It would be a fairly underwhelming deal when taken in isolation. It might make a lot more sense when we see who else we buy and who else goes though. If we end up needing cover for LB and have splurged big money on payers in other positions then Vermaelen might prove to be a cost efficient way of bolstering the team.

I can't see him solving our issues at CB though. We need a top quality player there and Vermaelen simply isn't that.
 
If I remember correctly he played enough games last season that he had the choice of a year long contract extension. Maybe he wanted to ensure he had a big pay cheque coming in every week before he flew out of to Brazil. Circumstances might have changed now as there'll be pressure on Van Gaal to play Shaw after we spent so much on him.

If Evra wants to play football elsewhere rather than collect a nice wage here sitting on the bench then I respect that decision.
 
If we cheap out on this position and buy.him because we have signed Di Maria and Vidal, I won't mind.
 
Why we're supposed to be thrilled at the prospect of playing him out of position I'm not quite sure. I don't want him covering left back, I want an actual full back playing at full back, not a poor centre back.

The club better have something up their sleeve to sort the FB positions, it was deeply irritating we allowed a manager on his way out to sell Fabio at no gain, and now we're seeing the back of Buttner and Evra with none incoming. I can imagine Valencia, Smalling, Jones and Vermaelen will have their work cut out next season trying to look good in a position they're not supposed to be playing.
 
We need a centerhalf, period. If our centerhalf is also backup at left back, it might mean we won't be able to use him where we need him for certain games. And I'm not even talking about his injury record, which might prevent him doing either for long periods!
 
The way Arsenal fans talk of him you would think he played in the matches they got battered in..

Because we have Shaw at LB and we need a cover.
 
I Rly hope we sign Vermaelen. Smalling has been at United for 4seasons, played 75games, Jones been here 3seasons, played 76games. I think it's time we call it quits on Smalling, and see if we cant recoup some of that £12m we spend on him at Fulham. I dont think he'll ever live up to such a high fee so soon after waiting tables.

Unbelievable. £70m contract and the best they are getting is Herrera (Whorera?), Shaw (yes Southampton FC, think about that) and fecking Vermaelen - not even third choice centre back at the team that finished fourth. Lolz and green smilies.

Rio an Vidic gone and we're after this lump. I think I'd rather stick mop head in at centre back than waste money on him.

Don't think we can afford to let go of Smalling or Jones as we won't have many Home Grown players left
 
Swapping CB for CB/LB doesn't make much sense really. If need be, then Evans can play at LB, so we're not really gaining any cover by giving away a young and still very promising defender in Smalling, for a utility player who is often injured.

And Smalling is better than Vermaelen anyway.
 
Smalling is the also the best CB we have. He isn't going anywhere.
