better than a year with the reserves i guess .. i really hope we give him a chance at united .. i really like him

Hmmmm not sure Im too happy to hear the loan bit.

Personally Id prefer to keep him till xmas, let him go do the preseason tour where hes impressed before then let him go out on loan to the right club, Newcastle could be bottom of the league with Shearer as manager by December

I'm happy about the loan.

Even if he were ready I can't see many opportunities for him with Giggs, Scholes and Park around. There could be a big opening for him in 2011-12 though, and I get to watch him week in week out in the PL for a year hopefully.

Never really seen the lad play, bar the odd youtube clip, which seem impressive if not limited. Could someone please give me some details about his main attributes and weaknesses and who he is similar too in playing style?? Im gathering he is similar to a james milner/park type? Would like to see a talented & exciting youngster come through, havent been all that impressed with Gibson, we have dried up a bit recently on this front (young british talents breaking into the first team, bar fletcher).

Evans?

Alot is still up in the air with him. Personally I see him as an attacking midfielder in the long run. A few others here see him as a winger, imo hes not a winger in the coventional sense but is skillful and energetic enough to play that role at championship level, dont see it happening for him there as hes get older.

Hes far more dynamic than Gibson, he relies on his movement and the timing of his runs in terms of goal scoring whereas Gibson basically doesnt! Great work rate aswell (maybe the reason for the Park comparisons) as they dont have alot else in common.

If we don't bring in any new central midfielder then we shouldn't loan Cleverley up. Central midfield had proved weak last season and with Giggs/Scholes getting 1 year older then the boy may well end up proving useful to have around.

For Fergies ^ - the player whose style he reminds me most of is Iniesta. That's not to say he is, or will necessarily turn out to be, anything like as good as Iniesta at the moment.

Techinically he's good but it comes down to opportunities to play 1st team football.

I hope we don't loan him out and certainly not to that team. They'll probably keep him on the bench the divs. Besides his versatility could be invaluable . I don't think Giggs/Scholes will be playing 40+ games next season though that could depend on our transfer plans

Like poor Danny Simpson, who hated it so much he signed a long-term contract with them...

Who else was interested? Goodluck to him but not forgiven them for Rossi personally. That said they were dire at the time

My thoughts exactly. Obviously the club has a completely different structure now, but I would still hesitate to loan them more players.

Didn't hear much news about him linked with other clubs, but he was due to return to us in January but he wanted to extend the loan and make the loan permanent too.

Blackpool and Newcastle in battle to sign him on loan or so the rumour mill says

The big Cleverley myth!

He's been predominantly either at full back or a wide player in his career to date. He possibily has the ability to play effectively as an attacking midfielder, but is largely unproven there although I can see where Decotron is coming from.

Hes a far more accomplished footballer than Gibson. Balance and timing are spot on. Consideirng his rather serious injury not so long ago hes done remarkably well. Still hope we keep him till Jan before sending out on loan.

I feel the same, it seems odd that we are looking to loan out Cleverley and Welbeck when they have looked far more accomplished then Obertan, Macheda and Diouf.

based on what i saw of him last season, and in pre season so far, I would really like to seem Cleverly stay at United rather than go on loan. He looks an exciting prospect and a midfield player who could pop up with a few goals, which is something I think we need.

Would rather keep him than Gibson to be honest, has more to his game.

I'd be very disappointed if we sent him on loan this season. He carries a serious goal threat which i think would be invaluable coming off the bench (at the very least) this season. He seems to always make things happen as we've seen so far in each of the preseason games scoring one, and putting two assists on a plate for a teammate who should have scored. He and Welbeck have been about the only 2 youngsters who have shown any stomach for a fight and its them bizarrely that are being linked with loan moves away.

We dont really have another player like him. He's similar to Park i guess but i think potentially he has far more to his game in an attacking sense. I'd feel much more confident with Cleverley and Hernandez as bench options this year as i felt last season we didnt have the attacking options off the bench to make a difference, especially in the games towards the end of the season.

And yes, i think his future does lie in the middle, preferably with 5 in midfield with him playing behind the striker

scholess was a striker ofcourse so it happens. Though we all though becks would end up their, in the end if the opportunity don't exist. I think in Cleverlys case it might. It just might. We're strong on the wings and though cleverly would be good back up, centrally it's getting interesting

TBF Welbeck needs the loan. He is still not physically where he should be while Macheda and Diouf are. Cleverley is the strange one though, if we are adding no one to midfield from buying.

Welbeck looks physically ready and seems to have his confidence back.
In pre season. It was the same last year, he started off well, then started getting bullied. I'd love to see him have at least half a season in a mannng up league like the championship. For talent and confidence have never been his problem, and as SAF said..growing pains haven't helped.

He missed last preseason as he was playing for England u19s.

If he goes out on loan, it should be a PL club where he gets to play. That counts for all our talents who are about to break into the first team.

I think a 6 month PL loan for Cleverley wont be such a bad option.. However I do not want him to go to a club where he will not even get a look in.. If he is going somewhere in the PL he has to be playing regularly.. I think the likes of Blackpool (who seem to have the smallest squad of the PL), Wolves or even say Stoke..

P.S How many players can you loan out to a single PL team? 2 players? Because I think Even Welbeck should go there considering their main striker Clark is out for the season and some other striker called Almond is out for about 3-4 months with a dislocated shoulder..

Also what kind of football do Blackpool play?
