Tom Cleverley | 2012-14 Performances

Moyes said his top targets may not be available but any fecking target will be better than him at the moment

This, and most of his performances this season, makes me wonder how much worse Ando could do given the chances Cleverley has been given. Ando should play the remaining 45 minutes. Cleverley cannot control a simple pass from Carrick - they are perfect, and then they slip under his boots. Terrible!

Still, at least we know exactly what we can expect from him. No more illusions over what he could become, just an ordinary player. How long he'll remain here while playing at that level remains to be seen.

He can cross a ball, I remember he first broke through on the wing. Still an absolute nothing player.

That's a scandal of a decision.

That kind of tackle he does infuriates me, I was saying to a mate during the Swansea game at the weekend he does it about 5 or 6 times a game and constantly moans when it goes again him, never seems to learn. It's probably a harsh penalty but something like that was always going to happen the amount he does it.

As a player he's obviously got no confidence and probably isn't good enough for United, he may have been when he was younger but he really hasn't progressed at all.

Soft pen, that cannot be denied at all but the fact he never actually commits in a tackle in the first place leads him to being in stupid positions

Never a penalty, but Cleverley's woeful clearance only ten seconds before the penalty award was the reason we were under pressure in the first place.

Awful, awful performance, I'm sad to say.

He's average, I've said since the beginning he's average, and the only ones who said he wasn't average are those who were desperate for an academy player to come through the ranks now.

Relax lads, we have Danny and Adnan now, they'll do, you can finally point out how average Cleverley actually is.

Never a penalty. Good corner. Bad season. Still think he's got a lot more to him than he's shown this season and he'll be a valuable squad member.

I wouldn't criticise too harshly for the penalty or this bad performance alone. It happens. Sadly Cleverley looks less and less convincing though. If this continues he could easily be replaced as a squad option, nevermind actually starting regularly. Very ordinary player, unfortunately.

Still, in fairness to him, I think he knows he hasn't been playing well too.

I still think Cleverleys biggest problem is he doesn't suit a 2 man midfield. He needs to be one of two more advanced CMs with a dedicated holding player behind them. The sort of system that Arsenal or Barcelona play is the system he would thrive in.

As it is I'm not convinced he will make it here any more.

The problem is that Moyes sticks with playing him. There may be few options, but at this point I would rather give Ando a chance. If, however, that is never going to happen, I think he should try Kagawa instead of Cleverley. I'm thinking he can't do worse at this point.

Absolutely suicidal challenge for the pen. Just about sums up another poor performance where he kept losing the ball when pressured in midfield

Crazy challenge to commit. Clear pen or not when you lunge in like that you can have no complaints. Also this was one of the worst CM performances I can remember.

I recall he once mentioned his style was similar to Iniesta...my arse it is!!!

Gibson is better than him.

Might just be the worst I've seen him play. Shame. He's played a lot of football in fairness to him, but that was appalling.

Confidence plays a huge part in a player's performance. You only need to look at Jordan Henderson to see that. However, even when we were winning loads over the past few seasons, he rarely got mentioned in despatches. I just don't see him lasting.

Pogba gone, Morrison gone, Cleverley here. :(

I don't understand why when he closes a player in possession, instead of going straight to them he runs to the side and invites them to just run past him directly at the back four. He did it 3 or 4 times today including the penalty incident.

Hate the way he stands there like a coward when our CB's urge him to take the ball from them.
Hate the way he immediately passes the ball to the safest option available even when in 50 yards of space.
Hate the way he kicks the ball by over swinging his leg after kicking it.
Hate the way he runs around like a lost puppy.

Obviously never played the game have you. Who runs straight at a player when defending 1v1

That is in no way me trying to defend Cleverley, he was awful tonight but he is not a defensive player, it's too easy to pick up on any incident and belt him with it, especially when it resulted in a dubious penalty.

Sooooooo..... You like him, then?

Ok I didn't explain that too clearly - instead of confronting the player he seems to shepherd them past him and then he's wrong side of the player.

I agree though, it wasn't a penalty.
