Toaster Toes Timo Werner | Tottenham Player

That's what I thought. Chelsea not wanting to offer Cavani £360k a week at that time seems perfectly reasonable.
Definitely, in fact any club willing to pay him £360k a weekm deserves their whole board carted off to the loony bin. It looks a good move in hindsight but in reality he was a big gamble, even at £200k a week. That's why he had so few suitors.

Ok, you didn't make it up. The tabloids did. Apologies.

It's obviously bollocks to say his age was THE issue, given we signed someone older. You didn't mention wages, only age in the post I replied to.

I'm sure his wages were a concern at £360,000 per week. Is he on that at Man United? Surely not.

I've no idea, I don't really care. It's not my money.

It may well be bollocks but this all started when I said I was thinking about it, to which all the Chelsea gimps got all uppety

He was free, it wasnt that much of a gamble. Especially when its just a year with an option of another one

He did command a big agent fee though. From the perspective of someone like Chelsea who already signed Werner in the summer, who most believed would end up playing striker, then I think it would've been an unnecessary and expensive gamble, they already had a lot of attackers to bed in. I do think clubs must have seen him as a gamble because us and Benfica were the only teams in for him.

Ahh, I thought it looked like Polish for "misses terribly".

From my ever so brief liaison with a Polish girl years ago, I learnt very quickly that their words look nothing like ours.

I learned to say this correctly recently to impress someone: W Szczebrzeszynie chrząszcz brzmi w trzcinie.

The sounds are not that difficult but you really have to wrap your head around the consonant clusters in writing.

He does a lot of good things on the pitch generally speaking, but my god his confidence in front of goal is literally at rock bottom.

I might have a shocking username but I’ve called this one bang on the head. He’s bang average and I had Chelsea fans coming from all angles in the summer to tell me how brilliant he is. You can’t polish crap technical skills.

Even an average player would have scored that.
A shit player would have scored that.
You would have scored that.
I would have scored that.
Even Troy Deeney might have scored that!

His scoring record spoke volumes. People said he isn't great in tight spaces against low blocks, and that has so far proven to be pretty accurate, but a lot of the sitters he's missed have been in wide open space, which is what people said was the reason he scored so many goals in the German league.

I just don’t think he has ever looked like a great player. The concern for me is what this means for defending in the bundesliga, it certainly raises questions about Sanchos productivity and even Haaland to some lessor degree.

Yeah as long as Chelsea and their fans keep faith in him, everyone should be happy :D

He always looked a like a finisher. I thought we were at least getting a killer in front of goal, regardless of his deficiencies elsewhere in his game.

I'm sure there are examples of players who struggled in the Bundesliga but thrived here.

Morata had better output than Timo (11 goals vs 5) but Chelsea fans had their pitchforks out. Werner wouldn't last long if he keeps serving shite performances.

He is still a reasonably effective player for us. He has found other ways to contribute, but ideally he needs to find his scoring boots at some point, otherwise Chelsea will have no problems shipping him back to Germany.

This is confirmation bias at its finest.

Morata has always been a far better play truth be told. He had a poor mentality so I get why he didn’t work out at Chelsea but on paper Morata has always had the attributes to be a top player and that why he’s played for top teams. I think Werner has always looked technically lacking and a speed merchant.,

How because I made a judgement based on what I saw in the past and he hasn’t done anything at all to prove me wrong. Of course you’d Wade in as the self proclaimed defender of the Bundesliga. It’s the most tiresome routine on this forum.

I mean that's just ridiculous. Morata has never had a season half as good as Werner's last year.

I agree that Morata has become underrated now (and he's having a very good season for Juve), but let's not be OTT here.

Nah Morata is a good player who has had many many top performances at the highest level. Werner played well in a system built around him in the bundesliga and looked technically average all the while. He’s now playing as expected at Chelsea in a harder league and for a bigger club. Not good enough for the top level. I understand why Chelsea fans wouldn’t like or rate Morata though so you are entitled to that opinion.

If your criteria for "far better player" is "had one or two games at a very high level" as opposed to looking at tangible output, then fair enough?

Which though? He's scored more than 10 goals in a league season only thrice in his career, most is 15, and he's already 28. I was astonished when Chelsea paid so much for him given that he wasn't even great for Juventus when he played as a starter.

Just a matter of confidence that I can relate to from my junior tennis years. People speaking "ah he's shite, Morata is better, he is just a speed merchant" they know jack shite of what goes through anyone's head when they hit a rough patch.

Back in my junior days I beat two guys that are CURRENTLY in top 30 ATP rankings and I beat them twice in the span of two months, four matches against them I did not lose a set, then I had some personal issues, my confidence got shot, I lost some matches I was not supposed to, I was on a losing streak and half an year later I played against these two guys again and they beat the shit out of me this time (60 61 both matches iirc) and they even asked me what the hell it happening to me.

Six months earlier I'd have beaten them any hour of the day and the night, six months later I could not even win two points in a row to save my life - confidence plays a big part in any sport and mine was shot at that moment.

I think Werner is in a similar spot now, English media is all over him, he does not have the same input as he used to and lately that Bild article and the fact that Low does not trust him anymore might have shot his confidence even harder.

Never been the biggest fan of stats. I’d rather trust what I see. Been wrong before as we can all see but I just think Morata is a better player from what I’ve seen of both.

He’s played for top teams pretty much his whole career. I’d be surprised if Werner plays for another top team after this Chelsea stint. Utd should have 100% signed Morata instead of Lukaku that summer I still believe he’s the better player.

Jesus Christ that's shocking.

What's going on with this guy? All banter aside I'm genuinely amazed at how poor his finishing has been for such a sustained period now.

I watched him against Liverpool at Anfield and it felt like a turn the corner performance of sorts yet he's not kicked on at all. It's pretty worrying really and seems to be beyond a bad patch of form now.

Eric Maxim Choupo Moting has played for PSG and Bayern Munich, doesn't mean anything in terms of his actual ability. It also tells a story that no team has been willing to keep Morata for more than a couple of seasons, it's not surprising given his poor goals + assists numbers.

He's nowhere near Lukaku for that matter, Lukaku's shown that in the last couple of seasons.

It's an utter lack of confidence in his finishing. It looks like he first thinks he'll go with his right foot but then at the last moment decides with to go with his left.

For all the sh*te he has produced this season, he still has 10 goals and 10 assists in all comps this season averaging a goal/assist every 140 minutes. That's not a poor record by any means and shows that despite his poor finishing he's still doing more other than that, which I guess is why Chelsea fans still favour him.

Would be interesting to see whether he starts against West Brom. Ideal game to get back into some goalscoring.

But he's always been missing easy chances - literally open goal misses even when he was in top form.

The more I see of Werner, the more I’m sure Abramovich will go all out for Haaland

What's interesting is that coming into the year people had noted that he is quite a streaky goalscorer - historically he's scored goals in bunches with droughts in between, though he'd never been through a sustained period of poor finishing to this extent.

He's also won us 7 penalties this year.

Morata in his banter season
31 games in EPL - 11 Goals - 6 Assists
Total 48 games - 15 Goals - 6 Assists

Werner so far
28 games in EPL - 5 Goals - 8 Assists
Total 39 Games - 10 Goals - 10 Assists
