Strange stance from Spurs. He's not going to stay and it's not like they will be playing him every week. They should have just given signs that they'd be willing to accept a reasonable price but they probably made it clear it's 75m or not happening. Instead he'll cost them millions in wages so he lost out, they lost out and we lost out.
Yeah I think we will too. I'd be disappointed if we didn't (assuming he doesn't sign a new contract by then)
Our squad has weaknesses, but if we can remain competitive until January and then sign a couple of good first XI players then, I'll feel confident.

Like many people in here I am also very disappointed that this didn´t work out. Hoped until the last minute that there would be a late agreement. He is one of the best defenders of the league and would have been a huge upgrade to your current options at CB. Maybe you could come back for him next summer, but one year is a long time in football so let´s see what happens.
I think Spurs also lost out in this saga because I cannot see him sign a new contract and he will most likely leave for 25m. Maybe Pochettino also remains reluctant to play him for like he already was last season so Toby will cost them a lot of wages without contributing a lot.

Not exactly. There's no clause in Martial's contract, his prime will remain the same and the club he'd be signing for possibly don't even give him a pay rise.
I'd say the way they're looking at it, if they have to accept a lower amount, they'd prefer him to go abroad rather than to strengthen a rival in the Prem.
From Poch's comments the other day, he knows he's not going to be getting much game time so I wouldn't be surprised to see him cut his losses and accept a pay cut to join someone in Spain or Italy over the next few weeks.
You're basing that on the chances of Alderweireld not signing a new contract now the window has shut. It's possible.

That's a fair point. It's a bit unfair really that Spurs can go for several seasons with about 3 centre backs who never get injured, while we have about 30 fellas constantly fighting each other for space on the physios bench.

Your guess is as good as mine, I have my views on Tony as a player I don’t really mind that he is ambitious. I don’t doubt that if he is played he will give 100%. He could still go in the next 3 weeks, probably the most logical solution.

Every time we significantly over pay, we set ourselves up for having to do so on the next signings.
In some ways, I think Woodie made an important statement this summer in saying that we will not be ripped off and we will walk away from deals if they aren’t reasonable.

I don't think we've had a single season where one of our first choice CBs hasn't been out for a few months.
Seems like Martial doesn't like Mourinho, Mourinho doesn't like Martial, and knowing Mourinho is reluctant to play him in case he proves him wrong. Sounds like a swap deal was on the cards, of which the merits/values can be debated until the cows come home, but it'll look a bit like a terrible decision if United end up a good CB away from the title and Martial is sat on the bench for it all.
The problem with that is it presumes clubs are desperate to sell to us. If we’re after a player all his club would have to do is ask for a ridiculously high fee and we’d just walk away. How many players could we potentially miss out on by trying to set this precedent?

You do know that the negotiations usually involve an intermediary, right? So even if this story is true, that doesn't mean you haven't been trying to buy him all summer.

Anyway different situation to Toby. Martial is a young player with a healthy amount of time left on his contract. (No clauses either).
Spurs have lost themselves about £30m quid through stubbonness. If he decides to sit out his contract it will be a nightmare.
If he plays 0 games this season and is barred from the first team squad, who's going to want to buy him at 30? it's not in his interest to kick up a fuss now. Look at what Grealish has just posted - yes, he's disappointed not to have moved but he's a professional and cannot sulk just cos he didn't get what he wanted.
It's lose lose for Spurs though. They'll get no extra cash.

That comment must be out of context as it literally makes no sense.
If we bought toby, we'd likely sell the "5th ranked" CB. The source is arguing that they valued Toby so little that they would be selling the fifth best CB (likely rojo) for a player they ranked at the same quality level.
Hence....Woodward needs to go.

Such a bullshit logic to base an article on and folks just eat it up. Woodward is clearly trying to change our bad habits regarding transfers. Seems stupid not to invest now, but in the long run it sends a message so we won't always be the suckers. Clubs like Barca shouldn't even entertain the thought of bidding for Pogba without giving up a top player or ridiculous money. Midlevel clubs are after our players, but can't afford the wages we have them on. It becomes a model where you buy overpriced players and offer them ridiculous wages, then have to sell them on the cheap if they don't work out. To change these things we have to be less desperate in the marked, which is what we're trying to do. Ironically we should be desperate for a leftback and a right winger. Howoever, maybe what happened this window will make later negotiations easier?
It certainly isn't a bad thing for Spurs to keep hold of Alderweireld but if they aren't going to play him, he would suit us for 25m in January.
