Toby Alderweireld

having Fonte next to him, two holding midfielders in front of him and overall quite defensive tactics made him look pretty good. Not saying he's any bad, he's decent player but he's not the player we should go for, he wouldn't be upgrade on Smalling, Jones or Rojo...

He'd be an obvious upgrade on Rojo and Jones. Only reason I wouldn't have him is because we should be signing Stones instead. Southampton don't play defensive football either.

Toby plays RB for the Belgian NT. if nothing else he can provide solid RB play. I think he's capable of playing for a top 4 PL club.

Sounds pretty versatile to me. Also played DM a few games for Southampton and he impressed there as well. He can play long passes for sure.

Just as versatile as Phil Jones.
I wouldn't go that far.

Would not be an improvement on any of our 4 CBs. Good on the ball but, pretty mediocre defensively especially in the air.

Yeah Terry is getting old and Cahill was pretty wank for the most part this season. Meanwhile Alderweireld has been solid for Southampton. He might have to sit on the bench for a season but he'll get his chance. I expect to see two new first choice center backs at Chelsea within two seasons time.

Zouma is nailed on for the next key CB spot.

Wouldn't go that far with Cahill. True he had a poor patch there when he was dropped for Zouma, but he then returned to his solid self.

As for Alderweireld, the move makes sense but I'd be sad to see Luis go. Could've been a weapon for us if José actually used him next season. Alderweireld is more versatile though and can play all along the back 4 if necessary.

I would take him at Chelsea.. If needed.. I would play him rb and move Ivanovic to cb too incase Terry is not fit.... Toby could be a useful dead member for years....

Of course not. Its kind of pathetic how they're being raided repeatedly though. I know its the nature of the game but in their case it seems extreme and unbalanced

Apologies if I'm repeating myself but I'm not 100% sure you realised what I meant or not  If you did then sorry for sounding condescending.

He was on loan at Southampton. Athletico Madrid own him so surely it's not Southampton being raided here?

Ah I see! Carry on

Yeah.... If he likes to sit on the bench it´s a great move for him.

Why would he sit on the bench? Cahill isn't good enough for Chelsea, Mourinho dropping him indicates that he might look to replace.

Not good enough.

Lovren the second possibly.

In the league? Wasn't even the best center back at Southampton.

Good player no doubt. But in all honesty I would prefer a defender a level or two above him

Don't rate him that high, still more to prove. For me right now only a example of a good Southampton defence who made every individual look better than he is. I mean every one of their back 4 had a good season, next year will be most likely much tougher. Outside of Southampton he didn't look good at all, was a liability at Atletico.

I still think he would have been a good signing for us (OP)

Yeah, he's a very good player. As I've said in another thread, quite possibly the best in the league this season seeing as Smalling and Koscielny have both suffered dips in form at times.

I rate him, his points tally is right up the top of the list of defenders in FF to prove that. I was disappointed not to see us in for him in the summer along with Tottenham, apart form Gomez we should have targeted him to improve our defence.

he's been class for a couple of seasons now, and doesnt seem to have the injury history of the likes of Vertonghen.

I really rate him, and I think he's been great for Southampton.

However, I think a large part of that is down to the way they play. Wanyama is an absolute monster playing as a #6 for them, and they have a defensive box to box partner in him in Schneiderlein. He gets a lot of protection, so I'd be wary. Depends on how the scouts rate him.

Going off this season he's better than any of our centre back options.

Looks like I was right, except swap Wanyama and Schneiderlein for Dier and Dembele.

He's better than any of our defenders still.

Was quite average at the cameos he had at Atletico. Haven't watched him this season though.

Didnt he play mostly righback? It's like playing Jones there, defensively solid, good cross on him but nothing else pretty much

Can't recall that, perhaps you're right.
